"Congratulations, Weyrwoman." The smooth baritone voice immediately
set her nerves on edge, and she felt the elation of the successful
Hatching flee. Despite his threatening demeanor at Kaibren's
birthingday party a month prior, K'yne had been suspiciously low key
about his arrival at Dragonsfall. In fact, Saibra rarely saw the man
at all, even though she knew that he visited Kaibren often outside of
her weyr.
Saibra's face remained passive as she turned and gave K'yne's
appearance a quick sweep. The brownrider was cleaned up, his defined
jawline gleaming from a fresh shave, his dark blue, nearly black eyes
guarded. His dark golden hair was combed back from his face, and she
hated to even admit to herself that he looked good enough to eat. He
looked so like her beloved K'fel, standing before her with his broad
shoulders, and long legs with his thumbs hooked casually in his belt
loops, that her heart ached.
"Speechless?" The word was accompanied with a smirk, drawing Saibra
back to her senses as she scowled at the arrogant brownrider.
"I was taught that if I didn't have anything good to say then I
shouldn't say anything at all." Saibra cocked a challenging eyebrow.
K'yne crossed his arms over his chest, "Where's your lover boy?" He
asked, looking around.
The Weyrwoman's eyes narrowed into a glare, "If you would like to
congratulate the Weyrleader you can find him yourself."
"You two were awfully affectionate at the Hatching in front of
everyone... including your _son_." K'yne's voice was accusing, his
eyes hard.
And just like that Saibra's ire was raised, her teeth clenched as she
fought to keep her voice level, "My personal life, or public behavior,
is none of your concern brownrider."
"You are the mother of my nephew, and with K'fel gone that makes
Kaibren partly my responsibility." K'yne answered back, his voice
never wavering. He never seemed to get ruffled, which just served to
make Saibra that much angrier.
"You have no such right!" Saibra hissed. "_I_ am his mother, and his
foster mother is the only other person with any authority over him.
You only get to see Kaibren because I _allow_ it. Remember that."
K'yne took a step forward, causing Saibra to tilt her head back in
order to look up at him and meet his eyes, "Do not ever threaten to
keep Kaibren from me." There was a threatening growl to his silky
voice.
The pair glared at each other in silence for a moment. Despite the
fact that K'yne was simply a brownrider of no authority, he seemed to
command some measure of control over Saibra, mostly because they had
been such good friends at one point in time- when K'fel was alive.
"Then remember your place. You may be a part of Kaibren's life, but
that doesn't make you a part of mine." Saibra fought the urge to step
back from K'yne's firm body, which was far too close in her personal
space bubble.
The harpers, who had been on break, suddenly struck up a soulful
melody, and all around K'yne and Saibra couples joined hands and began
dancing. With no words spoken between them, K'yne lifted his hand,
palm up, and as if spellbound, Saibra placed her hand in his and the
two of them fell easily into the steps of the dance.
The handsome couple moved with ease together, speaking volumes about
how well they knew one another despite their antagonistic
relationship. When the song ended K'yne raised Saibra's knuckles to
his lips, "Thank you for the dance."
Momentarily caught off guard, Saibra found her throat suddenly dry,
"Y-your welcome."
Snatching her hand back to herself, Saibra found herself wiping her
palms on her dress, and when she looked up at K'yne she felt sure he
realized how much he flustered her. Despite the confidence that he
exuded, and his typical arrogant nature, the brownrider said nothing,
he merely bowed to Saibra and then stepped back and disappeared into
crowd.
Watching the man's back as he strode away, Saibra exhaled a breath she
hadn't realized she'd been holding, "I need wine."
