The Sea Wife slid sped across the water, driven by a light breeze that filled her snowy sails. The trip between Sunstone Seahold and the Seacraft Hall would take such little time that it seemed silly to have chartered a ship at all, although Taril was more than happy not to walk the few miles between Hold and Hall-- or worse, ride in this weather. The rain had let up a bit but the sky remained heavy and dark with storm clouds. He leaned against the rail and let himself be homesick, very briefly -- he missed the sea, the sound of the waves against the hull, the snap of rope and tang of brine. But a one-legged sailor was more of a liability than a boon, and this life... it was over for him the moment that he'd been pinned by an anchor.
Someone joined him at the rail, and Taril smiled when he was it was Bryvin. "Enjoying the view?"
"Oh yes," he said as he leaned his forearms against the rail. In is own distant past he'd spent a bit of time on the sea. Not enough to be a true sailor but enough to know port from starboard and how to tie a decent knot. "It's been awhile. How about you?"
"Months," Taril admitted. He turned back to the open ocean. "Last time I went home. I should to take Humari there..." he trailed of, wondering if his wife would be able to make the trip any time soon. And then after, when they had a baby who could potentially be the next Holder at Red Tide Rocks. He should have brought her home sooner.
"You should," Bryvin nodded. "A sea voyage in the summer can be a very pleasant adventure and not too stressing on the ladies of delicate condition. Perhaps I should take my wife for a short trip, maybe to the Weyr. What do you think?"
The merchant raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure you want to expose Lady Xeladrie to the Weyr?"
He took the man's meaning with a tilt of his head and a nod. "It is politically necessary for us to visit the Weyrleaders and pay our respects. K'sedel is quite sensitive to the needs of the Holds and I want to be the same with the Weyr. I'm sure we'd be entertained appropriately and M'Lady is well trained in her duties. I'm sure her mother taught her and I will warn her and keep her safe if the need arises."
"You're a braver man than I, then," Taril said with a shake of his head. Perhaps Bryvin was right -- perhaps it was necessary for the Lord and Lady. But their situations were different. Xeladrie didn't share Humari's... interests. "I haven't been to the Weyr in a very long time. Have you met the new Weyrwoman?"
"I have," he nodded. "Though I wasn't the Lord at the time. She is rather... provocative, if that's a good word for it."
So he'd heard. But it never hurt to hear more. "Oh?"
Bryvin smirked. "You'd have to see it to believe it. Her clothing leaves little to the imagination."
"Heh." Taril felt his expression mirror Bryvin's. The women of the Weyr were noted for their lack of modesty, much to many a sailor's delight. "Let's hope that we have the chance to believe it at the Seacraft Hall. I'd imagine the Weyrleaders will be making the trip."
"You're probably right," he nodded. Then he noticed shipfish dancing in the waves created by the passage of the ship. He grinned at Taril. "It's good to be on the sea."
The merchant nodded and turned back to the waves, a slight smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "Aye, it is."
