K'mai

Uetia's pregnancy had progressed past the half way mark now and it was starting to make her uncomfortable. It was hardly a surprise she was twisting restlessly in her bed.

***
Uetia startled and sit up, a bed fur sliding to the ground. There was a dark figure at the doorway. "Who?" she asked blearily.

The dark figure stepped inside. "Uetiaaa," the voice was low hiss. She pushed the glowstone basket's lid off.

On the ledge, Sirjath stirred and her eye lids started to crack open.

Uetia muffled a cry. It was Sabonus...dead Sabonus. Fishes had eaten most of the flesh away, revealing the skeleton. His clothes had rotten to rags hanging from the bones, sea weed covered his shoulders and head. Empty eye sockets turned to look at her. "I came for you Uetia. Come with me, join me at the ssseabottom. It'ss sso peaceful," he reached his skeletal arms towards her. Grey, rotten flesh fell off to the floor from them.

"No," Uetia said and shook her head in denial. This wasn't happening. Dead men didn't come back.

"Join mee, my love," the remains of Sabonus hissed and came closer and closer.

"No, leave me alone...the baby!" Uetia crawled backwards and protected her belly with her hands.

"Uetiaa.." he reached for her throat.

***
Sirjath was wide awake now, eye facets swirling with distress. }: Wake up! :{ she called to her rider.

Uetia bolted up from her bed with a scream. She looked wildly around. No dead weyrmates, nothing. It had been just a nightmare. She crumbled to the floor.

}: I'm here , :{ Sirjath sent a wave of love to her.
Uetia curled into fetal position, sobbing hysterically.

She needed help, Sirjath decided, more help than a dragon could
provide. There was two people who always made her rider feel better. The harper didn't have a dragon and Sirjath didn't know how to reach him but the other one...

}: Sebeth! :{ she woke up the blue. }: My rider needs yours. :{

The blue was groggy, but he responded to the eagerness in Sirjath's tone. }:Wake up mine. Sirjath says her rider needs you.:{

K'mai rubbed his eyes, still half asleep. **Huh?** Then a thought occurred to him and he sat up. **Is she hurt? Is the baby okay?** He remembered helping with that poor girl Bahji when she fell down the stairs and lost her baby. E'rae's baby.

}:Is your rider okay? And her egg? Mine remembers something bad,:{ Sebeth said to the green.

}:No, not the egg. She's seeing things, things that aren't there when she sleeps. Things that scare her, :{ Sirjath tried to explain something she didn't quite understand herself. Dragons didn't see nightmares and if they dreamed, they didn't remember it.

K'mai let out a breath, tension easing. A nightmare, then. But he still hurried to pull on a pair of pants and strap on sandals. In a short while he was knocking on her door. "Uetia?" Through the dragons, he let her know that he was here, in case she hadn't heard. Then he pushed open the door and made his way to her bed.

Finding her curled up and crying, his heart broke for her. "Hey," he said gently, laying a hand on her shoulder. "I'm here."

"K'mai? Are you real?" Uetia asked, getting up to sitting position. After her nightmare, she wasn't sure what was real and what was dream.

"Yes, love. I'm real." He brushed sweaty hair from her forehead and kissed her hot skin. Joining her on the bed, he slipped an arm around her. "Do you want to talk about it?"

"I had a nightmare about Sabonus. He was dead and he wanted me dead too," Uetia replied and pressed herself against him. His warm presence comforted her.

"Oh, honey." He held her tight. "It's just your mind playing tricks on you. You know he'd never want that."

"I know. He would be so happy about this," she stroked her belly that now bulged prettily. "He always wanted to have children while I was more hesitant." She buried her face against K'mai's shoulder. "Could you stay with me for the rest of the night?" she asked.

"Of course." He rubbed at her back. "I can't replace him, but I'm here for you whenever you need me." Even if the child hadn't been possibly his, K'mai would still do what he could to support Uetia. The Weyr would take care of her physical needs, and the baby's too, but people still needed emotional support.

"Thanks K'mai. You're wonderful," Uetia replied. She was slowly
starting to drift back to sleep.

He pulled away long enough to kick off his sandals, then he got her settled under the light covers and cuddled against her. "Sweet dreams."
