Description: The junior weyrlings fly!
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 12, day 24 of Turn 7
A'kades looked over the assembled weyrlings. Their dragonets had made
their first take-offs last sevenday, and done well. Now it was time
for the riders to mount their dragons and perform their first paired
flights. He remembered the joy of his own. Now he was honored to
oversee theirs.
He made a few last-minute corrections as he inspected the pairs. Most
of them looked good, a few had problems. "N'tas, your straps need to
be tighter here. You don't want to fall off Tigrath," he told the
brownrider.
Now he looked at the group. "Who wants to go first?"
Nearby, there were a few folk who were watching. Some of them were
riders who were older and retired. Some of them were weyrfolk watching
their children. To the right of the small crowd stood two lone figures.
"Lenala, I hope she does well enough." So far Rhosyn had stayed out of
Lanniya's training, choosing to read reports from the weyrlingmasters and
observe from afar. Soon enough, though, it would be time to begin
integrating specific lessons into her education.
Lenala nodded in agreement. She was secretly rooting for A'dryn. Something
in that young greenrider and his dilemma had touched her.
}: I should go first. :{ Anaeryth stepped forward, her head held upwards.
Lanniya followed, her heart pounding with excitement. They were about to
fly!
Something she had dreamed about and...she shook herself back to pay
attention,
and exhaled slowly. She cleared her throat. "We will."
A'kades was glad she had volunteered herself, rather than having them tap
her to go first. It was a good trait in a goldrider. "Lift off of the
ground, then go to the point that's marked. Don't fly above the weyrbowl's
height. Go when ready."
Volaith sent Anaeryth the image of the appropriate place to stop, then
settled back to watch her.
She took a breath, but bouncing slightly in her straps in excitement,
Lanniya gripped her straps. **Are you ready?**
Anaeryth answered far more calmly, her eyes steady. }: Of course. This
is what is meant to be. :{ Anaeryth approached the drop off, spread
her wings and with a steady leap, jumped into the air. The steady
beats of her wings jostled Lanniya at first, but the straps kept her
steady. The young gold found her gait easily and found the air with a
croon of excitement. Lanniya couldn't help the wide smile that spread
on her mouth. It was _wonderful_ and it felt so...._right_!
Anaeryth flew to the mark indicated and landed with a little proud
flare of her wings. Lanniya gave a whoop of glee and turned to look
towards A'kades with a triumphant smile.
"Very good," A'kades said to her, a broad smile on his face.
}:You landed perfectly,:{ Volaith told the gold weyrling. }:What a
good example.:{
A'dryn watched with a mix if excitement and anxiety. He was glad
Lanniya went first. She was a goldrider after all and would soon be a
leader in the Weyr.
}:We fly now?:{ Nalarith asked. She was nearly vibrating with excitement.
**Soon, love.** A'dryn wanted a few more pairs to go first so he could
watch. He didn't want to make any mistakes.
"Ah look, she had no problems." Rhosyn found herself breathing a sigh of
relief. Lanniya's ability to follow instructions boded well for the future.
Sometimes young gold dragonets had a mind of their own and if their riders
couldn't control them, that could lead to issues. Lenala's case came to
mind.
"Good," Lenala said.
Standing on the sideline, U'das removed his glasses to rub his eyes.
From this distance, the weyrlings' faces were just a blur. He couldn't
tell them part but from hair colour and body build. Putting the glasses
back on didn't improve it much. **Shards,** he needed stronger glasses
again. He had to rely on Zack to tell him if he was needed.
}:Nalarith, it is your turn now,:{ Volaith told the green nearest him.
She looked very eager and he found it amusing. }:Remember to go to the
line, just like Anaeryth.:{
The young gold stepped proudly back as another got ready. She blinked
serenely at Volaith. }: Of course I did. How could you expect any
different? :{
Lanniya watched A'dryn, hoping that he would do well, but knowing he
was nervous. She wanted to call encouragement to the pair, but
refrained, not wanting the little green to be distracted.
}:Our turn!:{ The green spread her wings.
A'dryn's heart hammered. **Careful, now.**
Nalarith lifted off, a bit too fast. A'dryn jerked in the straps as
they climbed and for a moment he was terrified. But Nalarith's
wingbeats were strong and steady and his fear fell away. A delighted
grin stretched his face. }:We were born for this.:{ Nalarith's
happiness flowed through him. Oh, this was wonderful!
Then he realized how high they were getting. **Not above the
weyrbowl!** Reluctantly, the green leveled out and headed for the
marked point.
}:I could go higher. Farther. We could fly for a long time.:{
A'dryn took a deep breath. He didn't need to get yelled at in front of
everyone again. **Soon, love. Not today.** Nalarith landed neatly,
wings outstretched and head head high in what suspiciously seemed like
a pose. A little laugh escaped A'dryn.
Lenala smiled at the sight of young green's posing. "So adorable," she
remarked.
"A'dryn, my compliments to Nalarith. That was an excellent landing,"
A'kades said.
Volaith added a rumble of agreement. }:Once the others have gone, you may
go again.:{
"The next pair is Fadira..." the bronzerider began.
