**Let Cyradis know that I'll be a bit late to the meeting,** Kapera
told Riyanth.
Riyanth dutifully reached out to Panitath to pass the message along.
When Kapera did arrive it was almost a quarter candlemark from the
time she had supposed to have arrived. She knocked on the door and
breezed in. "My duty to you and Panitath. Sorry I'm late," she
apologized.
"Not at all," Cyradis said and stood to put her son down on a blanket
with his toys. Kendran was a happy child and sometimes she had him in
her office for a few hours in the afternoon. At almost six months he
was quite a bit of fun and she didn't want to miss it.
"Oh, how's he doing?" the other goldrider asked curiously upon
spotting the child.
"Getting bigger as they all do," she said with a smile at her son. "I
really hadn't thought I'd have another so this was a surprise and a
welcome one."
"He's pretty cute, so I'm glad you're happy." Kapera was one of those
people awkward around children, but she still grinned at the child
before settling into a chair.
"I was held up by one of the weyrlings who had some questions," she
added. "This clutch is due for Blooding soon."
"Oh," she asked. It wasn't that uncommon for people to find ways to
talk to goldriders and most often it was with questions. "What kind of
questions?"
"What flying Fall is really like in our wing, and how often we
actually have to catch falling pairs. She seems scared." It made sense
for weyrlings to be afraid of their Blooding.
"A bit of fear is a good thing," she said. "Cocky or overly fearful
will get them hurt. How did you gauge her fear?"
"Overly fearful. I'm a little surprised she Impressed," Kapera said
after a moment of thought.
"Well then, we should probably talk with the Weyrlingmasters to give
them an account of your impressions. They'll have to take special time
with her. What did Riyanth think of her lifemate? Is she steady?"
}:Talureth is fine,:{ Riyanth said.
"She thought that the green was fine. And L'pin has had good things to
say about most of the members of this clutch. Panitath and Loseth must
be proud of them."
"Do we know what is causing all this fear? It doesn't seem to me a
stable green would select a rider who was unable to fight thread."
Cyradis brows came together in a slight frown.
"It could be the immediacy of the Blooding. It's the next Fall,"
Kapera said. "Weyrling training is so exhausting that she probably was
absorbing lessons without realizing how serious it would be. Do you
think we should ask the staff to keep her out of the first one?"
"If you truly think she's a danger to herself or her dragon. She
should see a mindhealer at least. How would you handle it?" Cyradis
was aware of Kapera's past and her own struggles with leadership.
Perhaps this was a time for her to make the call.
Kapera considered her impression of Satai's behavior. The girl had
been curious about what Fall was actually like, and seemed really
worried about pain for herself and her dragon. Did she need to be
grounded? That was a powerful blow against her confidence. And Kapera
wasn't the Weyrlingmaster, to make this call for the weyrling.
"I'd have L'pin talk to her and see if she needs the mindhealer. He's
spent the most time with this class, so he'd know if this was
characteristic of her or if she was having an off day," she finally
answered.
"If L'pin thinks she's fine, then let her do stone delivery to the low
wings. When we starts integrating them, make sure she isn't picked for
a high-pressure wing. If he thinks she isn't fine, there's no shame in
being an assistant."
"Good call," Cyradis smiled. "Why don't you talk to L'pin and have him
give you his recommendation."
"I'll speak with him tonight," the 'second promised. "Is there any
important Wing business we haven't gone over?"
"I think that's good," Cyradis smiled. Kendran was becoming restless
and began to fuss. So, Cyradis bent to pick him up and carry him back
to her desk. "Second Weyrling we've had to send to the mind healer.
I'm thinking we may need to take a look at our candidate selection
criteria."
"Make sure they're comfortable with what they're being asked to do
before we let them on the Sands?" Kapera pondered the issue.
"Yes," she nodded. "I think the time for being fearful of losing a
weyrling at Hatching can be laid aside in our efforts to make sure our
candidates are all they should be."
