Savith studied the bright-topped person. She was not dark topped like her
rider, and her hide was pale and kind of...something. Her rider would have
a word for it. The dragonet lifted her head off the ground to track the
girl who walked by.
}:Why are you bright?:{
Lanniya stopped at the sudden voice and turned to look at the young
green. "Hm? Bright?" She blinked. "I'm bright? What do you mean?"
}:Your top.:{ The green pointed her snout at the girl's head. }:It's
bright colored, not dark.:{
"Oh..." Lanniya put a hand to her hair." Well, yes. I've always had
bright hair. My mother had bright hair and so did my sister, I think."
}:It's very pretty,:{ Savith confided quickly, as though afraid that
admitting that another person's hair was nice was tantamount to betraying
her rider somehow.
}:You have different tops but they don't mean anything like different hide
colors. I wonder why,:{ the green mused.
"Well, thank you." Lanniya walked over to the young green and curled her
legs under her to sit. "I really don't know why. But most people aren't the
same. Just like your hide isn't the same as any other green's. It would be
awfully confusing and boring if we all looked alike."
}:That is smart.:{ Savith decided. }:It is a good way to tell you apart,
too. You are similar. Do we look similar to you?:{
"In some ways, yes." Lanniya agreed. "But you each have different
shades and shapes in small ways, and your voices are all different."
Lanniya pushed her hair behind her ears. "What is your name?"
}:Our voices... hey, how come you're easy to talk to?:{ Savith pondered.
}:Oh, Savith.:{ she added quickly.
"Because I can hear you and most people can't." Lanniya grinned. "Nice to
meet you Savith. You're still young, aren't you?"
}:Yes, but I will soon be big and strong!:{
"Oh yes, of course you will be." Lanniya agreed. "I'm hoping to
Impress too you know. I'd love to be bonded to a dragon. All of you
are so wonderful."
}:We are, aren't we?:{ Savith preened. }:If you can talk to us you must be
worthy of us.:{
"I hope so." Lanniya sighed hopefully. "People say that is the case, but you
can never really know. I mean, Briata never Impressed, so I may not either."
That thought brought a frown. She didn't want to think about not Impressing;
all of her dreams rested on it. "What is your rider like? Is your rider a
girl or a boy?"
}:My rider is a girl. She is very nice to people, but she does not talk as
much as I think she should.:{
"Why not? I like talking. Sometimes it's really boring just having to
sit quietly in class. There's always something to talk about, don't
you think?"
}:I get bored often. I'd rather _do_,:{ Savith confessed. }:I don't know
why she doesn't like to talk, but maybe you can help her with that
sometime.:{
"Maybe. Perhaps you can tell her I'd like to meet her. I like riders."
}:Absolutely,:{ Savith said eagerly.
Riveenata lifted her head at her dragonet's call. **A person talking
to you?** That was certainly unusual. She had thought Savith was
conversing with a dragon.
}:Yes. She is very nice and you should meet her. She is just outside.**
A hears-all, and a new one it sounded like. It was worth putting down
the study hides for. So Riveenata set aside her hides and wandered
outside, looking for Savith. There was her lifemate, talking to a girl
she didn't recognize.
"Hello there. I hope Savith hasn't been disturbing you," she greeted
when she arrived.
}:Wasn't.:{ the green said forcefully.
"Oh, she wasn't." Lanniya rose to her feet and offered her hand. "She
was just asking questions. I didn't mind at all. I'm Lanniya."
"Nice to meet you, Lanniya." Riven gave her a broad smile. "My name is
Riveenata, call me Riven. How's the Weyr treating you so far?"
"Oh, it's wonderful. I love it here." Lanniya's smile was sparkling.
"So what's it like? Impressing?" She looked eager, hopeful.
"It's spectacular," Riven said after a moment. "It was everything I
imagined and more. I hadn't been expecting it, so it was wonderful for
it to have actually happened."
"And being bonded with a green? Is it as wonderful as it seems to be?"
Lanniya's eyes betrayed her hope for her own Impression as she turned
to Savith. "I mean, I talk to them, but I'm not bonded with them. I'm
sure it's different."
"Savith was very..." She hesitated, looking for the words.
"Overwhelming. She found my mind and didn't want to let go. It was
like I had always been only part of a person, and then suddenly I
realized what I was missing."
}:Riders are very brave to be alone for so long.:{ Savith told them both.
Lanniya let go a longing sigh. "It sounds too wonderful to believe
whenever I hear someone say that. Everyone says pretty much the same
thing, you know. That it was like they found something they didn't
even know they were missing." Her eyes were wistful. "I can only
hope."
"I thought it was strange too, that all of the answers were the same."
She'd wondered why it couldn't be explained to her more clearly. "But
I think you'll do well. You do have an advantage."
"Well, I don't know about that. Briata never Impressed, so I guess
there's a chance I won't. " She looked at Savith wistfully. " But I
want it more than anything. It's one thing to be able to talk to them,
but another to be bonded, I'm sure."
The Healer wished she could help, and she cast through her memory. "I
don't recall Briata actually Standing," Riven said after a moment. "If
you're out there on the Sands, wanting it, I can't imagine that you'd
fail."
"Really?" That surprised her. "Why wouldn't she want to? I
mean...well...of course you can't answer that." She tilted her head.
"Do you mind? Me talking to Savith, I mean?"
"Some people just don't want to Stand. Flying Thread can be
terrifying. I gave it up for a bit - but that was out of despair." it
was easier to admit that, now. When it was Turns later and she'd
turned out to be dragonrider material after all.
}:She is interesting. I would like to keep talking.:{ Savith declared.
Then she tilted her head to eye her rider. }:But you are and will
always be mine.:{
Riven chuckled at the last. "She has enough exuberance to talk to at
least the both of us."
"Then we have a bunch in common! I can talk her head knobs off"
