N'vanik decided they'd said hello to enough people to be polite.
"Would you like to dance, Weyrwoman?" he asked with a little smile.
"I would," the tiny Weyrwoman smiled up at him and held out her hand
to be led to the dance floor. She always enjoyed functions like
hatchings. More so, when she wasn't the focus and could leave when she
got tired. Dragonsfall's hospitality never failed and she was still
quite proud of the way Saibra was making it her own. Of course this
hatching was about her 'second and from what she'd heard, Teseada was
really coming along as she matured.
She turned as they got to the dancefloor and held up her arms.
He stepped into her embrace. Dancing with her was a bit awkward due to
the height difference, but N'vanik had quite a lot of practice dancing
with short women. And thinking of that... "So Rhosyn brought a
bluerider."
Cyradis brows twitched, "Really?" The history of N'vanik with the
Riverbluff Weyrwoman was fairly well know in some circles. Her
eccentricity very well known. "That seems an odd choice."
"Wonder if she's trying to stir up gossip." He did sort of... miss the
old Rhosyn, the bold woman who went looking for a bit of trouble.
Cyradis chuckled. "I wouldn't put it past her," she tilted her head up
at him. "Think she's trying to make you jealous? Or maybe just get
your attention?"
"That would almost be ironic, since I left her because she pushed me
away." N'vanik sighed. He wasn't angry, just sad things had ended the
way they did. "Maybe it's a new mother thing? Wants to show everyone
she's still young and carefree?"
"Who knows," Cyradis shrugged. "But enough about her. That was a nice
clutch and wasn't it the second for Haloth?"
"He's the one that caught Onnyth last time, I think. He's a bit young
yet, but I wonder if G'nir might be getting nervous." He sent Cyradis
into a slow spin.
"We were all young once," she said breathlessly as she came back to
him. "G'nir is always watching his back." She'd heard more than one
story. "Oh did you see that?" She nodded toward one of the exits.
"Saibra and R'enh," she chuckled. The bronzerider was quite a favorite
at the Weyr and while she understood the attraction she wasn't one of
his conquests, if you could cal it that.
"If R'enh transfers to Dragonsfall, then G'nir will really have
something to worry about." He smiled. "Not that I'd let him go."
"Something tells me you'd mind losing R'enh more than you enjoy the
thought of G'nir being uncomfortable." She chuckled. Bronzriders got
so jealous of each other it was amusing at times. Though N'vanik
seemed to have a real friend in his wingsecond.
"Very true." His smile brightened before fading away. "Do you miss
having Saibra around?"
"I do," Cyradis nodd. "But when I saw how good she was, I knew she
wouldn't be ours for long. Kapera is really coming along. All she
really needs is a bit more confidence."
"I knew her before. Not well, but still... she seems different.
Quieter." N'vanik guided them past a couple that was already far into
their cups, laughing and not watching out for other dancers. "Leaving
Dragonsfall the way she did couldn't have been easy."
"She almost lost Riyanth," Cyradis shook her head. "That would change anyone."
Now they'd gone down a depressing road. N'vanik glanced around,
looking for a distraction. "Well, looks like Rhosyn's bluerider is
enjoying himself." The rider was dancing with another man.
After working with him so long she saw the minute changes in his face
and carriage so the change in subject didn't really come as a
surprise,. She had come to enjoy N'vanik's company despite their rocky
start. "Oh my," she grinned as she saw what was going on. "However can
she bear not being the center of his attention?"
He laughed. "This might be the last time _he_ gets invited to escort
her. Or maybe she found someone else to bask in her glow." Time had
faded his bitterness and he hoped it was a good sign that Rhosyn was
trying to stir up gossip.
"I wouldn't worry," Cyradis smiled. "She seems to be back in form. I
think you are too," she said as the dance ended. "Happy hunting," she
grinned as a Lord Holder claimed her for the next dance. She winked at
N'vanik. He was tall, good looking and she was sure he'd find a
willing partner for the evening if he wanted one.
Tavia had been watching from the side of the dance floor and smiled at
the familiar figured as their dance ended. She'd missed Dolphin Cove
more than she wanted to admit. "Hello stranger," she grinned as she
walked up to N'vanik.
"Tavia. Good to see you." He returned the smile. "How have you been?"
"N'vanik, It's very good to see familiar faces from Dolphin Cove here
tonight," she said a little wistfully.
"You're welcome back any time, you know." He meant it as either for a
visit or to move back. Now that her reason for transferring was gone,
maybe she'd want to return.
"Thank you," she smiled in genuine feeling. "I've thought about it.
It's good to know you wouldn't hold it against me for coming here."
She'd kind of thought he might not want her back but she was very
happy to know her fears were unfounded.
"Sometimes we go chasing something and ... it doesn't turn out the way
we expected." He shrugged. Though in his case he was happy with where
he'd ended up.
"You're right," she nodded. "Who knew this would happen." She shook
her head. "I certainly didn't see it coming." she brushed the thoughts
of U'kaiah away and resolved to look forward.
"How's the little one?" That should be a happier topic.
"He's good," she said with a sunny smile. "Getting so big so fast.
How's your new little one?" She'd heard of course, as they all had,
about Rhosyn and the child she'd had with N'vanik.
"Also growing fast. I suspect she'll be trouble when she gets older,
considering her parents." Although maybe her foster mother would
mellow her out. Briata seemed to be full of calm confidence.
Tavia couldn't help laughing at that. Both N'vnaik and Rhosyn had
quite distinct reputations. "Yes well, at least she'll have some level
headed foster parents to help her though the difficult times." She
looked over her shoulder to where she saw N'klar holding up a bottle
and a pair of glasses. "Alright," she smiled up at N'vanik. "Good to
see you. Fly safe,"
