Description: The climate at Dolphin Cove Weyr means that J'nus has some adjusting to do
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 7, day 19 of Turn 7
J'nus had been at Dolphin Cove Weyr for less than a day, and already knew that he had a problem.
Sweat.
It was _hot_. Outside, the air shimmered above the beach and green treetops. The light was a clear, bright white that stripped the shadows and baked the stone of the Weyr. Kopth loved it, of course, and J'nus knew that he would as well, in time. He'd loved the heat when he was younger. But after turns at Dragonsfall, it felt foreign.
The bedfurs had to go. As did his riding leathers, the bronzerider decided. They'd be fine for Threadfall, but drilling in the thick leather would give him a heart attack. He needed something thinner, and the quickest way to find new flight leathers was to talk to the Headwoman.
The Headwoman's office was in the lower part of the Weyr, near to the store rooms and within a short walk of the laundry and kitchen. He had to ask for directions but found her office with little trouble, and knocked on the door.
At the knock on the door, Chaysea quickly buttoned up the two top buttons on her blouse that she had undone earlier to try and get a little relief from the heat. She was glad that L'pin had taught her how to swim and that Saibra had helped her find a semi-modest swimsuit because she was seriously considering a swim later to help cool off.
"Come in!" She called, sitting a little straighter in her chair.
"Hello?" J'nus stuck his head around the door and smiled when he saw the woman behind the desk. "Hello again, Chaysea."
Chaysea stood, "Hello J'nus." She motioned for him to take a seat as she returned to her own, "What brings you to me today?"
J'nus settled into the chair she'd offered and leaned back comfortably. It was cooler down here, but still not comfortable. And tidy. The Headwoman kept her desk clean and her files organized and out of sight. "I just transfered from Dragonsfall and I need a few... provisions. Namely sheets instead of furs and a lighter set of riding leathers, until I can make my own."
"Out of the freezer and into the oven." Chaysea remarked with a smile, "Yes, I can help you out with that. Come on, I will show you what we have to offer as far as the riding leathers go. I am afraid you would know more about picking those out than I, but the sheets I can handle." She stood and led the way out of her office, "Is there anything else your weyr needs?"
"An extra bookshelf or two, if you have them." The bronzerider smiled a little sheepishly. "I have a bit of a collection." And books were the least of it.
"Extra bookshelves, you got it. I'll have a couple of Weyrlings bring that up for you. They just love it when I assign them heavy lifting chores," she winked conspiratorially as she opened up the supply closet where most of the clothing and dragonrider supplies were kept. Flicking open the shutter on the basket of glows inside, Chaysea motioned to the left, "Over there you will find boots, riding leathers, breeches, tunics, you name it. Take what you need. I'll get the sheets."
"Thank you, Headwoman." Sheets would be glorious. He might actually sleep through the night. In the mean time, J'nus began to thumb through the piles of clothing. A pair of short sleeved linen shirts got thrown over his arm, as did a pair of light brown breeches that had a drawstring. The riding leathers, however, took a little more time. The bronzerider narrowed it down to two pairs of dark brown pants and three jackets. "Chaysea? May I get your opinion?"
Chaysea emerged from the other corner of the storage room with a couple of sheets under one arm and a thin, cotton blanket under the other, "Sure."
"Which one fits best?" The bronzerider slipped his arms into the first jacket, this one a light tan with a stripe down each arm. "Item one."
The Headwoman smiled and pretended to study the man, "Okay, next?"
J'nus took off the first jacket and put on a second, this one dyed a brownish green. "I'm not sure that it fits right through the shoulders," he said, turning around. "Are the shoulder seams straight in the back, or are they bunching? I can't tell if I'm imagining things because it doesn't fit like my old jacket."
Chaysea wrinkled her nose at this and shook her head, "It is bunching a little, but more than that, the color is...." She trailed off and shook her head, meeting J'nus's eyes with a concealed laugh, "Let's just say the light tan was much more flattering."
"Hmm." Too bad. J'nus took the second jacket off and slipped into the third, this one a plain brown. "Again, I'm not sure about the shoulders."
The Headwoman's brows furrowed a bit as she stepped forward and ran her hands along the man's shoulders, feeling for any ripples in the jacket, "I think this one fits fine, like a glove really. Now it is up to your preference."
"Hmm." J'nus switched jackets, putting the first tan jacket back on and flexing his shoulders. It pulled a bit, but so did the other one. He'd really just have to make his own, or, more likely, commission one from one of the Weyr's Crafters. But in the mean time... "I think I'll take this one," he said. The tan would do better in the hot sun.
"Excellent choice." Chaysea agreed as she also handed over his new bed linens, "I think that is everything we came for?"
J'nus accepted them with a smile. "That would indeed be it. Thank you for your time, and your excellent judgement."
"You are certainly welcome. Coe see me any time you need something."
