Lanniya

The attention was starting to get a little overwhelming; she had
smiled so much that her cheeks felt sore and she had to admit that
some of the bronze and brownriders weren't very good dancers. They had
trod all over her toes. She wiggled them and took a drink of water,
ducking behind a tall blue rider for a moment to stretch and finish
her drink.

"You won't be able to hide away for much longer," K'sedel said as he watched
the young weyrling."

She jumped, holding her chest in surprise before she exhaled.
"Weyrleader....you startled me." She offered a smile as she took a drink. "I
know, I just needed a rest is all. I wasn't expecting everyone to want to
meet me."

"Goes with the territory I'm afraid," K'sedel said. "Today, you're the belle
of the ball. those new knots you've just earned. They mean everyone is going
to know who you are."

"It's going to take some getting used to." She admitted after
finishing her water, then put down the glass. "I mean, before I came
here, I really wasn't anyone special." She pushed her hair back from
her face as she faced him. Her eyes twinkled. "You haven't danced with
me yet. Don't think I hadn't noticed."

"I was here to offer," he said simply. "but it will put you back in the
spotlight. They notice who goldriders dance with."

"I gathered that." Lanniya slipped her hand over his arm. "I just
don't see why. It's not like I'm going to be Weyrwoman tomorrow." She
paused and blinked, brow furrowed at the realization that someday she
could be. "Or any time soon."

"It's the anytime soon," the Weyrleader explained as he led her to the
dance floor. "Teseada at Dragonsfall found herself graduating to Weyrwoman's
second, so it could happen."

"Well, lets hope not for now, okay?" She faced him and curtsied,
uncaring of the eyes around them. She leaned forward a bit and
grinned. "Shh... I kicked off the shoes."

"I won't tell." From what Nikornath had told him the girl just didn't like
to wear shoes unless she had to.

"Thank you." The music was easy to dance to and K'sedel was a good
partner, she discovered. "So can you give me any advice, K'sedel? I
don't want to mess up too badly."

"Be yourself," he said as the music led them into a turn. "Try your hardest
in class, listen to the weyrlingstaff, they are there to help. but most
importantly, no matter how hard it seems, enjoy it, because once you are in
the wings, things will change rapidly."

Her nose wrinkled a little. "I really don't like class too much.
Listening to lectures gets boring." She admitted wryly. "I mean, I try
and all, but I'd rather be outside. And I don't know how to be anyone
besides me anyway." She moved in time to the music, though she was
clearly in thought. "Well, I'm sure you've worked with a lot of
goldriders, right? What do you think makes a good one?"

"One who's honest, who knows how to communicate with those around her.
Someone who is willing to learn from her mistakes."

"I'll be learning quite a bit then." She flashed a grin. "I'm sure
I'll make plenty of mistakes."

"Show me a weyrling that doesn't," said K'sedel with a laugh.

She giggled and turned as he did. "So what's the worst thing I could do?"

"Seriously, breaking the ban on relations while a junior weyrling, dragons
can be lost that way," he paused as the music did. "Less seriously, being
the class clown, because nobody will want a prankster in their wing."

Her brows rose immediately and pink stained her cheeks. "Oh, that. No,
I wasn't planning on doing that any time soon." She lowered her voice.
"That's all the green dragons talk about sometimes. It can get a
little embarrassing." She cleared her throat. "I'm not really a prank
type of person. I like jokes," she mused, "but not tricks."

"That's good to hear."

She peered up to him and tilted her head to the side. "Can I come talk
to you if I need to? Or Nikornath?"

"Of course, but you first port of call should be the Weyrlingmaster," he
reminded her gently.

She blinked. "Oh, of course. Yes. I'll do that."

"Being a part of your class is important. There are over thirty of you, I
know it's a big number, but they are the people you'll be spending most of
the next six months with them and by working together it'll get easier for
you all."

She tilted her head to the side. "So, it's like a big family?"

"In a way," agreed K'sedel as the music began to slow. "A family that could
end up spread all over Pern."

As the music faded, Lanniya stepped away. "Good. I'd like a large family."
She dipped a curtsey. "Thank you for the dance, K'sedel."

The Weyrleader gave the semi-formal bow the dance demanded. "And to you
goldrider."
