"May I have this dance?" A very large middle aged bronze rider
approached their newest goldrider. His smile wreathed his face.
"Anaeryth is lovely and perfect by the way."

"Yes, please." Lanniya smiled at Y'gel, overtly showing fondness for
the man. If it hadn't been for him and Soliera, she might not have
ever Impressed Anaeryth. She then said as much. "I owe you a lot,
Y'gel. If it hadn't been for you...I wouldn't have had her."

He angled his elbow to offer her escort to the dance floor. "Oh I
think she would have found you either way Lanniya. You were meant for
each other. Just like Aughashyth and I were on the Sands so very long
ago." He tilted his head toward where the dancers were forming up.
"Come on," he smiled.

She tucked her hand in the offered arm. "Glad to." With relish Lanniya
kicked off the shoes that had been "encouraged" on her and then
followed him onto the dance floor. She gave a grin and twitched her
skirt. "I hate those things. But apparently, it'll make the Weyr look
bad if I go without them to meet people." She shrugged. "They pinch my
toes."

"Well, I don't think it's so bad to go without," he smiled. Y'gel
wasn't a spectacular dancer but he could guide a woman or in this case
a girl, around the dance floor with a tiny bit of skill. At least
enough not to crash them into anyone and keep up with the steps. Of
course eyes were on the newest goldrider. He guided her through the
press and onto the floor.

"Good." She looked around and then grinned impishly. "I never had to
wear them on the wagons except in winter. I like the feel of the
ground under my feet." She then shrugged. "It feels...freer." The eyes
on her bothered her a bit, but much like the dragon voices that she
heard, she was able to push them to the back of her mind to pay them
little attention. "I guess I'll have to get used to not going where
ever I like now, won't I?"

He chuckled when she talked about the shoes. Every gold rider had
quirks in his experience. If hers were shoes that wasn't so bad in his
experience. There were much worse things. "Well at least for a little
while you'll have to just stay around here," he said. "But after a
time you'll graduate and in your off hours you can go anywhere you
wish to go as long as you have the picture for it. But you'll learn
about that."

Her eyes became distant but excited as she considered it. "I can
travel again and it not take months. That would be wonderful. To see
beaches and dolphins and dance in the surf..." She nearly bounced at
the thought. "Anaeryth would love the beach, I think."

"We're not that far from the beach here," he said. "But you'll be able
to go to anyplace you want after you've trained with the
Weyrlingmasters and they approve you for it. There's more stuff
you'll need to learn of course about proper gold and bronze etiquette,
How you rank amongst golds. Stuff like that. But they'll teach you
about it all. Feel free to ask questions if you don't understand."

"There's so much to learn. I feel like my brain is about to be crammed
so full it's going to start squishing out of my ears, Y'gel." She
peered up at him. "And I've just started!"

He smiled down at her. "You'll get it, I promise. But it's going to
feel like that for awhile." He tilted his head. "Trust Anaeryth,
she'll always be there to support an love you. She'll probably even
try and boss you around. But you'll have to remind her that _you're_
the boss. There will be times when you can let her have her way and
others where you have to control her. You'll learn the difference. I
know you hear the other dragons but listen to the queens, they have
authority over all the other dragons. So will your Anaeryth one day."

Lanniya wrinkled her nose. "I guess you didn't hear about the egg
touching. Orlaith doesn't want to talk with me asking permission of
Rhosyn first." Her nose wrinkled. "None of the other dragons minded. I
don't know how Lenala would feel about it."

"And that's a reflection of Rhosyn herself. But no one will expect you
not to listen any more than you can decide to turn off your ears." He
smiled and nodded. "When you are able, it might be good for you to
speak with my weyrmate Briata. She also hears all the dragons."

"I've spoken to her already. She seems nice." She would have to be if
Y'gel was weyrmated to her. Lanniya glanced around and then spoke
softly. "Is Rhosyn nice? I can't really tell."

"She's very nice," he smiled. His weyrmate was close to perfect in his
own experience. She'd fulfilled his life and given him a son and more
happiness than he'd ever expected when he'd fallen in love with her.
But then he thought a moment about her question. 'Nice' wasn't a word
he'd apply to Rhosyn. Intense, or maybe complex, were better words.
"It rather depends," he said carefully. "I really like Rhosyn, but I
know she had a little bit of work to get to know."

"Oh." Lanniya seemed to think about that for a moment. "I guess I'll
be getting to know her really well, then."

"Most likely," he chuckled. "Though I imagine more of your time will
be spent with Lanala."

The one concerned about the shoes. "Oh. I don't know her well."

"Don't worry you will," he laughed. "But don't be surprised if she's
all about beauty and how to flirt."

Lanniya blinked up at Y'gel. "Really?" She sounded uncertain. "I
really don't care about all that."

"Yes, well," he coughed slightly realizing he was veering from the
main topic. "Someday you'll be as important as a Lady in a Hold.
You'll have to know how and Lenala can teach you. Learn everything
they want to teach and then later you can decide what is important to
you." The dance was coming to a close and there were others with
their eyes on the pair. So he bowed and thanked her for the dance.

----
Y'gel had been so pleasant that night and he had been right. She
hadn't spent much time with Rhosyn or Lenala yet. She had to get the
basics of riding down first and there was time for the rest. But she
wanted to dance again and there just didn't seem to be enough time for
anything like that!

The call of her name startled her out of her reverie and Lanniya sat
up amid the soft laughter of her classmates. She blinked, then focused
on the weyrlingmaster. "Sorry. Could you repeat that?"
