Description: Ny'n asks if Oria will see what Degrorth thinks of his brother
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 10, day 5 of Turn 3
Ny'n lengthened his strides to catch up with the greenrider following drills. He had been reticent to approach his wingmate, but the letter from his father was nagging at his conscience. Unused to approaching women at all he felt somewhat awkward, but she was nearly ten turns his junior so he just straighten his back and put on a smile.
"Oria? Might I have a moment?"
"N'yn? Sure," she said after a moment, giving her taller wingmate a grin. "What's on your mind?"
"Well, with eggs on the sand, and regular threadfall duties, I know you must be inundated, but...well, I promised my father that I would ask. He really wants my brother to stand for this next hatching. Since I'm a rider, he thinks Glenyfin might have a good chance."
"I see," she said, sensing where the rest of this conversation might go. Almost anyone who wanted to try their luck was rushing around, and with her knots indicating searchrider... "You want me to see what Degrorth thinks of him?"
"Well, he's doing well enough with his training, and I would rather not interupt that and get his hopes up by just bringing him here as a candidate without some indication. So, yes, I would like Degrorth to give him a once over. I would be willing to make it worth your while."
"You don't have to do that," she said. "Where is your brother?"
"He's apprenticed at the Tanner Hall, but you don't have to make a special trip; I've invited him to visit the weyr this next restday," he paused thoughfully, running his finger across his scar, "We'll probably be having a hatching in the next several sevendays won't we?"
"I think so," she replied. An apprentice, so he'd be older than twelve, and under twenty two, but of course the brownrider would know that or he'd not have asked in the first place. "The beginning of next month I think."
"Then next restday should be fine, so you don't have to make an extra trip," he paused, "As long as you don't have plans to be out of the weyr. Glenyfin is seventeen and already a bit taller than me," he added with a chuckle, realizing that his younger brother must be about the same age or older than the petite red-head in front of him.
"Does he want to be searched?" she asked, knowing that some people really didn't want it. "I mean, the idea of being at a Weyr, and riding to fight thread doesn't worry him?"
"Riding to fight thread doesn't worry him in the least, which is why I recommended to father that we wait a few turns. My brother used to be rather reckless, as did I if truth be told," Ny'n admited. "Glenyfin would have come to the weyr the day he turned twelve if he'd had the chance. One reason I don't want to get his hopes up if Degrorth doesn't sense anything."
"How about we just happen to meet up?" suggested Oria. "That way, you won't get his hopes up if Degrorth can't feel anything."
"That would be perfect," he flashed the freckled rider a smile, "I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. I'm going to bring him in early to mid-morning restday. Should I have Damarith check with Degrorth when we arrive?"
"That'd be good," she smiled back at him. "Hopefully, she'll sense something. But don't get his or your hopes up."
"Definitely not, that's why I'm trying to be circumspect," he answered noticing that her hair wasn't really red, but more reddish blonde, really quite nice. Now that was odd, he never noticed things like that. He gave his head a shake and continued on, "You'll be hearing from us on restday,"
he said giving the greenrider a nod.
"I'll look forward to it."
