In the stands, Ninaine looked down at the cluster of eggs with an awed
silence. She hadn't expected them to be so lovely. One in particular,
the largest and the brightest drew her eye, but she was almost afraid
to look at it. In a way, that egg held her future inside its hard
shell. If the gold inside of it chose her, her whole life would be
flipped upside down and she'd be thrust into a life she had never
expected. If it didn't, if she didn't Impress, she would return home
to her former life and begin again the search for a proper husband.
She didn't know which one she should want more.

N'call walked into the hatching cavern as he did almost every day at
this time to check on the eggs. He hadn't been this interested in a
clutch before simply because it wasn't 'his' or rather wasn't Haloths.
He found a profound peace in just watching Onnyth protectively curled
around them on the sands.

Haloth also hovered around the entrance watching his mate and their
clutch when they weren't either at drills or flying 'Fall. Often they
met Teseada here and sometimes candidates came to view the eggs. So he
wasn't all that surprised to see one of them up in the stands. So, he
bowed deeply to the queen and then took the steps two at a time up to
where the girl sat.

"Hello," he greeted her. "I'm N'call."

She rose immediately and dropped into a deep curtsey. "Bronzerider. Am
I disturbing anything? I apologize. I was just looking."

"Oh no, don't worry," he said. "If Onnyth is alright with you being
here, that is all that matters. You would certainly know it if she
wasn't happy with you being here."

"I made sure that I paid my respects." She remained in her deep
curtsey. She knew who he was; his dragon sired this clutch. If she was
going to Stand at this Hatching she had to make sure she didn't offend
the man. Who knew if he had some sway?

"Good good," he smiled. "Are you from the Hold? You don't really have
to do that in the Weyr," he pointed at her curtsey.

She looked up and slowly rose, nodding. "Yes, I am, Bronzerider." She
glanced at him. "Just because something doesn't have to be done,
doesn't mean it shouldn't be done. "

"Well I suppose," he said and then turned to look at the eggs. "Would
you like to go down there?"

Her eyes lit up immediately. "May I? Would it be allowed?"

"Onnyth thinks it's fine," he relayed after inquiring from Haloth. He
swept a hand toward the sands indicating that she should precede him
down the steps of the stands.

"Thank you!" She bobbed another curtsey and lifted her skirts as, with
his permission, she headed towards the sands. She reached the hot
sands and paused, looking over her shoulder at him. She wasn't certain
that she wanted to go by herself and anger the gold.

"Its fine," he shooed her forward. "Just don't move quickly and make
her nervous."

Smiling, she moved carefully onto the sands and with respect,
approached the egg. She didn't touch it, just marveled at it size and
the gleam of the shell. "It's beautiful."

His eyes were on some of the other eggs near by. "It's hard for me to
believe Haloth was once small enough to hatch from eggs like these."

"It's like children, I suppose." Ninaine spoke softly but her voice
still echoed around the cavern. She turned to look at the other eggs.
For a moment, she was wistful, but she straightened, remembering
herself. "Thank you, Bronzerider, N'call for allowing this."

"Of course," he smiled charmingly. "Just listen to the
Weyrlingmasters, they're there to help you, and I'm sure you'll do
fine."

The charming smile caused a faint blush to her cheeks and she cleared
her throat, gathering back her composure quickly. She curtsied and
inclined her head. "I will do so."

"Good," his smile broadened. "Think you'll do well." His head turned
at the sound of a bell. "Meal time, you should run along now."
