Rumors, terrible rumors were echoing through the halls of Sunstone
Seahold. They had soon reached Parme's little cot and left her reeling
with surprise. Some stories told her their Lord Holder had been lost
at sea. Others told that he had been brutally murdered in his
quarters. Parme knew not to trust rumors, but the sheer quantity of
these ludicrous stories had her on edge. She needed to hear for
herself what was what. So she sought out Bryvin.
Bryvin was coming out of his office when he saw Parme. "Hello?" He
looked around and no drudges were in the hallway.
"Bryvin," Parme nodded seriously, cutting right to the chase. "I've
heard such terrible stories, please tell me our Lord Holder is in good
health."
He lowered his eyes and shook his head. "I'm very sorry Parme, I
can't. His ship was caught in a squall and broken on the rocks down
the coast. The searchers retrieved his body. Unfortunately the healers
were unable to do anything for him."
Parme fell suddenly silent, her expression blank as she dealt with the
news internally. She didn't know much of their Lord Holder personally,
but this was still a tragedy of unfathomable magnitude. For all of
them. Finally she spoke up. "That's terrible, is there anything I can
do to help?"
Bryvin took a deep breath considering the woman. There was much about
their former Lord that wasn't generally known and he couldn't publicly
acknowledge. "Just reach out to people you know are taking it poorly
and see what you can do to help them Parme."
"I will," Parme nodded. "Who will be taking charge in the meanwhile?
And what will happen to the Hold in the long run?" Sunstone Seahold
had come into existence thanks to Morin, but that didnīt mean it
should end with him, right?
"I'll make sure things keep running until the Conclave selects a
successor." He smiled gentle reassurance and the woman. "It will be
alright. I'm sure they'll send us someone who can take over." He
patted her on the shoulder. This wasn't the first time he'd done the
reassurance speech.
"Yes, of course they would. Sunstone fairs well, who wouldn't want to
take over," Parme said, more to herself than to Bryvin. "I just hope
it will be someone who'll do us good."
"I'm certain they will Parme," he nodded. "Sunstone will be just fine
even though we will miss our Lord Morin."
"We will. But you are right, it's the people that make the Hold and
we've got plenty of wonderful people here."
"That we do," he nodded. "When out new Lord is named I'm certain it
will be someone we can trust to have the good of the Hold at heart."
He gave a heavy sigh. "So sad about Lord Morin though."
"So very sad," Parme agreed, bowing her head for a moment. "Will there
be a ceremony?"
"Yes," he nodded. "I'm arranging something so that when the new Lord
comes I can present it to him. What do you think about a large plaque
with his likeness in the square?"
"Thank you, that would be lovely," Parme nodded. "Then maybe the people who knew
him can say a few words and so. It would give everyone a chance to
come to terms with the tragedy and the changes at hand."
"No thank _you_ Parme," he said with warmth and sincerity and reached
out to take her hand. "I'm sure Lord Morin would have appreciated your
sincere concern. As do I."
"This is my home," Parme said with a slight shrug. How could she not
care? "I'll make some rounds through the Hold then, see if I can clear
up some of the nastier rumours and comfort those affected."
"I appreciate that Parme," Bryvin smiled sadly. "I am sorry but I have
to meet with the Guard Captain, so I'll bid you good day. But please
do bring any other issues you may hear about to us here."
With that he patted her shoulder and walked away.
