Kapera

Kapera

J'nus knocked on Kapera's door a candlemark and a half past sunrise, a jug of klah in one hand and a plate of fruit and pastries in the other. Experience had taught him that she was best approached with edible gifts in the morning.

Kapera muttered and rolled over in bed. **unwanna.**

}:Kopth's is here,:{ Riyanth supplied gently.

**Oh.** She sat up and rubbed the sleep from her eyes, then searched for a wrap to put around herself. Somehow, answering the door naked didn't seem like the best idea. She found a silky shift of forest green and slipped it on, figuring it was decency enough. Her hair was hanging everywhere, but that couldn't be helped.

"Good morning," she said when she opened the door.

Shells, she was beautiful. J'nus held up the klah and plate. "I brought breakfast."

"You are a gift from the First Egg," she said, gesturing him into the room. It had changed a bit since the last time he was here; Meledei's painting was displayed on a shelf, and she'd gotten a covering for the table. "How is settling in going?"

"Terribly. I have far too many belongings." He slid the tray onto the table and looked for mugs for klah. "You look like you're doing well though. Is the painting new?"

"It is! Meledei brought it for me when she greeted me. She's very nice, I think I'll like working with her."

Meledei... she was the young goldrider. J'nus spotted a pair of mugs on a shelf, and poured them both klah after checking to make sure that they were clean. "That's good to hear. I haven't actually met her yet. What about Cyradris and Saibra? What are they like?"

"It's going alright so far. I think they might think I'm here to take over," she said after a moment.

Goldriders. J'nus shook his head as he sipped his klah. "Unless Panitath fails to rise, Cyradis doesn't have a thing to worry about. Do you have plans?"

She shrugged half-heartedly. "I don't know how to reassure them that all I want is to be useful." It was as much as she was good for, broken as she was. "Not really," she added.

"Give it time. You're new, and they don't know what to make of you yet. But they'll learn what you're made of soon enough."

"Thanks." She appreciated his encouragement. "You ever wanted to ride...I dunno, a brown or something?" Maybe being a greenrider would have involved less tension, fear of others betraying you.

Outside, Riyanth let out a low grumbling sound.

J'nus laughed. "No. Kopth's hide's gotten me out of more scrapes than I care to remember. But it would have been... simpler." And being passed over for promotions for younger, more charismatic men. He'd led a Wing once, and almost as soon as he'd earned the knots he'd been stripped of them for someone more 'promising'.

She nodded in understanding, then occupied herself with a pastry for a moment. "So, where to?"

"It's early enough to go down the beach without melting, or we could investigate the store rooms in the Lower Caverns. I've got a good idea what to look for to build a fan," he said.

Indecision stayed her words for a moment. Her mind filled with tantalizing images - seeing him shirtless again, wearing the tiniest swimwear to show off herself - but what impression would she give? She knew she'd had an airhead reputation, and she wanted to be taken seriously here. Plunging right back into her old ways...wasn't the way to do that.

"Store rooms," she said, and hoped her tone was even.

J'nus nodded, slightly disappointed but not surprised. "I don't know how you're doing, but the change from Dragonsfall to here is taking some time to get used to. I'd forgotten what it's like to be too hot."

"Windswept lives up to it's name - there are more breezes, there," she told him. "I don't miss feeling like I'm freezing to death, but it seems like the air is a little more stagnant when it's not raining. I wonder if it's better on the seaside weyrs?"

"Maybe." The bronzerider selected a pastry studded with bits of apple. "I wouldn't give up my view of the land for an extra breeze or two, though. And I hear that the seaside weyrs are more prone to flooding when there are hurricanes."

Absently she licked the crumbs from her fingers. "You don't think the ocean's wildness is a good view? And right...those are a thing." She felt a mix of worry and interest at the idea of such a violent storm.

"Sure, it's a good view. I prefer looking out over something that's alive, though. As must you," J'nus pointed his pastry at her.

"I was tempted by it," she admitted. "But I thought when Riyanth got egg-heavy, but before we moved to the sands, it wouldn't be doable."

"Why didn't you take a lower weyr?"

"I wanted to be different," she admitted with a little laugh. "Queens are always in the lower ones, you know? Being up here gives me a whole new view."

J'nus smiled. "And do you like it?"

"I think so." She gave him an honest, unguarded smile, then covered it with a gulp of klah. "I'm trying to become an optimist, you see."

"New weyr, new Kapera. Interesting." He saluted her with his mug. "Welcome to the brighter side of the mountain."

But would he still like her? And then she remembered that needing a man to like her was something she didn't want to depend on. "You must be thinking some of the same," she mused aloud, studying him as he held the mug.

"Because I chose the sunny side? Or perhaps because I like the idea of having more than one way out of my weyr." The bronzerider shrugged, not really wanting to talk about starting over. "Either way, I have a nice view."

Her lips twitched as she looked him over. "I bet it'll be nice to sit on the beach and watch the sunset and the light change the colors of the sea."

"That too." He winked. "I used to spend a lot of time on the beach. It was at Riverbluff-- I Impressed there. It's been ages since I've gone swimming in seawater, too. It'll be nice after Threadfall."

"Oh, that sounds wonderful." She sighed at the image. "Trying to tempt me away from hunting for parts?"

If only. "Help me find parts first, and maybe we'll have time for a swim later. Eat your redfruit."

"Yes, high and mighty bronzerider." Her eyes twinkled at him as she bit into the fruit as ordered.
