Saibra

Saibra

Saibra's lips were curved into a pleasant smile as she stepped out
onto the sunlight of her ledge and inhaled the salty sea air. The
glint of the sun off the water made the ocean look like a sparkling
jewel. She leaned back into the comforting embrace of a man's chest as
strong arms slid around her. Large, calloused hands came to rest on
either side of her rounded belly.

A kick from inside the belly greeted the man's hand and his rich
baritone chuckled in Saibra's ear, "Another boy, methinks."

The goldrider rolled her eyes, but couldn't quite keep the smile from
her lips, "Don't let Saidrene hear you say that. She's sensitive about
it as it is."

"Maybe I will take her out after Threadfall? Just some father daughter
time. Maybe fishing." There was a smile in the brownrider's voice.

Saibra put her hands over his, "I think that would be nice."

"Sayafel, for a boy, and Kaiffra for a girl?" His voice asked.

She wrinkled her nose, "And that is why I named our first two children."

K'fel's voice chuckled in her ear, she could feel it vibrate down his
chest, against her back,"I will win one some day."

Saibra turned in his arms, wrapping her own about his neck as she
pulled him down for a kiss, "Some day." She promised with a smile into
his eyes, "Be careful out there, hm?"

In true arrogant fashion K'fel merely grinned, "Me? This brownrider
will always come home, Saibra. He has a short-tempered weyrmate who
would be lost without him."

Even though there was a tease to his voice, Saibra's was serious,
"That's right. So you had better come home." She pinched his arm.

"We go through this every time, my heart." He cupped her face in his
chin, "I will be back before you know it, hm?" He pressed a kiss to
her lips and then drew back, "I have to go."

Saibra's heart twisted as she watched him turn toward his waiting
brown, "K'fel!" She called, and he turned, "I love you."

K'fel gave her that smile that made her stomach flutter, it reached
all the way to his handsome eyes, "I love you too, kid."

She laughed and shook her head. It was always the same response. As he
climbed aboard his brown and headed down to the practice fields to
join up with the rest of the Wing, Saibra turned and went back into
their Weyr. Being six months pregnant left her grounded during 'Fall,
and during this pregnancy she had found herself uncommonly squimesh to
blood and other things, which left her out of the dragonhealer
infirmary.

Kaibren and Saidrene were with their foster mother so Saibra headed
down to the Dining Cavern. Despite the look K'fel always gave her, she
liked to have a bit of klah. It helped calm her stomach, she would
tell him. As soon as she sat down a drudge brought her the cup, and
she smiled the woman away.

}:The Wings leave.:{ Chioneth told her, bugling a farewell to her brown mate.

Saibra exhaled a little sigh. She was hardly ever nervous when she was
in Threadfall as well, she supposed it was because she had no time for
it. But when she was left back behind on the ground she remained
skittish the entire time K'fel was gone.

"Mmmm, maybe we can keep ourselves busy while the Wings are gone?" A
voice purred in her ear, and she rolled her eyes. It was the same
incessant bronzerider that had plagued her since they graduated
together in Chioneth's class. He was handsome, and the only reason he
was grounded was because of his dragon's wing injury that kept the
bronze from being able to participate in a full fighting Wing.

"Get lost M'yar. You know I have a weyrmate."

"That has never stopped dragonriders before." M'yar responded with a
winning smile.

Saibra shot him a got glare, "I said get lost."

The man's confidence seemed to wither on the spot and he pushed away
from the table, muttering about stuck-up goldriders as he went.

}:There is trouble.:{ Chioneth's voice was full of warning. }:Keavath
is returning.:{

Saibra shot up from the table, one hand pressed automatically to her
stomach as she hurried outside into the Weyrbowl. Her stomach did a
twist as her heart flew into her throat. Keaveth was bloodied, ichor
oozing from many scores. The urge to vomit nearly overcame her as she
looked with horrified eyes to the mangled figure that still clung to
his neckridge. It wasn't even recognizable as a man.

**K'fel!** She wanted to scream but her voice was stuck in her throat.

Somehow she could make out his face, and as the pair drew closer,
falling to the ground at alarming speed, the face changed from that of
her beloved K'fel, to another brownrider who had been dear to her-
Z'an. Hot tears scalded her eyes, but the face changed again, this
time becoming that of R'enh. Her heart pounded a hard staccato in her
ears.

As the broken figure of the dragon and rider slammed into the ground
with a sickening thud and dragon keens blared in her ears, she bolted
upright and gasped...

Saibra panted, her body soaked in sweat as her eyes darted about her
dark weyr. She had not had that dream in a while. They had finally
stopped when she moved to Dolphin Cove.

Grabbing a thick robe she walked out onto Chioneth's ledge, and
shivered against the frigid cold. The air helped her wake-up, but the
effects of the dream still left her shaken on the inside. What she
hated about the dream was how jarringly accurate and detailed it was,
as if she were reliving the memory itself, right up until the faces
morphed. That was new. Before it had always been K'fel's face up until
the very end.

She swallowed against the thick knot in the base of her throat as
tears came unbidden to her eyes. Her life had changed so drastically
since that day. She'd lost the baby and K'fel in that same day as she
went into premature labor. The only thing at all that had kept her
sane was two sets of little eyes that depended on her to get them
through the death of their father. Saidrene and Kaibren.

}:It is a memory from long ago.:{ Chioneth's voice was soothing in her
mind as the Queen moved out onto the ledge, curling one golden wing
around to shield Saibra from the icy wind. The gold could not remember
Keavath on her own, but only through Saibra's dreams and memories.

Saibra buried her face against her lifemate's warm, soft hide and
sobbed. Her heart had never been the same since. She had never loved
anyone the way that she had K'fel. When he died, her heart had gone
with it.
