Adjustments Being Made

Writers: Devin, Chelle
Date Posted: 6th October 2014

Characters: D'lorn, A'dryn
Description: Aldryn meets one of his instructors.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 9, day 2 of Turn 7

Aldryn's eyes flicked around the room as he stepped through the door.
He'd made sure to be early, but perhaps he was _too_ early. He was the
only one there. Choosing a seat near the front, he folded his hands on
the desk and waited.

The greenrider entered, carrying a file that held his notes and a few other
things. Some of the candidates had messages they needed to get. D'lorn
noted the new face and nodded to himself. With a Flight, there would be
quite a few new candidates soon. "Hello, I'm D'lorn of green Villith," he said
as he set his things down.

Aldryn stood. "A pleasure to meet you, sir. I'm Aldryn."

"And where do you come from, Aldryn?" He was listening as he gathered
and organized his things. It was a ritual he had to put himself in the mindset
of the classroom.

"Blue Creek Hold, sir. A minor hold under Garnet Valley." He missed
the familiarity, the quiet and his family.

"I was trader born so I'm afraid I don't really know much about that.
Are you adjusting allright?" He knew it could be hard leaving one's family
and everything they ever knew. Then they were bombarded almost.

"I'm... trying. It may take me some time, sir," the young man admitted.

"Ah what is it you're having problems with?" D'lorn sounded nonchalant
but in reality he was filing this away for future conversations.

"To be honest... almost everything, sir. The Weyr is so big and so
crowded. And all those huge dragons. And the..." Aldryn hesitated,
wondering if he would offend the 'Third. But certainly the man had to
understand Hold- and Hallbred Candidates struggled with the
differences. "The way people dress and act."

"Aye people are very different here because of those big dragons.
The way we dress is no different than most of the more tropical Holds
though. It's due to the heat after all." Of course he had travelled so much
as a trader he had seen most of it himself. "Unless you count our flying
leathers I guess. Before now..had you ever really travelled Aldryn?"

"No, sir. I went with my father and brothers to the farmholds a few
times, but that was all." Those trips had felt like an adventure, but
they were nothing compared to this.

"Ah so then this is quite different for you." D'lorn considered how best to
approach this situation. "Have you really been around a dragon then? The
first step to understanding why we do things is to understand them since
they are the reason why."

"The Search dragon was the only one I've seen up close until I came
here." The memory of going /between/ made him want to shudder. "To be
honest, sir, I find them intimidating. I'm trying to get more
comfortable around them. I thought assisting the weyrlings with
bathing their dragons might be a good place to start."

"Certainly yes and even those of us staff members. We try to make our
dragons available to you all for just that reason. And what's better, they
are used to young people coming up and asking them questions or that
sort of thing." He thought of Villith for a moment and that look that all
riders get when thinking of their dragon crossed his face.

"That would be wonderful. I want to make sure I have the best chance
possible for Impression." Anything he could do, he would.

"Come see me after lesson then." D'lorn stepped back as more of the others
filed in and they were about to begin.
