Lanniya

Lanniya

Done with her classes for the day, Lanniya put away her hides and
waved to the other Candidates as she began walking back to her
grandparents weyr. Her walk became more of a skip as she hummed to
herself; today had simply been a marvelous day. The classes were
interesting, she was making friends and she truly enjoyed living here.
She sighted a bronze and waved. **Hello!**

Menanth rumbled in surprise. }:The red haired one just talked to me.:{

**What?** D'ren got an image from his dragon and turned to see a girl
smiling. "Hello."

She smiled brightly and dipped a curtsey before bouncing back on her
toes. "Hello." She strode up and offered her hand without thought.
"I'm Lanniya. Nice to meet you."

"Nice to meet you, too." He took her hand. "My dragon said you talked
to him. Can you hear dragons?"

"Yup!" Lanniya nodded. "All the time. What's you and your bronze's name?"

"Oh, sorry." He smiled. "I'm D'ren, and this is Menanth."

}:Hello,:{ the bronze said as he turned whirling eyes on her. He had
decided she was nice and worth talking to.

"It's okay." Lanniya's smile broadened. "It's nice to meet both of
you." She turned to the bronze and dipped a quick curtsey. "You are
very handsome, Menanth."

The dragon lifted his wings. }:Yes, I know.:{

D'ren laughed. "Show off."

Lanniya tilted her head back to give a rippling laugh at the bronze's
antics. "Most bronzes are, I've noticed. But they deserve it. They do
work hard, after all."

"All dragons do. Some just have bigger heads about it." D'ren rolled
his eyes, but he was still smiling.

She turned wide eyes to him. "And do you have a big head along with
him?" A grin pulled at her mouth, dimples flashing. "I've noticed that
too."

D'ren made a face. "I hope not." If anything, it was the opposite.
"Maybe you can warn me if it starts to swell."

"Well, I can do like my grandmother does my grandfather. She hits him
on the back of the head."

The bronzerider laughed. "That would work." This is what it used to be
like, easy to talk to people, easy to be friendly.

Her smile broadened. "Yes, but what would people say if they just saw
me thwacking a bronzerider on the back of the head?"

"He deserved it?" D'ren teased.

Lanniya laughed and nodded. "Probably. If I didn't get in trouble for it."

"The trick is to pull me aside somewhere without witnesses. And then
I'd be too embarrassed to admit I'd been scolded by a Candidate." He
winked.

Her laughing giggles continued. "This is why I like riders. You guys
are so fun."

"You're pretty fun yourself." And Faranth he could use someone like
her in his life. "Where are you from, Lanniya?"

"Well, thank you. I'm from everywhere." Lanniya's dimples flashed. "My
grandparents are Traders."

"Oh, that's interesting. Did you enjoy traveling?"

"I didn't at first, but I got used to it really quickly. I love being
outside." She gestured around at the Weyr walls. " I don't get out as
much now because of all the lessons, but I manage to soak up enough
fresh air to make it worth it."

"What did you do before you were a trader?" D'ren asked as Menanth
lowered his head to get his eyeridge scratched.

"Well, before I lived with my grandparents, I lived with my parents.
They were Seacrafters." Her lips turned down a little and her eyes
flashed with grief. "They and my sister were lost in a storm." She
cleared her throat and forced a smile back on her face. "I've lived
with my grandparents ever since."

"I'm so sorry to hear that." He couldn't imagine losing his family
like that. It had been hard enough losing his friend I'ster.

She nodded slowly and then took a deep breath. "They wouldn't have
wanted me to be sad all the time, so I try to be happy instead."

"That's a good way of looking at it." If something happened to him, he
wouldn't want any of his loved ones to be miserable forever.

"It's made me appreciate life more." She closed her eyes, tilting her
face up to the sun with a wider smile. "There's so much to do and see
and I don't want to waste a second of it."

"How do you do it? How do you keep the sadness from swallowing you
up?" D'ren had gotten much better. The move to River Bluff had helped
a lot, but he still couldn't shake his sadness.

Her smile was a little sad and wistful. "I think of my mother and
father laughing together. They were happy and they loved each other.
Or I think of how my sister used to laugh when she was happy. There
was always laughter at home. They would have wanted me to keep
laughing too."

D'ren nodded. "I lost a friend to Thread and I haven't been the same
since. It's... hard to stay positive."

Sympathy filled her expression. "Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that." She
reached out to lightly pat his arm. "I don't know what would work to
make it better for you. I wish I did know."

"Maybe you can help just by being yourself. You seem so positive,
maybe some of it will rub off." He smiled.

At that she gave a little blush and smile. "Maybe it will."
