N'vanik

"Saidrene," N'vanik said as he stepped into the weyrlake. "How are
things going?" He'd spotted her little green and Loseth had no
objections to joining them.

Saidrene, who had been bent over lathering up her brush, straightened
immediately when she heard the voice of the Weyrleader, "Oh! N'vanik!
I mean, Weyrleader... Sir." Oh, Faranth, he was dressed for the
water-- which meant that Saidrene was getting an eyeful of beautiful,
muscled male.

"Things are going.. uh... well." She slapped her brush into her hand
without thinking, splattering herself with soapy water.

Ashareth twisted her head, eyeing her rider with curiosity.

"No need to call me sir," he said with a smile. "Ashareth seems to be
growing well."

The topic of her dragon made Saidrene feel a little more at ease,
although it was awfully hard considering she was in a two-piece
bathing suit standing beside of the man of her dreams. Or at least,
she had dreamed of him often enough, especially in conjunction with
thoughts of Ashareth's first flight.

"Thank you. Sometimes it seems as if she'll never be big enough for us
to fly, and then sometimes I stand back and realize just how much
she's grown since the night we met on the Sands."

N'vanik chuckled. "The days might seem endless, but it flies by, too.
Weyrlinghood is like that." Grabbing a handful of sweetsand, he got to
work on Loseth's hide.

"That is what everyone keeps saying, and I hope it is true. I would
like nothing more than to hurry up and get to the part where Ashareth
and I are in the privacy of our own weyr." Saidrene wasn't
anti-social, but she did enjoy having her alone time, which was hard
to get in the barracks.

"Shards, yes. I hated the barracks. Thankfully I was too tired most of
the time to think about it much." Having to sleep, eat, and bathe with
other people all the time made him want to run away.

Saidrene supposed she was not tired enough since she had _plenty_ of
thoughts about the man washing dragons beside of her. "I look forward
to Riyanth's eggs hatching, then Ashareth and I won't be the new kids
on the block anymore."

"How do you like the rest of your class? Getting along?" N'vanik took
out the brush to reach higher.

"Yes, everything is fine. I really like Alina, even though she's
holdbred and has some weird ideas... Of course if she was here she
would say that _I_ have weird ideas." Saidrene chuckled thinking of
her fellow green Weyrling.

"She's the one that hurt her leg, right? Is she all healed up?" If
something was wrong it would have been reported to him, but he wanted
to ask anyway.

Saidrene flicked her long hair over her shoulder, "I guess it is. She
hasn't said anything about it bothering her lately."

"That's good. I'm glad you found a friend. Both of you."

}:Hello little one.:{ Loseth peered down at the green.

}:Hello!:{ Ashareth said jovially to the Weyrleader, having to stretch
her green head back as far as it would go in order to look up at the
bronze.

"I hear that there may be some congratulations in order for you in the
near future with Jeyme's baby?" Saidrene inquired politely, hoping
that it was a good topic for the Weyrleader and not a sore spot.

"Ah, yes." His smile was a little wistful. At least things had gotten
better on that front. "The timing puts it around her flight, so it
might be mine. Which pleases D'hol to no end of course."

}:You are growing well my hatchling.:{ He was quite proud of himself
for making many strong dragons.

}:Thank you.:{ Ashareth preened under the bronze's compliment.

"I hope I am not being too forward when I say that I hopeI am picked
for your Wing and not his. He seems... cantankerous." Although her
mother had never had anything bad to say about D'hol, Saidrene thought
him to be a bit intimidating.

N'vanik considered it with a thoughtful frown. "I hate to bring up a
sore subject, but do you think you'd be able to get along with
J'ackt?"

Saidrene stopped what she was doing and turned to regard the
Weyrleader. Did he know then about her and J'ackt? Saidrene had never
told anyone about what had taken place, but then, maybe J'ackt wasn't
so tight-lipped about it. "J'ackt and I get alone fine, I would say we
are friends even. At least, I seem to be able to get along with him
better than most anyone else in the Weyrling group." She didn't always
agree with the things that the young bronzerider did, but Saidrene
couldn't help but feel that J'ackt was simply a product of the life he
had lived before.

N'vanik nodded. "That's good. I asked because it's not hard to guess
what Wing he's ending up in." He certainly wouldn't subject J'ackt to
D'hol, and he didn't think any of the other Wingleaders could handle
him either.

The young greenrider chuckled, "Yes, I suppose he does need a bit
more.. supervision than some of the other riders. Normally J'ackt
doesn't bond well to males at all, only females. You are an
exception."

"I get where he's coming from." N'vanik didn't know if anyone else
did. Or could. "And I always knew he had potential."

Saidrene studied the Weyrleader for a moment, "ThenI hope this means I
am unofficially a future rider of the Weyrleader's Wing.... Should
everything continue to go well until I graduate." There was a teasing
gleam in her eyes.

He laughed and sent a splash of water her way. "Don't get ahead of yourself."

She shot him a grin, "There's nothing wrong with planning ahead is there?"

"I'm _considering_ you for my wing. I'm still considering everyone at
this point." He grabbed another handful of sweetsand. "But at the risk
of swelling your ego, Dolphin Cove is lucky to have you." She seemed
to have a good head on her shoulders and yet she wasn't too serious.

Saidrene tried to contain the smile and pleasure that N'vanik's words
brought, "Thank you, Weyrleader." It felt good to earn something on
her own merit and not because her mother was a Weyrwoman.
