Here for the Show

Writers: Avery, Emma
Date Posted: 11th March 2014

Characters: K'dee, Talwynn
Description: Two riders with a lot in common meet while preparing to see a spectacular night sky show.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 6, day 6 of Turn 7

River Bluff Weyr had a rather lovely view of the sun beginning to set,
Talwynn thought as Riveth spiraled down to land. She slid off her green and
began to take her equipment.

Riveth's eyes whirled blue-green in excitement. }:I want to find a spot to
enjoy the sun.:{

"Just let me finish getting my equipment," Talwynn replied. She unstrapped
the padded carrying case with her viewing equipment and carefully lowered it
to the ground. Then she struggled to get the basket with the blanket and
snacks down. She probably could have gotten food here, but she hadn't wanted
to be a bother. She finally got it to the ground and then patted her green's
shoulder. "Have a good time."

}:I will. I will sit with the males,:{ the green said. She waited until her
rider was clear, and then leaped up. Talwynn watched as her dragon found a
spot in the sun, near a few other dragons.

She hefted the equipment case on one side, clipping it to her belt, and the
basket in the other, and set out to find a good viewing spot.

"Here for the show?" K'dee leaned on his crutches, a spyglass slung across
his back.

She started slightly and turned to face the voice, smiling when she saw his
spyglass and read his knots. "I am. Talwynn, of green Riveth. Figured the
weather at night would be nicer here."

"K'dee, Vatonth's rider. He's the bronze sat shamelessly sunning himself."
Giving the greenrider a smile, it deepened as he realized they had something
in common. "Another starsmith then?"

"Well met, K'dee. And indeed. This should be a spectacular event."

"It should be." Although they would know when event sin the sky would
happen, predicting the clear skies was far harder. "And the weather looks it
will hold."

"And at least it's warm here." This was going to be a nice event. "Where's
the best viewing spot here?"

"Up there," K'dee pointed to a spot atop the bluffs. "You'll need dragon
help to get there, but it is worth it."

"Do you know if a lot of people will be here?" She wasn't sure how many
non-Starsmiths knew or cared.

"A few, I have some friends coming to see it as well."

"Excellent. I have a blanket to share."

"And I'm sure I can scare up some snacks from the kitchens here."

Snacks and company who knew about the Craft? Now she was relieved she hadn't
stayed at Dragonsfall. "How often are the nights clear here? It can get
cloudy and snowy at Dragonsfall."

"Most nights there's some clear weather, but we do get plenty of rain in
season. No snow though," he said. "I've only seen it a couple of times."

"If you ever want to see it, come visit sometime. There'll be more frozen
white stuff then you'll know what to do with."

"Would I be able to manage with these?" he asked, moving slightly so that
she could see his condition.

She took a moment to consider it. "I think we'll be able to make something
work. If all else fails, I know a few places in snowy areas that are flat
and easier to walk about than Weyr steps."

"Well maybe I'll have my Vatonth speak to Riveth and see what they can
organize," he suggested.

"Sounds good." She could use a trip with a new friend. "So where to for
those snacks?"

"Follow me," he said. "The kitchens aren't far away."

She tried to study K'dee's injuries without being intrusively rude - he
didn't look as adapted as she was, so she suspected his were more recent.
The old Talwynn would have stared and asked, but she had learned some
discretion. "Has River Bluff always been your home?"

"Born and bred here, my Da's a rider too."

"I've been to Dolphin Cove and Dragonsfall. But I think these views might
even be more striking than those of Dolphin Cove. Wasn't much for the beach,
always preferred heights and falls."

"Depends what you grow up with I guess," K'dee said after a moment. "This
will always be my home."

"And it's a gorgeous one," she smiled. "So what led you to the stars?"

"Ma's a smith, so I took a few classes, but the starsmith classes were far
more fun."

"Absolutely. What other craft lets us be outside all night for legitimate
reasons?" she asked with a laugh.

"I can't think of any," that did raise a grin.

"See, we're lucky wherries." She peered around curiously as they got near
there. These kitchens looked different from hers, but the smell of food was
always comforting. She hung back and let him do the talking.

A few moments later and he had a bag of wrapped goodies. "They know me
around here."

"I bet it's because you're cute," she quipped. "So you said the viewing
point is only dragon accessible?"

"For me it is," he said, taking a mental note of her saying he was cute.
"I'd never make it up the path to the top of the bluff."

"I don't mind," she reassured him. "And the view'll be amazing, I bet."

"Trust me, the clear skies tonight will make it worth while, I spent ages
with the weather charts to make sure it would be."

"Oh, fantastic." Dragonsfall's weather made it sometimes hard to see the sky.
"Shall we adventure, then?"

"Let's," he offered a gentlemanly arm.
