Description: Genna meets the Weyrwoman for the first time and feels a little silly.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 7, day 28 of Turn 7
Genna knew it probably wouldn't be long before she got to meet the new
Weyrwoman, but she was curious nonetheless. This woman was, after all,
going to be her direct superior once she graduated. And she wanted to
make a good impression. So when she spotted the light gold of
Chioneth's hide after bath-time with Lissath, she decided it was time
to go introduce herself. With her own young gold waddling close behind
her, just as curious as her Lifemate, Genna made her way over to where
Saibra and Chioneth were standing.
"Excuse me, Ma'am, do you have a moment?"
Although Saibra had not had a formal meeting with Genna yet, she had
been watching and observing the young gold pair from afar. She had
been disturbed when she had talked to J'darin and heard some of what
was taking place in the junior Weyrling class. Chioneth would be
making heads spin if Saibra heard word of a dragonet ever attacking
another human ever again. There had to be something deranged about
that green dragonet to begin with to even consider such a thing.
Dragons did not fight one another and they certainly didn't attack
humans. Atleast, not if they had a gold Queen enforcing the proper
etiquette. Saibra chalked it up to one of Hygalia's failings as a
Weyrwoman.
"Yes, Genna, isn't it? Well met." Saibra smiled politely.
Chioneth broke away from her conversation with an incorrigible blue
named Jayth to look over at the young gold dragonet, }:Good evening
Lissath. How was your bath?:{
"Well met, Ma'am, and welcome to Dragonsfall," Genna smiled politely.
"I was just thinking I should come introduce myself to you when I saw
you and Chioneth out bathing as well."
Saibra smiled at the welcome, and then tilted her head a little, "Tell
me about yourself, Genna. I mean, it's the Weyr so I have of course
heard things from other people, but I would like to know about you,
from you."
"Well, what's to tell," Genna shrugged, suddenly just a little shy. "I
was born and raised at Amber Hills Hold. My father's a Master Jeweler
there. I came her just before last hatching and impressed Lissath my
first time on the Sands." She paused, looking at Saibra. "What about
you, Ma'am? You came from Dolphin Cove Weyr, right?"
"Yes, although I was only there for less than a Turn, my actual home
is Far Island. I go from an Island, to a Cove, to the pit of an icebox
on some mountain." Saibra flashed a little grin at Genna, "But I am
slowly getting use to things here. I have resigned myself to the fact
that bulky sweaters and thick riding breeches are going to be apart of
me for the unforeseeable future."
"Oh, but don't forget the scarves and the mittens and..." Genna
trailed off, her eyes alight with enthusiasm. "There is so much to be
done with an outfit in a cold climate. I'm sure you will grow to love
it."
"There is so much you can do with an outfit when you can show some
skin too." Saibra promised, the corners of her mouth twitching as she
shoved her hands into the pockets of the jacket she was wearing.
"Ah yes, I supposed it will take me a bit of time before I feel
entirely comfortable in showing skin," Genna smiled. "Probably a good
thing I impressed Lissath here and not somewhere hot."
Saibra nodded her head slowly, "Yes, if you are concerned about
showing skin then Dragonsfall is the perfect place for you." She
agreed, but did not add that Dragonsfall was also the place for people
who were not interested in having a good time, as she certainly hadn't
seen any of that happening. It disconcerted Saibra by how many of the
dragonriders, and those in leadership positions, were holdbred. Of
course, it wasn't something she could mention in front of Genna who
was also holdbred.
"At least they have a winter lake here that is kept rather warm. I had
never heard of such until I came here."
"Oh it's lovely, isn't it?" Genna replied enthusiastically. "Can you
imagine washing dragons out in the cold? I think you'd be in constant
danger of hypothermia." She paused a moment, thinking. "Actually, can
a dragon catch a cold?"
The question made Saibra wonder when the Junior Weyrlings would be
covering dragon anatomy and habits of their lifemates, "No, or they
would have colds often wouldn't they? It is not as noticeable in a
cold place like Dragonsfall, but take Dolphin Cove for example. The
dragons have to come out of the hot, muggy air and into the cold,
frigid depths of /between/ regularly. It can make the riders sick if
they are not clothed properly, depending on how long they are going
/between/, but the dragons are fine. They have thick hides."
"Ahh yes, /between/," Genna blushed heavily, feeling quite stupid at
making such a mistake in front of the new Weyrwoman, out of all
people! Lissath would have her hide for this later. "How would you
clothe for it, if you're somewhere really hot though?" she asked,
hoping to distract Saibra with a more intelligent question.
}: Yours will have to excuse my Genna. She can be quite stupid at
times. :{ Lissath sighed at Chioneth in despair, as if that made
everything better.
"That is what your riding jacket is for," Saibra explained, "and why
you will rarely see dragonriders without it, even in the warmest of
places. It's usually enough to keep off the chill of /between/ and you
can hook it to your riding straps as soon as you come back out of
/between/." The Weyrwoman explained, although with the chilly
temperatures at Dragonsfall, Saibra couldn't imagine ever _not_
needing her riding jacket.
}:She will learn.:{ Chioneth replied.
"But I bet during Fall you will just have to cope with the heat?"
Genna asked. She couldn't see riders taking the time to put their
jackets on and off every time they had to go /between/ in Fall.
}: Will she learn from Yours as well? :{
"You always wear your jacket in 'Fall. It provides protection against
ash and to Thread." Saibra explained, and then confessed, "I don't
know about other riders but there is usually so much adrenaline
flowing during Threadfall that I rarely even have a moment to note
weather I am hot, or cold. It is usually not until the 'Fall is over
that I think, Dear Faranth, I am a sweaty mess." She grinned a little
at Genna, "And then I rush back to my bathing pool."
}:Yes.:{ Chioneth replied. She could not remember specific names, but
she knew that her rider had worked with other young goldriders before.
Genna laughed a little, feeling a little more at ease now. "That's good to
know. I'm sure I'll be fine then," she smiled.
}: Good. She seems smart. :{ Lissath decided she liked the older gold and
her rider. }: Will you teach me? :{
}: You will learn from many older dragons and yes, me too.:{ Chioneth
informed the inquisitive young gold.
"Yes, I am sure you will." Saibra agreed.
