Characters: Uetia, Soulla
Description: Uetia visits midwife to make her pregnancy officially confirmed.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 9, day 16 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Jaylene, Sabonus; precedes "Change in a Wing" and follows: "Be or Not to Be"
Uetia had scheduled a meeting with one of the Weyr's midwives and was
now waiting to be called in. She had reached the point where she
couldn't deny it any longer. She might be pregnant. Her spells of
dizziness and nausea, general crankiness and moping around..Sirjath's
next mating flight couldn't explain it, there was around two months
for it. Sabonus' absence was only part of the explanation. It might
explain why she was in bad mood and sulky but not why she felt like
throwing up if she got up too quickly. And then Jaylene had dragged her to meet the dolphins.
Soulla's round cheeks were lifted into a smile as she shooed off the
young mother and infant child that had come in for a final check-up.
It had been an easy pregnancy for the woman and the child was
incredibly healthy, which just made Soulla's job that much easier.
When she looked down the list at her next appointment on the chart she
noted that it was not a name she recognized immediately as being one
of her prior patients.
"Uetia?" she called.
"That's me," Uetia said and got up. She was tall and muscular woman,
with platinum-blond hair kept short. She didn't show her condition
outwardly yet.
The corners of Soulla's eyes crinkled as she smiled and waved Uetia
back through the doorway to the cozy examination room, "Come on in
then, dear, and tell me what I can do for you today."
"I think I'm pregnant. Well, I'm pretty sure I'am pregnant," Uetia
replied. She saw no reason to beat around bushes. Being straightforward
spared lot of the time.
"Pregnancies are such a wonderful thing." Soulla crooned as she shut
the door behind Uetia. "Is this a planned child or from a flight?" The
midwife questioned as she motioned for Uetia to sit up on the
examination table.
"Definently not planned," Uetia replied and hopped up to the exam
table. "I do have non-rider Weyrmate, so it's probably his," she
continued. She couldn't be 100 percent sure, for there was also
Sirjath's recent Flight.
Soulla had seen couples handle unexpected pregnancies different over
the many Turns that she had beed a midwife. She only hoped that Uetia
and her weyrmate would be able to enjoy the experience. "Have you had
any children before?"
"Nope," Uetia replied curtly and shook her head. What she wanted to do
was wail: I'm too young for this! I'm not ready!
"Let me just get all of your normal vitals first and then you can
change out of your bottoms there so that I may properly examine you."
Soulla said as she pressed a stethoscope to Uetia's chest and listened
to the strong thumping of the greenrider's heart. She checked Uetia's
temperature and other vitals, "I'll just step out for a quick moment,
just put the sheet over your bottom half when you are finished."
"Alright," Uetia said. She found herself blushing and more than little
uncomfortable when she changed. She normally hadn't any reservations for
being seen in scantily clothes or with no clothes at all. But now it was all different
somehow. She was different, even if there wasn't much of physical
signs of her pregnancy yet.
Soulla smiled at Uetia and patted the greenrider's arm gingerly, "This
won't take but a moment dear." The midwife quickly went about her
business, performing the usual tests on Uetia to see if she was indeed
carrying a child.
"Congratulations," the woman finally breathed, a glow lighting her
eyes, "you are carrying a little one." She turned and washed her hands
thoroughly with redwort.
Uetia nodded, feeling more than little bewildered and nervous. She was
confirming her what the dolphins had told and somehow that made it
more real. "Do you have any idea how far along I am?"
Soulla tilted her head a bit, "Can't say for sure, of course, without
knowing the exact date, but I would say you are very close to the
middle of your first trimester."
Uetia nodded. "So, when will I gave birth then?" she asked.
"That'll be around the first half of month one, if everything goes
well." And Soulla worked very hard with her ladies to make sure that
everything went well.
"Alright. What happens next?" Uetia asked. She felt uncertain and
excited at the same time. Like she was entering previously unexplored
region. To her, this was unexplored ground. She had no experience of
pregnancies and not much knowledge either.
Soulla linked her aged hands together, "Well, your body will slowly
begin making changes to accommodate your child. Most women experience
some level of morning sickness, but with most that passes after a few
sevendays. You should steer clear of going /between/ during the first
and third trimester. You'll need to let your Wingleader know about
your new condition as well."
"Al right," Uetia said with a nod. "I haven't been really sick, just
little bit queasy. But I do feel dizzy now and then, is that normal?"
"Yes, it is not unusual. Just rest often and take care of yourself and
your body will do the rest." Soulla assured the nervous young mother.
"I'll see you again in a couple of sevendays just to check on your
progress."
"Yes, ma'am," Uetia replied obediently.
