"I probably shouldn't have left him alone," N'vanik said as he settled
a hand on Cyradis's waist. "But he needs a little freedom."
"Yes he does," she agreed looking up at him. "I think it's a good test
of his ability to follow orders as well," she smiled. "He's coming
along slowly but I think he'll get there." It was better than what
she'd thought a few weeks ago.
"He might strangle me for that song." N'vanik chuckled.
"Maybe but I think it's good. The tune is great. Vestian really pulled
through for you." She smiled and her own arm stole around his waist.
"It was a a very good idea even it he's upset about it now."
"Worth every mark." He moved them to the slow song. Shards, he missed
having the best harpers at the Weyr. "Would it be okay if I took
J'ackt out on a restday? He needs a real break."
"As long as he's with you I don't think Panitath will throw a fit. She
trusts you and Loseth. So do I for that matter," she smiled up at him
and followed his lead. He was a good solid Weyrleader and she had to
admit that Dolphin Cove needed him to be in the Weyrleader role. There
had been too much upset there and now was a time for some stability.
Her lips twisted into a teasing smile. "So do you think I'm going to
stick around?"
"I hope you do." They made a good team and her support for J'ackt made
him genuinely like Cyradis. "You look lovely, by the way." The emerald
green dress complimented her and her hair had been pulled up in an
elaborate style.
"Thank you," she said with a genuine smile and sparkle of pleasure.
They'd come a long way in their relationship after such a rough start.
She only hoped J'ackt could follow in N'vanik's footsteps to become
the best he could be with Zith's help. "And you, are quite handsome,"
her dark eyes told the truth of it as she gazed up into his.
"Are you buttering me up?" he asked in a light tone.
"Do I need to," she asked in the same light tone.
"Depends on what you might be asking." Was she being playful or was
this something else?
"Oh I'm not asking anything," she smiled. "But our partnership is more
than it has been in the past. So let's just say I'm open to a closer
relationship. Unless that word scare's you." She grinned up at him.
N'vanik chuckled. "Are you challenging me now? You're playing with
fire, Weyrwoman." His hand tightened around her waist. Was she
actually proposing a tumble in the furs?
"No actually." she shook her head. "It's more than that. We're good
for the Weyr as a team N'vanik." She knew Loseth had won twice but the
last one had been a fluke. "Panitath's flight is coming up and she's
never picked the same bronze twice in a row unless I was involved with
the rider." She shrugged. "I want you to keep your job when she goes
up again."
He stilled, torn between being insulted and flattered. "You want to
bed me to increase my chances?"
Her voice pealed out in laughter enough to turn some heads. "You
didn't seem to object to it the last time we flew," she said softly.
She let go of his hand and appeared to look around the room. "But if
you'd rather not, I'm sure I could find D'hol around here somewhere,
or R'enh."
N'vanik yanked her close, pressing their bodies together. "Now I'm
pissed." And also turned on.
"Oooh," she said when he pulled her to him. Her smile didn't falter in
the face of his anger. Perhaps he'd changed his mind after all. Of
course they were still in the middle of the Harper Ball so what she
might have done at the Weyr was quite different than what she could do
here on the dance floor.
"I think we should take this back to the room don't you?"
He reached up to trace along her jaw, under the mask. "This is more
than just politics, right?" N'vanik's stomach quivered with
vulnerability. "I don't have romantic notions. Don't want to. But can
we do this as friends?"
"Yes," she answered simply to his first question. "No romance," she
said softly leaning into him. "We both have someone to love. But we
can be good friends, I think."
Tension eased out of him, a faint smile curving his lips. "Then lets
go to our room."
She glanced at the couples nearby noting the looks at the way N'vanik
had handled her a moment before. "Perhaps we should finish the dance
first," she said with a twinkle. She didn't bother to mention leaving
J'ackt to his own devices for the rest of the evening. A little
freedom might help him as well.
