Chaysea had a list of people that she needed to see, visit, or check
in on. One of them was Pierka, a young, pregnant greenrider. In one
hand the temporary Headwoman carried a clipboard, and in the other a
stylus. She found joting down notes helped her keep all of the
different things she had to do for the weyrfolk and dragonriders
without getting mixed up. It would certainly be embarrassing to send
up a box of feminine supplies to a male dragonrider.
Finding weyrs had been the hardest part, it wasn't as if people had
their names engraved on the doors, or anything, so she had to relay on
a diagram of the different weyrs in order to find her way around.
**One of those firelizards I have been seeing around would certainly
be helpful.** She thought as she arrived at what she hoped was
Pierka's door, and knocked.
Pierka woke to the knock and swung her feet off the couch where she'd
been napping and pushed out of the cushions. "Coming," she called
before crossing to the door. "Hello," she questioned as the door
opened on an unfamiliar face.
"I'm sorry," Chaysea immediately found herself apologizing, for she
had obviously woken the young woman, "I didn't mean to bother you. Are
you Pierka?"
"Yes," she smiled inquiringly. "I'm Pierka. Can I help you?"
Relief coursed through Chaysea, at least she was at the right place,
"My name is Chaysea, I am the new Headwoman, well, maybe," she
shrugged at that part, deciding there was no need to go into all of
_that_, "and so I was making rounds today and trying to acquaint
myself with people. Qorri left mention of you in the records, and that
you were," she glanced down at Pierka's abdomen, "expecting a baby."
"Yes," Pierka grinned. "Fairly soon actually."
Chaysea smiled, "Have you set up yet who your foster mother will be?"
She didn't have any record of it, and from what she knew of Qorri, she
expected that the woman would have written it down.
"Not really," she shook her head. "Qorri left just before we were
going to talk that through. I think she mentioned Ranari though."
Pierka motioned to the headwoman. "Would you like to come in?"
"Sure." Chaysea smiled as she stepped into the greenrider's weyr, "I
will double check on Ranari then and see if she has the space." She
jotted down the woman's name. She wondered how the young mother felt
about fostering. Chaysea knew that it was common practice at the Weyr,
but surely it still had to be hard giving up the child you had brought
into the world? Visitation seemed hardly enough to Chaysea, but, she
was holdbred.
"Oh thank you," Pierka smiled happily. "I was beginning to wonder and
didn't know if I should go the the Weyrwoman about it." She smiled at
the woman who seemed far younger than Qorri. Unconsciously she stroked
the side of her belly where she felt a bit uncomfortably stretched at
the moment. "Actually I'm glad you're here. I think I am going to need
a cradle."
"It is no trouble at all. I might not know a lot about dragons, yet,
but pregnant women I can handle." She grinned, "As far as the cradle
goes, I'll check storage and see what we have available. I am sure it
shouldn't be a problem. Do you have diapers and blankets ready?"
"I have some but I dont' know if they're enough. I was kind of
depending on the foster mother to help guide me."
Chaysea made more notes, "Not to worry, we'll get you stocked up."
There would be times when the foster mother couldn't be there, after
all, since most of the foster mothers that Chaysea had met had other
children to take care of as well. It never hurt to be prepared to
change a diaper or swaddle a baby.
"How are you doing on maternity clothes?"
"I'm fine," she smiled. "I won't need them all that much longer and
the laundry gets things back quickly." She smiled at the Headwoman.
There had been some surprises for her lately and some of them were
very welcome. "Since this is my last couple of weeks the kitchen has
started delivering my meals almost like I was the Weyrwoman," she
grinned.
"Oh," she added. "and I have a friend staying over so someone will be
here at night in case I need anything."
Chaysea was very pleased to hear that the kitchens were taking care of
Pierka so thoughtfully. The Weyr seemed to take care of its own a lot
better than the Hold did, "That's wonderful, Pierka, I am glad that
everything seems to be lined up for you." She looked back down at her
notes, "Well, besides contacting the foster mother, is there anything
else that I can do for you?"
Pierka thought for a moment. "Well," she said thoughtfully, "Do you
suppose I could have another pillow or two, it's just uncomfortable."
The Headwoman chuckled over that, "Yes, now that I can definitely do."
