Kapera

Kapera had visited River Bluff before to pay tribute to other goldriders,
but her last visit had been several Turns ago when she was still at
Dragonsfall. As Riyanth spiraled down to find a landing point, she found
herself hesitant, truth be told. Rhosyn was reputed to be a strong
personality - as goldriders had to be. While she seemed to get along all
right with the Dolphin Cove goldriders, she was worried Rhosyn would hate
her, and there'd be an incident.

**At least you're not Weyrwoman anymore.** Two senior Weyrwomen hating each
other was far worse than dislike between a Weyrwoman and a junior goldrider,
especially ones at different Weyrs. One could be ameliorated by careful
avoidance, and one could not. }:Orlaith, my rider and I have come to visit
you,:{ Riyanth sent to the senior queen of the Weyr.

The gold's head came up from where she had been standing close to the
dragonhealers' area. At the moment she was assisting with careful removal of
a damaged wingsail. The green was under fellis but just in case, the queen
was there to guarantee everything went well if she woke. Her rider was also
there. }:We have visitors. Riyanth has come:{ Her tone was surprised.

Rhosyn also registered surprise. She didn't get many golds from other Weyrs
here except perhaps at Hatchings. **Riyanth...** She was trying to place the
name and it finally dawned. **She was from Dragonsfall but there was a
problem. So she knows N'vanik.** At that, a bit of a sour taste was in her
mouth but she tried not to linger on it. When things like that happened-a
gold leaving their Weyr-people talked. Remembering details, Rhosyn told
Orlaith to let her know she would meet her in her weyr shortly. It would
take the woman some time to get landed and find it anyway.

**Why is she here?**
}:Seems she has newly settled at Dolphin Cove:{ Orlaith said with curiosity.
**Why there? They already have three golds. We could have used her here.**
Of course. N'vanik was there. She would have gone to the familiar. Frowning,
Rhosyn began to wonder if there had been something else there. Had it just
been Traelyn? Trying to finish what she was doing so the others could take
over, she went back to her work.

}:Riyanth, we are finishing some work with the dragonhealers. If yours will
wait in our weyr, my rider will be along in a bit:{

}:Understood.:{ Riyanth set back, settling herself to sun.

Kapera shucked her jacket so that the heat wouldn't overwhelm her, glad that
Dolphin Cove and River Bluff were similar enough that clothes for one worked
reasonably at another. She sought directions from a passing caverns worker,
but didn't ask for refreshments along the way, not wanting to seem demanding.
She settled outside the Weyrwoman's weyr to wait.

When the task was done, Orlaith left the dragonhealer area and went towards
her usual spot on the Rim, overseeing the Weyr from that vantage point. Her
eyes caught Riyanth's hide, but she didn't go to her. Instead, the gold was
listening in to her rider's thoughts, which were taking some turns.

Cleaning herself up as best she could, Rhosyn went back to her weyr after
asking a drudge for drinks and sandwiches to be brought. Never let it be
said that she wasn't hospitable. Coming to the door, she saw who she assumed
was Kapera by the knots. "Welcome to River Bluff. Come on inside..Should be
some food coming." She opened the door and led the other rider into her weyr,
stopping when they came to her sitting area. Rhosyn took a chair and gestured
for her to as well. She wanted to ask what the purpose of the visit was for,
but she leaned back, smiling, and waited for Kapera to tell it herself.

"I wanted to stop by and get to know you," Kapera said after she was
seated. "Thank you for your hospitality, by the way."

"Never let it be said that I didn't feed you." Indeed, she took that
seriously. "Get to know me? Hm. I'm not really one to talk about myself usually so...I
suppose if you want to do that, I'll let you ask the questions." Rhosyn was actually
curious about the rider before her, but she didn't make a move. No, she would let Kapera
reveal herself.

"I figure it's a good idea for the Southern goldriders to know each
other. And while I'm sure I could have met you at one of the upcoming
Hatchings, I think I'd prefer a less formal setting," she said.

"How is it getting used to such a warm place? I know Dolphin Cove's
been interesting in that regard, and you're very lucky technologically."

"Well I came from Vista Point which is warm as well, though it's not
quite as bad as this. Frankly, I'm hot all the time which everyone knows.
Which is also why I probably wear the same amount of clothing as most
of the people at Dolphin Cove." She didn't care if people thought she was
slutty. At least she wasn't sweating all over the place. "But yes, I am very
thankful for the electricity and the bathing setups here. It would be hard
getting used to something else now I think."

"I must admit that I'm looking forward to the Technicians project to
improve the Cove. It'll take time, but it's going to be interesting to
see how it works. I will admit to missing lights that aren't glows."

"Oh it'll take awhile apparently from what the folks that run the dam here
say." Rhosyn didn't really talk with them much unless there was something
that needed ordered to fix something or other. They dealt with the
Headwoman. "Certainly, though, it'll make Dolphin Cove more desirable and easier to
live in." Which was another reason why she didn't understand why Kapera went there.

"The view doesn't hurt," Kapera said with a bit of a laugh.

She nibbled a bit on a sandwich before broaching another topic. "Does it
feel great, being back in the air?"

"I think, to a point, it makes me feel like I'm getting back to normal." To
Rhosyn a baby had been a huge life disruption, and not in a good way. "Plus I like
the freedom, not being stuck here at the Weyr all the time. Although my view here off the
cliffs isn't so bad either."

"I understand completely, the feeling of just being trapped. Anyone who
thinks being a goldrider is all rosy clearly hasn't been stuck for six
sevendays."

"Oh..I wasn't down for a Hatching...I was pregnant. Orlaith was gravid
at one point during the time though but then I was stuck because of the baby. So I
was just stuck." She frowned, glad that was over. Rhosyn enjoyed flying in the queens
wing and if she hadn't Impressed gold, she would have been just as happy in the fighting
wings. "But now she's with her fosterparents, I'm flying again, and I can go
get my favorite fish whenever I feel like it. Took awhile to get back in the swing of things
though."

Rhosyn frowned just slightly, indicating life still wasn't really back
to normal, but it was better than being pregnant.

"That sounds like a good situation all around. I wish you and your
daughter the best." Kapera was pretty sure that was the polite thing
to say.

"Thanks. I trust you don't have children then?" She smiled, indicating it
was okay. "I didn't either, till now. She's my first." And of course she had done it
for all the wrong reasons. "Then again, I sort of content myself with the fact that I'm doing
my part for more candidates and passing down the blood and maybe grandchildren and all
that. The Weyr needs folk in a Pass."

"None for me," Kapera confirmed. She couldn't imagine wanting one for
herself, but she respected that others made the choice.

"Indeed, dragonrider progeny are critical for the future." It was easier
to have them as a man, but such was life. "I'm sure she'll do something
amazing."

Rhosyn shrugged. "Even if she doesn't, I can content myself with the fact
that there is a little part of me that is going to keep going after I'm gone.
Just like Orlaith feels with her eggs."

Kapera had heard some nasty rumors about Rhosyn, but so far she seemed
no-nonsense and sensible. She had a feeling the other woman would be the
kind of goldrider she wouldn't try to avoid at events, unlike some of the
Windswept ones.

"I think that's a lovely sentiment, and maybe I can meet her sometime."
she said.

"Maybe so. She's rather young yet but I have the idea that once she's older
Briata will be taking her to Dolphin Cove since N'vanik will want to see her."
Rhosyn didn't know if Kapera knew that bit of information but she didn't
hide the fact and everyone else did.

"She'll get to see different places at an early age. That's something to
admire. The advantage of weyrbred children is a bigger family than just
one father, one mother."

Having been fostered at the Weyr, but longing for her real parents, Rhosyn
didn't contradict Kapera's notions openly. Sometimes one set of parents was
better. When your parents were riders in a Pass, though, things were
different. "We'll see just how she turns out when she gets older."
