U'renn sighed in relief as he walked into the dragon infirmary. He
didn't mind his duties as a dragonrider, but his heart definitely lay
in helping dragons heal. His own blue seemed to have such a good
bedside manner with patients and was able to empathize amazingly well.
U'ren found himself learning from his dragon every day.

"Hi." U'ren spoke to the apprentice that had been assigned to work his
shift with him.

"Hello sir." Deajul replied softly. It wasn't because it was his way
to be soft spoken but because he had just glimpsed the bluerider knots
the man wore. This man was living _his_ dream. A bluerider and a
dragon healer both.

"No, sir, needed. I'm U'ren, and you are?" The bluerider asked,
cocking an eyebrow sideways at the younger man as he began rolling his
sleeves up his forearms.

"Deajul, I'm a candidate as well as an apprentice, so I spend a lot of
my time doing chores, not as much as I would like crafting." He
grinned, his delight making his blue eyes dance as his asked his
favorite questions. "Who is your blue? Does he like to meet new
people?"

U'ren didn't think much of the younger man's questions, they were
pretty common ones for a dragonrider, "His name is Ereth, and he loves
people, nearly as much as he loves helping other dragons."

The younger man was confused, "He helps other dragons? I know golds
can control wounded dragons and I could see where they would listen to
a bronze. I didn't know they would listen to any other color."

"I said 'helps' not 'orders', there's a big difference. He sits with
them and gives them comfort when they are hurting, he catches
herdbeasts for them to eat when they are unable to fly and get their
own. Things like that." U'ren explained patiently as he filled a
bucket with jars of numbweed and bandages and then handed it to
Deajul, "Carry this, and come with me." They would need to visit all
of the bandaged dragons and make sure that the dressings were clean
and dry.

Deajul accepted the burden silently, mulling over what the older
healer had said. He supposed it wasn't to different from what he did
when he meet the newly searched who were lost and homesick. " So the
human equivalent would be helping a new arrival settle in?" he asked.
The pair had reached the first of the wounded and he set down his
burden, removing the redwort first.

"I think the human equivalent would be a nurse with a good bedside
manner. He helps the other dragons when they cannot help themselves."
U'renn said this as they approached the first weyrcouch inside the
infirmary where a young green was laying with a bandage foreleg, a
flaming incident during Wing drills had been the culprit.

**That's an idea. Mabye I could do that if I don't impress.** he
thought as he handed the journyman the items asked for to tend to the
green. "About how much longer do you think until her forleg is
better?"

U'renn began removing the old bandages and checking the wound, "Oh, I
would say about a sevenday and she should be all set." He carefully
cleaned the wound, applied fresh numbweed, and then showed Deajul how
to wrap the bandages so that they would be firm, but not too tight,
"So, Deajul, are you going to Stand at the next Hatching?"

"Yeah, I've been standing for three turns now, I really hope he or she
is in this clutch." The apprentice smiled at the young green, "See
beautiful one, I told you you'd be better in no time." He had never
cared if a dragon answered him or not, he just knew greens liked to be
flattered so he did.

The bluerider smiled at Deajul's interaction with the dragon. It was
good to see someone that genuinely respected and cared for dragons.
U'renn hoped that Deajul would find his own lifemate on the Sands,
"You are young yet. You should have a few more Hatchings left if this
one doesn't work out, yeah?"

"Yeah, it's just hard when I've seen so many people come into the
Weyr, totally lost, and walk away with someone amazing. It doesn't
bother me so much when it's a bronze or brown, but when it's a blue or
green, I wonder what I did wrong."

"I understand that feeling, it took me a few times before I Impressed.
Just remember, Impression is like fitting pieces of a puzzle together.
It's not about your specific qualities, or anything like that. A
dragon and a rider uniting is like fitting two pieces together. If
your dragon had been out there you would have him already, and if you
are meant for one, you will find him." U'renn hoped that was
encouraging to the Candidate.

Deajul smiled, he'd heard as much before but there was something about
hearing it now. "So other than changing bandages what's on the agenda
for today?"

U'renn smiled a bit, as he began re-wrapping the bandaged foreleg of
the dragon, and then set about filling Deajul in on all of he details
for their agenda that day.
