The First Logical Step

Writers: Rylie
Date Posted: 29th January 2006

Characters: Ny'n
Description: Ny'n considers the root of his lack of interest toward women and decides to take action
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 10, day 3 of Turn 3

Ny'n tossed and turned, finding sleep elusive. He checked Damarith, who
was deep in peaceful slumber and smiled. Ny'n relaxed back into his furs
and allowed his mind to wander. What was at the root of this restlessness?

He knew. Oh yes, he knew. Ny'n seldom allowed himself to think about it
and never when Damarith was awake. The lean rider ran his hand along his
scar as he was apt to do when agitated. Damarith had tried yet again to
persuade his rider to invite a greenrider to his weyr to share a wineskin
and anything that might follow.

Ny'n knew that Damarith dearly wanted a weyrmate as opposed to the
occasional dalliance at mating flights. Since he was a weyrling, many had
thought Ny'n must prefer men. Oh, if only it had been that simple! As if
there would have been a problem in the Weyr with his taking a male
weyrmate.

Throwing off the furs, Ny'n rose to pour himself a glass of wine. As he
sipped the wine he smiled while contemplating his turns in the Weyr. Life
was good. Oh, certainly with the threat of thread and all of the recent
tragedies, it should not be taken lightly. His finger found his scar
again.

Yet internal scars were even worse and the worst of his internal scars were
from before he entered the Weyr. He knew the root of his disinterest in
women, though he had not now considered it in many turns. At a very young
age he had learned to distrust and dislike females for their manipulative
and deceptive behaviors. By age nine Ny'n had been well exposed to the
ways that women used and misused their sexuality. He sighed.

He was long over his childhood traumas. There was no benefit to dwelling
in the past. Since coming to Dolphin Cove he had gotten beyond all of this
and worked well with, even respected, the women in his wing. Damarith,
however wanted more, and his love for his brown lifemate was what drew his
thoughts to events of turns long past. Well, his love for Damarith and the
news that the vile, sick wherry of a woman that had been his mother's
sister was dead. Pern was safe from her perverted debaucheries at last.

Perhaps, it was time for him to take the next step. Having long since
learned that all women were not like his aunt or others he had observed in
his childhood, perhaps it was time to undertake the task of .what? Ny'n
just wasn't interested in women. He no longer mistrusted or held females
in contempt; the brownrider just could not stir any romantic or sexual
interest. Well, for Damarith's sake he was going to learn.

The first logical step seemed to be to establish a few friendships with
female riders. There was nothing too intimidating about that. Just
establish a non-sexual relationship and see where that left him.
