Kapera

Kapera

Meledei had arrived to drills all ready and suited up. Her helmet and
goggles hid the worst of her bruising, but it certainly didn't_feel_
good. Although it irritated her at every move, Meledei was just going
to have to deal with it for she couldn't go through drills and certainly
not through Threadfall without them. Afterward, she was so very glad
when she'd made it back to her weyr and was able to remove them, though
not without pain.

It was embarrassing, to say the least, the mark that had been left upon
her face. If she had received it thanks to a heroic act, she could wear
something like that with pride. To have received it the way she had,
however, made her want to hide it. Meledei generally wore her hair
back, but though she wasn't generally vain, she took down her hair and
combed it over in an effort to veil the coloured skin from view. It
wasn't perfect, but it would have to do.

The records room was pretty quite. Cyradis wasn't there, which didn't
surprise her, but Kapera hadn't arrived. The Weyrwoman seemed to do
most of her work in her weyr those days, in an effort to protect the
child she carried. Kapera, as Weyrwoman second, had her work cut out
for her already, walking into that situation. It meant that she didn't
spend as much time in the room as she might have other wise, and neither
of them were required to do all their work there anyway. Meledei was
known to take hers to her weyr or outside, only to return when she
needed to file things away. That was only if she didn't have t access
other records - or when she was trying to avoid her injury being seen by
the entire weyr. It was toward the end of the day before the newest
goldrider appeared while Meledei was finishing up the last of her
assigned work load for the day.

"Evening, Meledei," Kapera said absently as she walked in. "Do you have
the copy of the healer's -" She stopped and looked over. "Are you
alright?"

"I'm fine. The healer's report on the riders that were injured last
fall?" At
least, that's what Meledei assumed she wanted. She remained bent over her
work,
casting only a side glance at Kapera and keep that bruise hidden. "I
already filed
it with the others."

"Ah, good. Meanwhile, I've got the approvals for who's ready to leave our
wing and head back to the main ones."

"Oh, okay. I can pull it for you." Meledei pushed away from the table
and turned
to the shelve that housed the files Kapera needed. She plucked one from
among them
and then passed it over, trying to keep her hair over her one side of her
face.

"Thank you." She watched Meledei, a little puzzled, but she didn't want to
push too hard. "Do you think N'dorn pushed himself too hard in drills
today? I know he wants back into Cyclone, but his sack tossing is still
weak."

"I'd say go with your gut. It's better to be safe than sorry and you
don't want to
mess with Thread." If someone want back too soon, they'd be more likely
to make a
mistake which could cost them their life - or the lives of others. Meledei
enscripted another note on the hide she was working on. "That's it for me.
Anything you need before I head out?"

"I don't think so. Nothing that can't wait till tomorrow, anyway." She
tilted her head to watch Meledei a little more carefully.

"All right. Well, I'll see you later then." Meledei managed a half smile
before
disappearing through the door. From within the records room, another face
peeked
out, an apprentice harper by knots, parchment in hand, evidently to have
retrieved
something to bring it to someone else. She eyed the retreating figure and
frowned,
then shook her head.

Kapera peered after her, then looked over at the harper. She shouldn't
ask...she shouldn't invade...

"Do you know what's up?"

And there she'd blurted it out.

The girl glanced between the door and the goldrider, as if weighing the
option
between answering the question and just fleeing. Eventually, she opted
for the
first choice. "A guy hit her."

The goldrider's eyes widened, wondering who would dare do that. If she'd
been badly treated, wouldn't Elleth have thrown a fit? "And she doesn't
want to talk about it?"

"I guess not. From what I understand, it was that new artist." Now that the
goldrider seemed willing to listen, the harper apprentice was a bit more
open. She
stepped forward, parchment in hand. "I bet she's embarrassed. I gotta
go, my
Master wants this."

"I see." Actually, Kapera didn't, but she didn't want to keep the
apprentice waiting. "Go ahead."

Without another word, the apprentice scrambled out the door.
