K'mai

K'mai

Savith was confirmed okay and settled, she was finally changed into
new clothes, and her parents had saved her a heaping plate of feast
food. Now it was time for the dancing, and Riven was hanging on the
sidelines, looking for anybody she recognized.

"Riven!" K'mai grabbed her and lifted her into a hug. "I'm so happy for you!"

She hugged back. "Thank you! I'm still in shock."

"I can imagine. Your green certainly knew who she wanted." A little
shiver went through him at the thought of what might have happened.

"I bet everyone's tongue was wagging after that." She hadn't yet
heard the talk, but she was sure there was going to be some. Weyrs ran
on it.

"Oh, absolutely. Impression from the Stands... it's proof of how very
special you are." His tone was light, but he did mean it.

She blushed a little. "I just feel honored she wanted me." When she'd
thought she was too old for this. "Was Sebeth very attached when
little? I didn't think she was going to let me come to the feast."

K'mai chuckled. "He went right out after stuffing himself. But maybe
she's a bit needy because it was hard for her to find you."

"I hope she's not this way forever." Of course she loved her dragon,
but she wanted to have a life. "If you don't see me for a few months,
that's what happened."

"I'll remember not to pout, worried that you're ignoring me." He
smiled. "Would you like to dance?"

"Absolutely," she said. She planned on dancing until she couldn't
stand any longer.

K'mai led her out onto the dancing square and wrapped an arm around
her waist. "You're going to be very busy and very tired for the next
few months. Enjoy this Feast as much as you can."

"It's going to be so weird to do this myself, not just cheer my
friends through it. And I feel out of shape! But it's going to be
great." Talking to Nytha earlier had boosted her confidence. "What's
the one thing you wish you'd known before you were a weyrling?"

K'mai tilted his head, thinking. "Honestly, that Thread was coming
back. But I assume you're looking for advice, so... I wish I'd known
how fast it goes by. When you're in the middle of it, you're so tired
that it feels like it's never going to end. But you blink and suddenly
your dragon's big enough to carry you, and you blink again and you're
graduating."

"I'll have to take time to be grateful for it, then." His words were
always good to hear. She settled in closer to him, glad he was a good
dancer. "I'm so happy. I keep saying it, but it's so true."

"It is. And it couldn't have happened to a nicer person." He bent to
kiss her forehead.

The words of confidence bolstered her spirits. "Hopefully I'll still
run into you on restdays."

"I'll be sure to check up on you, and Sebeth can play with your little
green."

"If she's as strong-willed as I think, he might regret that," she said
with a small laugh.

"Well, we'll see. He's pretty good at making friends." Rather like his
rider. K'mai spun Riven in a slow twirl.

"Then I hope they become good ones." She liked this song and the
smoothness of the dance. "Do you have excellent plans for this night?"

He grinned. "I'm going to dance and drink until someone drags me away."

"Sounds like the best way to celebrate a Hatching. Just don't
traumatize some pretty young Holder too much," she teased.

"Traumatize? I don't do that. I sweep Holders off their feet." K'mai
laughed and winked.

She grinned. "Well, good luck sweeping the prettiest."

"And good luck with your new lifemate." Such a happy day!
