Alina

}:Is this where you sleep?:{ Imarith poked her head in the narrow door, blocking the view before Alina could step inside. }:This is your wallow?:{

**Weyr. Yes, this is it.** Alina exhaled as she stepped past her dragon, from the blinding sunlight into the shadow of the weyr. _Her_ weyr. It was finally time for them to leave the Weyrling Barracks.

The room was small, with a narrow bed, a tiny table with two chairs, and an upright wardrobe whose doors had seen better days. The walls were plastered in an off-white and the floor was smooth stone. Alina walked over to the bed and slowly sat down. The mattress felt a little lumpy - it was probably stuffed with straw - but the plain brown coverlet was smooth cotton beneath her palms. The light shimmered and grew brighter as Imarith lost interest and turned her attention to the Weyrbowl far below.

This was all hers. For the first time in her life, Alina didn't have to share a bed or a room with someone else. No more snorting or late-night giggles from the bunk next to hers. No more waking up with Elana having stolen most of the covers... although those days had ended as soon as she was Searched. This tiny room belonged to her and no one else.

She took a deep breath and lay back on the bed, feeling slightly ridiculous sprawled out in her riding leathers even though there was no one to see. And excited, and proud, and sad all at once. This room was hers because she'd gotten so far in her weyrling training... and in some ways it spelled the end of her life as a child. The occasion should have been marked with a cot of her own and a handsome husband to carry her over the threshold. She should be dressed in her gather best with pink flowers woven into her dark hair. Instead she had a tiny, drab little room and a pair of ugly leather trousers to keep the Thread off.

}:And me,:{ Imarith said tentatively. }:You and I are together now.:{

Immediately Alina squashed her feelings down and sent as much love as she could muster to her dragon. **I know.**

}:Why are you so mixed up inside?:{

Imarith didn't usually keep asking questions after Alina reassured her. Perhaps she was growing up too. Sighing, Alina sat up again and rubbed her closed eyes with her fingertips. **I'm just... I'm surprised that this is my life, that's all. I didn't expect you to choose me.**

}:Of course I did! You were the only one on the Sands who would suit me,:{ Imarith shot back, sounding smug.

**It was still a surprise.** She shouldn't have Impressed when her twin didn't. It wasn't right, or fair. And yet there they were, with a million miles and a dragon between them, and nothing would ever be the same. Tears pricked at her eyes so Alina rubbed them away again. There was no use in crying over something she couldn't change. And it wasn't all bad. She had a drab little room all to herself, and a brilliantly green dragon waiting on the wallow just outside the door. And beyond that, all of the Weyrbowl spread beneath them, verdant green and sparkling blue.

But for now, it just seemed lonely.
