Promising Young Rider

Writers: Chelle, Devin
Date Posted: 12th June 2014

Characters: D'ren, Rhosyn
Description: Rhosyn calls on D'ren for some help.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 7, day 8 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Lenala, K'sedel

Standing there at the tanners, she was looking at the mound of leather
that was taller than her she'd need to make a new pair of riding straps.
Rhosyn loved her dragon but sometimes she was reminded of the
difference between being Orlaith's rider and someone else's. It would
take her a few months before she got the job done with her other duties, but it
was going to take her a day before she could get all this up to her
weyr on her own. **Is anyone...free?**

Orlaith did a quick check of the dragons sunning on the heights, which
meant their riders were probably in the Weyr. Making a quick decision,
she bespoke a young bronze. }:Menanth, my rider requires assistance. Will
yours meet her at the tanners?:{

}:Of course he will, my Queen,:{ he said without even asking his
rider. }:Mine, the Weyrwoman needs you at the tanners.:{

**Me?** D'ren wondered if he'd done anything to get in trouble for.
But it would be the Weyrleader that called him if that was the case.
He dropped what he was doing and headed to the tanners. "Weyrwoman
Rhosyn. You needed me?"

She looked up, spotting D'ren. "Yes please...I need to get this leather up to my
weyr to turn it into riding straps. It'll probably take me several trips so I thought
maybe if you could push a cart, it could get it down to one?" She'd
never be able to manage it alone.

He almost laughed. Menanth had made it sound like it might be an
emergency. "Of course, Weyrwoman. I'd be happy to help."

"Ah thank you." Smiling with relief, she started to haul the leather into a
cart the tanners were going to let her use. Grunting with the effort, she forgot
the young rider was there for a bit as she displayed some very un-Weyrwomanlike
behavior. Rhosyn was small, but she was determined.

"Let me get that for you," he said as she reached for another armload.
She'd just had a baby and he didn't want her overexerting herself.

Standing back, she remembered she had to haul something like this out
each and every time Orlaith and she went flying. So she needed to get used
to it. She let him get the one she was trying to handle, but then she managed
to get the next one into the cart, filling it. Satisfied, she waited
for D'ren to get into position before leading him carefully to her weyr.

He got the cart rolling and followed her. Should he try to make small
talk? What could he say to her?

"So your Menanth did well when he caught Vilarth sometime back. Are you still
liking River Bluff?" Perhaps he'd get some of his other buddies at Dolphin Cove
to come this way if he was happy enough.

"Yes ma'am. Moving here was the right choice. I was very surprised
when Menanth caught Vilarth." He'd thought it would be turns more
before his dragon flew a gold, and that idea had been fine with him.
He wasn't the most ambitious bronzerider.

She had been too, but at least the bronze hadn't been that young. It could have
been a disastrous situation if he had. "Either way, you handled yourself well and
made the Weyr proud. Glad you're liking it. Made any friends?" That was a good
question indeed. Did he have a girl?

"A few." He nodded. "Congratulations on having a healthy daughter."

"Ah thank you. My first and probably my only. Hopefully she will make me proud."
And perhaps start to look like whoever her father was after a few months. Rhosyn
herself wanted to know. "Do you have children?"

"No ma'am. I'd like to have some, though. Maybe not right now, but
when I'm older." Despite everything, he still had romantic notions of
falling in love and starting a family.

"Oh sure, you have plenty of time. Men have all their lives for that
sort of thing. Just ask the Weyrleader." She gave a small snort. "Maybe by then,
you'll be a wingsecond or something else. You've proven yourself useful."

"Thank you, ma'am." They reached her weyr and he set the cart near the door.

"Thank you D'ren, you've been very helpful. Maybe I'll see you at midday meal someday.
You seem like someone good to talk with from time to time." That was a
proper invitation, allright.

There was always the possibility, slim though it was, that he could
win one of her Flights. And Menanth had already caught the 'Second's
gold. D'ren knew the invitation for what it was. "I'll see you soon
then, Weyrwoman." The idea made his stomach flutter. If he ever did
become Weyrleader, he hoped it was a _long_ way off.
