Getting to Know You

Writers: Avery, Yvonne
Date Posted: 14th June 2014

Characters: Riveenata, F'lin
Description: Savith arranges a meeting with F'lin because she's nosy.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 7, day 2 of Turn 7

Savith had become quite adept at picking through her rider's mind and then
interrogating her about what the little green found there. One thing she
did notice was that one person kept cropping up in her partner's thoughts.
But when she asked her rider why that was so, she didn't get a satisfying
answer. She just got a mix of emotions and sensations, some of which made
her feel unsettled, and the answer of "he's a friend" didn't explain it.
Riven thought of other friends without being like... that.

So Savith took matters into her own forelimbs, and reached out to a
draconic mind she hadn't touched before. }:Seneth? I have questions.:{

There was a small pause as Seneth felt around the edges of Savith's
thoughts, trying to figure out who she was. }:You are Savith,:{ he said
after a moment.
}:You are the hatchling who Impressed Riven.:{

}:Yes,:{ she said, pleased with the older bronze's recognition. If he knew
her rider, then he was a good dragon. }:Your rider and mine are friends?:{

}:Yes.:{ Seneth shifted his wings into a more comfortable position,
settling down on his couch to enjoy the conversation. He'd never been particularly
interested in hatchings after he'd graduated into a fighting Wing, but his rider's
pleasure at her choice of rider made her more interesting to him. And she was bold. He
liked that too.

}:Mine thinks about yours a lot, so I thought I should get to know you.:{
Savith was totally forthright about her intentions. }:And I should meet
your rider too, sometime.:{

}:Yes, you should,:{ Seneth agreed. Everyone should meet his rider.
Everyone would be as taken with him as Seneth himself was, the bronze
dragon was sure.
}:I will come to you! I can come right now, and bring my rider.:{

}:We are having a guest.:{ she told her rider.

**What, huh?** Riven looked up from the anatomy hide she was studying.

}:A guest,:{ Savith repeated, tail twitching. }:We should go outside.:{

Riven pushed the hides aside and followed her dragonet outside of the
weyrling barracks, wondering what was going on.

}:I look forward to meeting you!:{ Seneth seemed very decisive, and the
green found she liked that. Better than some of her clutchmates, who
dithered around.

A large shadow momentarily blotted out the sun, then Seneth landed in the
courtyard with a flurry of wings and dust. The hot sunlight glimmered off
his dusky bronze hide as he crouched to let F'lin slide from his back. The
bronzerider was wearing his riding gear, although Seneth was wearing only
the most minimal of riding straps.

"Hey," F'lin said a bit sheepishly. "So... Seneth said we had an invite. I
hope that's true, and this isn't a bad time?"

"I guess it is true," Riven said with a laugh and the smile F'lin seemed
to always bring to her face. "I think someone was arranging things without
me."

Savith ignored her rider's side comment and walked over to Seneth. The
bronze dwarfed the small green, but she didn't seem awed or intimidated by
this fact. She extended her snout to poke at his hide. }:Hello.:{

Seneth crouched so that they were at eye level. He was silent for a
moment, then he poked Savith with his nose and nearly knocked her over. }:You are still
very small,:{ he told her.

His rider laughed. "He just told Savith she's small," he told Riven to
fill her in, then he patted his dragon's foreleg. "It wasn't so many Turns
ago that you were small too, you lout."

It was a solid impact, and Savith wobbled and then stayed firm. }:I will
grow big and strong,:{ she declared in response to the bronze. }:You will
see how impressive I become.:{

"She is small, but she's stubborn. I think the Weyrlingmasters are either
going to love her or dislike her for her will."

F'lin snorted. "Sounds like a certain healer I know."

}:I believe you will,:{ Seneth said after a moment. He eyed the little
green speculatively. }:Your wings are a very pleasing shape.:{

"And here we go." F'lin turned to Riven with an apologetic smile. "He
can't help himself. Can I hug you to say hello, or will Savith object?"

}:Thank you,:{ the green said with a preen.

"I'm determined. She's obstinate," Riven joked. As for his latter
question, surely hugs weren't off limits, right? "I think you can."

"Good." The bronzerider closed the gap between them to wrap his arms
around, pick her up and spin her in a circle. When he set her down again he kissed her
noisily on the cheek. "How've you been? I've missed you!"

She felt a warm shiver run through her as he picked her up. "It's so busy!
Everyone told me, but - it's either classes or feeding or washing. And I feel like
I forgot everything."

Savith tilted her head as she considered her partner's feelings. }:Does
your rider ever feel odd and squirmy?:{

Seneth considered the question for a moment. }:No. He feels like my
rider.:{ Warm and squirming was ovine between his toes, not F'lin.

"You haven't forgotten anything, I'm sure." F'lin bopped her on the nose
with a fingertip. "It's all in there, you're just too sleep deprived to really
think about it. It gets better. The first few sevendays are hard, but they go fast, and
before you know it you're flying and going /between/ for the first time."

}:Mine feels odd around yours. It's very interesting.:{ And somewhat unsettling.
Savith was used to her rider's strong feelings about her, and now they were being
turned on someone else.

"I can't wait to fly. I'll bet you anything Savith's going to volunteer us
to be first. Good thing there's no gold in this clutch."

The bronzerider laughed. "I suppose so! Although we could use another laying Queen.
But you're right about bossy dragons-- there's only room for one. Who I should
introduce myself to. Hello Savith," he said, turning to the little green and bowing.
"It is a pleasure to meet you. You chose well."

The tiny green preened at the attention from a different source. }:I like
him, he's very polite. And has good taste.:{

"She says you're very polite and have good taste," Riven passed on.

"Which I do. Very perceptive of you, Savith," F'lin told her, before turning back to
Savith's rider. "How much time can you spare? Enough for a walk on the
beach, so you can tell me all about your first few days?"

"I think so," she said with a smile. **Do you mind, dear?**

Savith tilted her head and contemplated. The beach seemed too far for her
to go -and then her rider would be gone - but...

}:Will you stay with me?:{ she asked Seneth with a curious head-tilt.

}:Yes, I will stay.:{ The bronze settled into the sand and crossed his forelegs. }:I
will tell you about how ovines squirm when you hunt them, and how it feels
to fly through a cloud. I know many things,:{ he said smugly, suddenly pleased
that he had a younger audience to entertain. He was only three Turns old himself, so
this was a rare treat. Usually the older dragons were telling him things.

}:This sounds excellent. My meat is cut up and fed to me. it does not
squirm and I would like to know what it feels like to have a live one. My rider says I
can when I am older. Do you think..:{ and she launched into a whirlwind of questions.

"Well, look at that," F'lin said to Riven. "Looks like they'll be friends,
just like we are. We should go while they're distracted..." With a smile took her
hand and led her toward the beach, grateful for the chance to catch up that Savith and
Seneth had given them.
