Ninaine

Ninaine paled at the plaintive cry of her green and she swallowed
roughly as she closed her eyes. **Luneth, we have to do this. One day
you'll be too big to be inside and I can't sleep outside. You'll still
be able to hear me and talk to me. **

Luneth gave a soft whimper and coiled herself even tighter against the
chair. }: No no no no. I don't like it. I don't like it. :{

Ninaine's face was pained as she opened her eyes and looked at
J'darin. She didn't have to tell the man that Luneth wasn't willing.
She was sure that he'd already figured that out. "I understand." She
winced as Luneth gave a shrill whine of dismay but continued. "I
haven't had any ideas. She...she gets upset if I think about it."

J'darin was stunned, even amazed, that the little green had spoken
directly to him.

}:I heard her. I will tell her to listen to you. :{

**Nonono Hasaarth! She is terrified of you. **

}:She should be, I am her wingleader. She should obey. :{

**She will! she is just a baby right now. I will let you speak to
her if we fail at other ways first. Please trust me on this one. **

A mental snort was the answer, but also acceptance. For now.

His face, while still showing surprise, was soft in understanding. He
had 'felt' the fear, worry, even panic in Luneth's mindvoice. While
it was hard to hurt them both, it only showed that it was more
necessary than ever.

"Luneth, I want only good things for you and your rider. Yes, you
scratched me. You should not have scratched me. It was wrong.
But you have been punished. The punishment for that is over. This
is something different. " He went on, still speaking to the green.
" I know you want to protect your rider, but she is safe. Luneth,
this is a thing that you must try. It is the best thing, the right
thing, for your rider if you try."

"I'm sorry Ninaine." he went on, addressing the girl now. "Its going
to be even more difficult than I imagined... I think that part of this
must be your own battle. " He leaned back in his chair, thoughtful
now.

"Its impossible to lie directly to our dragons, though we can,
sometimes, hide our thoughts from them. They can certainly do it to
us. " He was thinking of all the times Hasaarth had tried to talk him
out of drinking and finally shut off their connection in frustration
when he didn't listen. "I am not sure this will work if you do not,
in your own mind, believe it will work. You are going to have to
show her trust by showing us trust. And if you cannot open up to
trusting me... if my presence will make it more challenging.... I know
a greenrider or two that will help you instead of me. But it will
have to come from you. Part of the reason she doesn't trust us is
because you don't." He paused. "Am I right, lass?" Softly, with no
condemnation.

Luneth was visibly sulking beside Ninaine. She didn't like anything
that Hasaarth's was saying. She didn't want to try it. Her lifemate
hadn't left her side for a long long time and she didn't want her to.
It wasn't the best thing. The best thing was for her lifemate to
always be right there; she didn't mind. Besides, what would Ninaine do
with out her? }: I don't wanna. :{

Ninaine gave Luneth a sidelong look. She could already feel the
defiance of J'darin's suggestion building in the the little green.
Unfortunately, J'darin was right. Having Luneth be protective of her
gave her enough reason to keep people away from her. She knew what
weyrfolk got up to, especially having listened to some of the weyrbred
candidates talk, and she wanted no part of it. The problem was, she
didn't mind having that excuse most of the time. Luneth already had a
reputation for her quick temper and possessiveness and it let her keep
to herself without having to be rude. She flushed at the realization
that she had been hiding behind a baby. A baby _dragon_ true, but
still a baby.

Still sitting stiffly, her posture clearly conveying her discomfort.
"I know you mean well. I really do." She looked down at her hands.
"And I already know how to block thoughts from Luneth." Her mind
flashed to the cliff face before she smothered it just as quickly.
"But you're right," she admitted softly. "a large part of me doesn't
want it to work."
