Tired and irritable, J'ackt was looking forward to some much needed
quiet. Being forced to see a mind healer was almost more than he could
bear. The man was the ultimate in annoyance and J'ackt had difficulty
not breaking things in the office.
So it was with surprise that he came into his weyr and found Saidrene
there, piles of rugs and other decorations in the center of his rooms.
He frowned as paused at the door, starting at what else she had
brought in.
"Well? How was it?" Saidrene asked without turning to look at J'ackt.
Currently the greenrider was standing, one finger tapping her chin as
she looked about to try and determination the best location for the
"homey things" she'd gotten to go in the bronzerider's weyr.
He snorted as he stepped around the rugs, then nudged them with his
foot. He glanced at the coverlets on the couch and the table cloth.
There were dishes too and a tapestry? What did he need a tapestry for?
It wasn't as though he spent time looking at the walls. "How do you
think? "
A grin tugged at her lips. "That well, huh?" Deciding on the long wall
opposite his bed for the tapestry, Saidrene grabbed the colorful piece
of artwork, and then drug a chair over to stand in so that she could
hang it.
"It's stupid." He complained. "I don't fecking need to talk to a
mindhealer about how I feel. What do they care?" J'ackt grumbled as he
watched, then sighed as he held the chair steady. "What's the tapestry
for?"
Saidrene answered as she stretched on her tiptoes to hang the tapestry
using the hooks that had been left behind by the previous inhabitant,
"I suppose they must care, in some capacity, otherwise it would be
quite a tedious job to sit and listen to people complain about their
problems, or rant and rave and grumble about having to come to the
meetings." She cast a teasing wink over her shoulder at J'ackt.
"And the tapestry adds some color, keeps your weyr from looking too
much like a cave." Saidrene answered as she hopped down from the
chair, her hand planted on J'ackt's shoulder as she used it to steady
her descent.
He kept his arm out, just in case she stumbled. "He doesn't know me.
He just wants to pick my brain is all." He tapped his head, then eyed
the tapestry. "What's wrong with caves? They're not so bad." Tilting
his head at the pictures, he paused and then squinted his eyes at some
detail in the tapestry. He blinked, then barked out a sudden laugh.
"Sweet Faranth, Saidrene, did you really look at this before you
grabbed it?" He pointed to the area. "These positions are interesting
but not really realistic."
A wicked gleam came into Saidrene's eyes, "It seemed appropriate for
you." Sticking her tongue out at him playfully, the brunette turned
and grabbed up some of the rugs to place around the weyr. **One beside
of the bed, of course, the stone floor is always freezing in the
morning.** She thought as she plopped one down.
"I've got something you can use that tongue on." He muttered, bending
to straighten the rug. "Did you do this for your weyr too?"
"Of course." Saidrene chirped. "It's nice to have something relaxing
to come home to, a place that is yours, that smells like you and looks
like you...." She trailed off, realizing that might sound weird to
someone who'd never had a proper home before.
He stopped what he was doing and slowly glanced around. "I guess
that's true." His brow furrowed. "Always just thought of this place as
somewhere to sleep, to be honest." Rising to stand, J'ackt scrubbed a
hand through his hair. The thought of it being a 'home' had never
really occurred to him.
"Or a place to sleep with others?" She shot back, grinning as she
dropped a rug in front of the entrance to Zith's weyrcouch.
He didn't deny it. Instead, a crooked smile lifted his lips and he
shrugged. It was true that he rarely slept alone. Saidrene was the
only one to rib him about it, even though she was one that sometimes
was here in the morning. He liked where their friendship was now. It
was a comfortable thing, and he trusted her enough to open up more
than anyone else he could think of. In truth, he liked it better than
attempting to be a couple with her; _that_ was something he simply
wasn't suited for. "You don't complain."
Saidrene laughed, "No, I don't." She grabbed up a couple of books that
she'd snatched to put on one of his shelves. "How's your reading
coming, by the way?" If nothing else the books just added a homey feel
to the space, whether they were ever used or not wasn't important.
"I do it when I have to." He shrugged again. "Hurts my head to read
most times." He waved his hand near his eye. "The words all jumble
up." He sounded resigned to it, as though he knew it would always be a
hard task for him. His reading skills weren't great; he was slow at
it, but he could do it. He just didn't like reading in front of other
people because he stumbled so much over the words and many times, he
had to try to say them out loud. He eyed the books. "That's a waste,
Saidrene. You like reading more than I do. Why don't you keep them?"
The brunette smiled as she situated the books beside of a book end- a
carved dragon- and then turned to J'ackt, "I've already read them.
They're two stories you might enjoy if you ever find yourself alone in
here and bored." Saidrene winked.
J'ackt arched his brow and moved over to wrap an arm around her waist
from behind. "I've got better ideas than just reading." He kissed her
cheek, then paused. "Except..." He rubbed his brow. "Shards, this girl
from the kitchens. She won't leave me the blazes alone." He rested his
head on her shoulder, both arms light around her waist as he mused.
"She watches me all the shaffing time. Bathing Zith, swimming, even
eating. And she finds me in the halls sometimes."
Saidrene snuggled back into J'ackt's familiar form, but frowned as he
described his stalker. "Do you want me to say something to her? You
can't get in trouble, but my record is squeaky clean."
He gave a soft snort. "No. I can handle it. Besides, all I need is
another rumor going around about me and women." He proceeded to tell
her about the problems with Alina. "Shards, it's like I can't do
anything right lately."
"You and Alina are as different as a bird and a fish, or night and
day. She is ultra conservative and you are ultra..." she ran her eyes
up and down his visage, "not." Saidrene laughed a little as she hook
her head.
"I suspect Alina likes you and feels confused by that, after all, you
are everything she was taught to dislike growing up."
"No, I'm pretty sure she hates my guts right about now." He glanced at
all she had done and changed the subject. "It looks different,
Saidrene."
She turned around and surveyed her work with a meticulous eye. "Good
different, or bad different?"
"It's good, I think." He admitted. "It looks more...normal, I guess.
Not as bare." His hand lightly and mindlessly caressed her abdomen,
used to the feel of her under her hands. "Thanks."
Saidrene turned her head just a bit and kissed the underside of
J'ackt's jawline, "You're welcome."
He glanced down at her and then at the tapestry before bending to
whisper in her ear. "Why don't we try out some of those positions?"
"I was hoping you would say that. I've already picked out my
favorites." She said with a giggle as she turned and launched herself
at him, wrapping her arms around his neck as they fell in a tangle
onto the bed.
