"K'ran! K'ran, wait up!" Genna rushed through the crowd when she spotted
the Wingleader amongst the crowd. When she caught up with him, slightly out
of breath, she suddenly realised how inappropriate it might seem to others,
for a weyrling to approach a Wingleader like that. But K'ran had never
seemed to mind, so she shrugged it off.
"Do you have a moment for me? I'd like to ask you something." She was going
to say something urgent, but looking at it objectively, it really
wasn't. However, it was her first day off since being allowed to /between/
on her own and she really wanted to use it right. Going somewhere her mind
would be blown. If he couldn't spare the time to give her some tips and
Lissath the images, she'd go visit her family. But that really felt like it
could wait one more week...
"I have a moment," the short bronzerider said with a genial smile. "How
have you and Lissath been?"
"We are doing fine, thank you," Genna smiled, giving a small curtsy for the
fun of it. "You and Rogueth are both doing equally well, I hope?"
"Haven't been scored yet," he said with a smile.
"Always good to hear," Genna grinned. "What I was going to say -" her words
were cut short by Lissath's interjection.
**They want me to let you know the hatching you talked about going to is
happening. Now.** The young gold delivered the message with a
heavily feigned disinterest, having told her rider before that no clutch
was ever going to be anything interesting unless it was hers.
Genna had cocked her head slightly with glazed over eyes as she listened to
Lissath, the universal sign of a rider conversing with her dragon. Then a
look of disappointment crossed her face. She had forgotten to arrange a
ride. Her eyes quickly found K'ran's, to see if he had gotten the news as
well. Perhaps he would be going, as a Wingleader?
K'ran's head also tilted as he heard from Rogueth that the River Bluff
Hatching was occurring. "Are you going, weyrwoman?" It was traditional for
the goldriders to attend each others hatchings, but if her own gold would
let her be carried by another while still a weyrling, he wasn't sure.
Every dragon was peculiar in their own way about it.
"I was going to, I had permission to go and talked things through with
Lissath and everything, only..." she bit her lip and blushed a little,
feeling quite the foolish one. "I kind of forgot to arrange a ride."
"We could take you," he told her immediately. "We could take a moment to
get dressed formally - we'll still arrive on time."
"You could?" Genna's eyes lit up again in enthusiasm. "That would be great.
I'll just run to my weyr real quick and change, then meet you back here?"
"Works for me," he told the young goldrider.
He had to get a quick lift from Rogueth back to their weyr since it was a
little farther away than those for goldriders and other rankers. Dressing
up for the event was easy. He usually wore the same two outfits to gathers
and hatchings. This time it was formal black pants and a wraparound tunic
in a soft material in a dark green color. It even had a bit of embroidery
in bronze thread. Then he added the passenger strapping to his dragon
before going back down to meet Genna.
Rogueth took him back down to the Weyrbowl and reached for Lissath. }:My
rider is here and we can help your rider up. Don't worry, I will take only
the best care of a queen's rider,:{ he added.
**Charmer,** his rider thought.
At lease Genna shouldn't have a problem riding his dragon. Lissath was
going to be bigger than Rogueth before weyrlinghood ended.
}: He'd better :{ Lissath bit sharply at Rogueth's words. }: But she
is coming. :{
Lissath wasn't too keen on Genna going away to that other gold's
hatching, but she trusted Genna's opinion that it was a good
opportunity to meet with important people. People they might need to
call upon one day. So she'd allow Genna to go, on the condition that
she'd tell all about the people she'd met when she came back.
Meanwhile Genna had spotted Rogueth across the bowl and picked up her
pace, the sapphire blue dress rustling around her ankles. Her father
had sent her the dress not too long ago, but she'd had it altered just
a bit. The gold thread embroidered top had been awkwardly modest and
was now just low-cut enough to draw some attention.
"K'ran," she waved as she approached with a smile.
"Your dress is lovely. Need help mounting?" he asked her as Rogueth
crouched low.
"Yes please, it's not going to look very elegant in this dress," Genna
grinned a bit sheepishly as she reached out for K'ran's hand. Long
dresses like that weren't made for riding dragons. She had to remember
to ask Paetri or Teseada how they did it.
He helped her up and settled her on Rogueth, then seated himself
behind her and made sure they were both strapped in securely. A mental
check confirmed that they hadn't missed the Hatching yet.
}:We'll be back soon,:{ bronze assured gold as they took to the sky,
before they went /between/ to River Bluff.
The temperature change hit immediately, the weather warmer than
Dragonsfall. The heights were crowded with dragons, the bowl a hive of
activity. But the humming was still anticipatory and not yet at the
pitches it would be if the eggs were cracking. They landed in a
corner, and K'ran was grateful for Rogueth's small size. He
unstrapping them and dismounting first, ready to assist her down
}: I'll be here. :{ Lissath replied dryly as she settled on her ledge
to spend this time by herself watching the activity down below.
When they entered the sky above Riverbluff Weyr, Genna immediately
realised her mistake. This dress wasn't very suited for the
temperature, even though she had found her lightest dress. She was in
for a lot of sweating. At such a formal event. She could already feel
Lissath's disapointment in her.
"Faranth, I hadn't accounted for this big a change in temperature,"
she said as she reached out for his hand in order to dismount.
He enjoyed the wash of heat, being used to this kind of environment
from previous Weyrs, but he realized he should have said something. "I
should have warned you," he said ruefully as he helped her down.
"It should be cooler inside the caverns, though."
"I should have known myself," Genna said quickly. "I knew it was going
to be hot, but I hadn't expected it to be like this!" With her feet
back on the ground she straightened her dress. "Let's find ourselves a
place then! Or do we have assigned seats, or something?" She hadn't
thought to ask.
"There ought to be ushers to direct us to the right section. Visitors
get certain parts of the Stands. Though as visiting minor rank, we
might be able to get closer seats," he added with a smile.
"Great," Genna smiled. She was really eager to see the hatching, especially
with the gold egg. She was curious to hear the crowd's murmurs this time,
things she hadn't been able to hear when Lissath found her on the
sands. She looked K'ran in the eyes with a grateful smile. "Thank you for
bringing me!"
"No problem. It'll be a good time, and good for you to see how it is at
another Weyr," he added. She'd be pleasant company, and it would be a good
time.
