Kapera

Esiah had been disappointed with Saibra's departure. The portrait of
the woman had been fantastic and now it was at Dragonsfall some where.
No matter, the arrival of _another_ goldrider gave Esiah the
opportunity to paint another portrait, something he was really
beginning to relish. It was a great project that he was sure would
help his case someday in gaining Master status.

Today he swung by the goldrider's quarters and knocked on her door,
hoping to catch her in. If not he might have to call in a favor and
have a dragonrider find out where she was.

"Coming!" Kapera called. She settled the last few pins into her hair
so that it stayed up, and then pulled open the door. "Hello there,"
she said, pleased by the appearance of a handsome man.

Esiah smiled, his teeth flashing through his well trimmed beard, "Good
morning ma'am. I am Journeyman Esiah and I was wondering," he placed a
hand on the leather satchel over his shoulder, "if I could talk to you
about getting your portrait painted?"

So this was the one Jeyme'd mentioned... She'd been right. He was
handsome. "I'm Kapera, pleased to meet you. Come on in," she invited.

Once she was seated, she smiled at him. "I'd be happy to sit for one.
Is there a charge?"

Esiah seated himself across from the newest, and lovely he would add,
goldrider, "No ma'am, it is a project I am working on for the Weyr. I
have already painted the Weyrwoman and lady Meledei's portraits."

"Who else will you be doing next?" she asked curiously.

"I have my eye on the Weyrleader and I have been talking to his
weyrmate so I feel I have an 'in' on that one. We'll see. It is a lot
harder to get men to sit still for a portrait." Esiah raised his
shoulders at that.

"Are we more vain?" she asked with a laugh. She knew she felt it with
her pleasure at the thought of being painted.

"It does sound like a rather useful project, though. A way of making
our records of leadership a little more immediate.

"I think so, and wouldn't it be neat, a hundred Turns from now, for
our ancestors to know what the leaders looked like?" Esiah smiled,
showcasing his pure love history.

"Yeah. I think that would be a good thing. Especially in a Pass," she
added. "How long have you been an artist? Even before you
apprenticed?"

No one had ever asked him that, "Yes, my mother encouraged me, and my
father ignored me, so it left plenty of time for drawing." He felt he
had been lucky to be born the youngest.

"Seems like you must enjoy your work. Do you do landscapes?" she asked
suddenly. "Meledei gave me a small painting."

"Yes, actually, that was one of mine that she commissioned." Esiah was
proud of his work but even more so that Meledei had considered it good
enough to gift to someone else.

"Well, it's gorgeous. The sea was a big draw to come here, so I
appreciate seeing a reminder of it."

"Does that mean you will sit for one of my portraits then?" Esiah was
glad that all of the goldriders he had met at Dolphin Cove were
approachable, unlike the stories told about them amongst holders.

"Of course I will. It's very flattering, you know."

This made Esiah raise an eyebrow, "I didn't know, actually, but I am
very glad that if is viewed as a compliment rather than a nuisance."

"I bet the men see it as a nuisance, but I'm a vain woman who knows
how pretty she is, of course I would find it flattering." She could
admit her weaknesses.

"Who did you do work for before you came here?"

Esiah sat back, letting the strap of his satchel slide off of his
shoulder so that he could get comfortable, "Different Holds, mostly. I
stayed a few Turns at each one. Whenever the Hall would reassign me I
was more than glad to go. Stuffy Lord Holders don't really have much
interest in painters," he grinned a little, making the edges of his
blue eyes crinkle, "as you might imagine. Once I had painted a
portrait of their family, and perhaps of their land and Hold, they
were pretty much ready to see the backside of me as I left."

"Get something to flatter themselves, then be done with your services.
Sounds...rather like Lords, actually," she said with a laugh.

"Yes, I know all about Lords, which was why I was so relieved to
finally be stationed at a Weyr." A tropical one where people often got
naked, as his luck would have it.

"Well, I'm certainly happy to have you. So tell me, how would I wind
up posing for this image? Is there a specific time and place where
you'd want to do this?" She'd never thought about how sitting for art
worked, really.

"That is all up to you. I painted Cyradis and Saibra in their weyrs
and Meledei out in front of the ocean." Esiah had technically painted
Saibra in her bedroom, but he didn't think that was necessary
information.

"I don't know if I've been here long enough to have a good eye for a
place," she said honestly. "You're the one with the artist's eye,
where would you suggest?"

Esiah lifted his shoulders, "I don't have a dragon to get around, so I
am at the disadvantage of only knowing places around the Weyr that I
can walk to. Dawn or sunset would also be nice times to capture the
light as well. We could do it out by the Weyrlake, or on your ledge
overlooking the Weyrbowl. Or if you would like we could head further
out and have the entire Weyr as the backdrop."

She considered his ideas. "I like the idea of the weyr as the backdrop,"
she confessed. "And sunset sounds lovely." She wans't sure anything could
drag her up before dawn.

"Sunset it is. What day works best for you?" He was sure a goldrider had more
important things on her schedule than he did.

She closed her eyes for a moment, envisioning her schedule. "What about
the 26th?" Drills would be over and there weren't any scheduled extra
meetings that she knew about.

Esiah stood, "The 26th at sunset," he smiled and inclined his head, "I
shall see you then milady."

"I look forward to it," she said, standing as well to escort him out.
