An Escort

Location: Vintner Hall
Date: month 6, day 2 of Turn 7

Corran had been escorting a wayward young apprentice back. He'd found
the boy socializing with a younger friend at the Hold, and while he
thought boys at play were charming, he didn't want to get the boy in
trouble for being late for curfew. He entertained the boy on the walk
by telling some stories of his own childhood pranks. Once they were at
the main part of the Hall, he made a shooing motion.

"Do I haveta?" The boy asked, dark eyes bright. "You didn't tell me
about your brother's dragon."

Corran tried to look stern. "Do you want to get in trouble with the
Apprentice Master?"

"No."

"Then I can tell you next time."

The boy scampered off. As Corran turned to go, he saw someone he
vaguely recognized from around the Hall. "Evening!"

"Good evening Corran." Chaysea knew the guard's name as she knew most
everyone's name around the Hold and Hall. It came with being the
Hall's Headwoman. "I am actually on my way to the Hold if you don't
mind me tagging along with you." She always hated walking the path
after dark but she had promised Chupsin that she would stop by the
infirmary to let him see how her feet were doing. Recently she had
begun having more trouble with the soles of her feet since she spent
so much time on them during the day.

"I would enjoy escorting you," he said with a polite partial bow at
the taller woman. "It can be boring walking on one's own." He nodded
after the apprentice. "Do they give you trouble often?"

"Not too much, and if they do I just sic one of the vintners on them."
Chaysea with a conspiratorial wink as she fell into step beside of the
guard. "But then I suppose you have to deal with more troublemakers
than me."

"All part of the job. But I like children," he added. "I'd rather help
some lost kids back home than anything else."

Chaysea opened her mouth to reply but her foot caught in an uneven
patch on the ground and she flailed her arms as she pitched forward.
Instinctively her left hand flew out and grabbed hold of Corran's arm
for stabilization, "Well," she huffed once she righted herself,
"that's embarrassing." She chuckled.

"It's not every day a lovely lady launches herself at me," he quipped
as he reached up to steady her. "Are you okay?" he asked, more
seriously.

The Headwoman hissed as she experimentally moved her ankle, "Oh, I
think I rolled it, which is just my luck."

"Want to head to the infirmary?" he asked with concern.

Chaysea shook her head, "My brother's a healer so if I can just make
it to the Hold..." She blew a strand of hair out of her face, "He will
scold me, of course. A younger brother but always looking out for his
sisters."

"I think that's how siblings work," he admitted. "My brother and I
would have done anything to keep each other safe."

"Have you met Chupsin?" She raised an eyebrow as she gingerly put her
foot back down, feeling as if she were ready to resume walking, even
if it was at a tentative pace, "He'd try to run your life too if he
could." Chaysea chuckled a little over that. She would have said it
even if her brother had been with her.

"I know him, but not very well." He laughed with her.

Chaysea held up a hand, "Keep it that way." She winked.

"I pride myself in being nice and healthy." She was nice to spend time
with, he thought. "What's your favorite dessert?" he asked suddenly.

"Redfruit pie with icecream on top." Chaysea said this while licking
her lips, "Nothing is better than that."

"That does sound amazing." Maybe he could drop by and surprise her
with a small pie, but the ice cream might be harder to manage.

Chaysea glanced up from the ground at her walking companion, barely
able to make out his face in the dim lighting, "And you? What does
your sweet tooth crave?"

"The sweetmeats with the nuts," he said immediately.

The Headwoman wrinkled her nose and laughed, "Ewww, to each his own, I suppose."
