Description: The goldriders have a chat over cake.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 7, day 17 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Saibra, Panitath, Ikalis
Drills today had gone pretty well, Kapera thought. She'd just settled into
flying in the wing alongside Saibra and Meledei, then Saibra took the
offer at Dragonsfall. When she'd realized that with Panitath grounded with
a clutch, that meant she had to lead the wing, she'd - panicked wasn't the
word she wanted to use. Been concerned was probably a better way of
putting it. She hadn't led a wing in over a Turn, and the idea of messing
up had had her up all night before.
But - the formations had been fine. No one had fallen spectacularly out of
place. No one had cursed her name, afterwards. And now she could have klah
and a treat. Looking at the oversized piece of cake in front of her, she
considered whether or not this counted as a treat, or multiple treats.
"That looks mighty good." Meledei took the intiative to slide into a seat
across
from the new Wingsecond and stare at the hunk of cake that squatted
between them
both. "What's the flavour? And what's the occasion?"
"You want a piece? It's...something with fruit on top. I just asked the
cook for the sweetest thing she had," Kapera confessed.
"I'd hate to deprive you of ever torrid bite." Meledei giggled and leaned
to one
side, then another as she attempted to study the pastry treat from various
sides.
"So any special reason as to why such a fluffy boulder now resides on your
plate?"
Usually she only ate that many sweets when it was a celebration or she'd
had a
really bad day. She hoped it was the former rather than the later for
Kapera.
"I'm pleased I didn't have the greens all smash into each other at
changeover of the drills today."
"Really? That's it?" Meledei couldn't restrain a giggle. "I suppose
that's as
good a reason as any. But were you really worried about that?" Meledei
had been,
but Kapera was an experienced Goldrider and Meledei had been worried about
her first
time leading drills. Now it was easier, but she still didn't have the
same amount
of time under her belt as Kapera or Cyradis - not by a long shot.
"I was grounded for the last Turn," Kapera pointed out. "And something
about the air and the wind patterns of Dolphin Cove is so different from
Windswept or Dragonsfall, and I find these formations weird."
"First reason, well, you've at least had more experience before that
right? As for
the others, that I can understand." Meledei leaned over to eye the cake.
She could
smell its sweetness, even from almost across the table. Her mouth began
to water
and her tongue ran over her lips. "I think I'm going to get me a slice."
She was
generally a bubbly girl, but that didn't mean Meledei didn't have a thing
for other
sweets too.
"You should. It's amazing." Kapera took a bite and sighed. "Dolphin Cove
officially has the best bakers of any weyr."
"I'll be right back." Meledei scooted her chair back and it squealed
in protest at such treatment. She left only briefly, just long enough
to procure a piece for herself - albeit not quite the size of Kaperas.
"As to the bakers," She concurred upon her return, "I wholeheartedly
agree."
"Hopefully they'll put something else outstanding out for Cyradis'
Hatching. That shouldn't be too long now?" the other goldrider asked.
"Nope, not long at all. I know the candidates are excited." She had been
excited,
even though she'd stood so long and hadn't been chosen all those turns.
Then of
course, Elleth had chosen her, and that had made it all worth it. "It's a
shame
some have to go disappointed."
She'd never felt that, but imagined it must feel awful. "With three
clutching golds, they shouldn't wait for too long."
"It's so odd to have had that number, and for a little bit now." Before
it was just
two. Her and Traelyn. Then Janani. Then Cyradis. Saibra had come to
fill in the
ranks and she'd left, but now there was Kapera. Would she leave too?
Cyradis had
stayed longer than Janani and thus far was the most constant. Well, besides
herself. "But odd in a good way."
"I totally understand. I've been at understaffed Weyrs, and then Windswept
was crammed. Golds know when new ones are needed, but sometimes it's not
so easy to redistribute."
"Yeah." At least Saibra had left because a local Weyr needed her, and her
parting
hadn't been quite as painful. Maybe it was because she'd not been there
as long,
but she'd also handled it better - and she wasn't the Weyrwoman at Dolphin
Cove and
leaving the entire Weyr in a lurch. "So now that you've been here for a
while, how
do you like it in comparison?"
"I do like it here. You know what they say about with a dragon anything's
right there. But I still think it's amazing to just be able to walk to the
beach whenever and not have to/between/."
"And have to put on all those heavy leathers to stay warm only to burn up
once you
get there." Meledei hadn't ever had to worry about that, but she imagined
it was
annoying. "Not to mention the sand that gets in them if you have to wear
them to
the beach."
Kapera laughed. "Exactly! I think it's easier to go from warm to cold."
"You don't generally romp on the sand when it's cold." Meledei agreed, then
realised she'd hardly touched her cake. "I'd better eat this before
someone else
comes along and steals it. Think they'd let me take another piece to my
weyr?"
"Probably. Especially if you have any friends among the staff." Something
she needed to work on.
"That I do." Ikalis was one who came to mind, but there were others too.
"Want me
to get something for you too?"
"I probably have had enough, but thanks for the thought."
"Well then, I guess that means more for me!" Meledei grin, then tiptoed
toward the
kitchens in the hope of convincing someone to give her more cake.
