Knowing that D'hol was going to live, but in the miserable period of
waiting for him to wake up, Jeyme felt as if she owed a thank-you to
someone in particular. Arriving outside of Pierka's weyr, she knocked
on the greenrider's door, hoping to find the woman home.
Pierka wasn't aware that more than a couple of people knew she'd moved
closer to the ground from her sky high seaside weyr so she was a bit
surprised when it wasn't Z'ku at the door. "Oh hello there," she
smiled.
"Hey Pierka, I hope you don't mind, I asked Saibra where I could find
you. Do you kind if I come in for a minute?" Jeyme asked, relieved to
find the other greenrider home.
"Oh sure," she said stepping back to let the other woman into her
weyr. This one was a bit larger than the tiny one at the top of the
seacliff where she'd lived since her Weyrling days but more
importantly, it had internal access to the rest of the Weyr and it's
services. "You're Jeyme right?"
"I am," Jeyme flashed a smile, realizing that she had intruded into
someone's Weyr without giving a proper introduction. Where was her
impeccable holdbred etiquette. "I won't take up much of your time.
D'hol's my weyrmate and I wanted to come by and thank you for catching
him."
"Of course," Pierka nodded. She'd never have let anyone fall if there
was the remotest chance of saving them. "I was just in the right place
at the right time." She smiled a bit possessively. "It was Liddith,
I'm really very proud of her."
Jeyme could not help the irrational wash of hot tears that pressed
against her eyes, "I know, but a lesser dragonrider might not have
been there. I know D'hol will want to thank you himself later." She
left it unsaid that there was no guarantee he would wake up.
"Hey," Pierka could feel Jeyme's distress and wrapped her arms about
the other rider. Of course her belly got a little bit in the way and
the baby chose that moment to kick them both. But she clung to the
other girl. "It's going to be ok."
It started out as a sniffle, and then Jeyme found herself crying on
the other greenrider's neck. How embarrassing! She truly had not meant
to come over and blubber all over Pierka, but she found that it was
such an emotional time, and without any real friends to speak of,
besides Arippa down at Green Valley, Jeyme felt very much alone. When
she felt the baby kick between them, Jeyme backed up a bit, and gave
Pierka a watery smile, "How is your pregnancy going?"
"Really well," she said with a bit of guilt. She knew Jeyme had lost
hers and didn't want to seem like she was gloating and besides she had
her own problems with the baby's father. Her place wasn't all that
large but it was enough for her and soon for her baby. "Let's have
some tea," she smiled and turned to her small sideboard.
"I am glad things are going well for you." Jeyme said, sincerely, as
she took a seat and accepted the tea from Pierka, "I'm sorry, I am not
up on weyr gossip or I would probably know. Who is the father?"
"Do you know bronzerider T'nom? I think he's in D'hol's wing." She
nodded and then shrugged.
"I have seen T'nom, mostly in goldrider Meledei's company." She traced
a finger along her cup of tea, "Are you on good terms with him then?"
"Mmhmm," she acknowledged the information about Meledei. Pierka
shifted uncomfortably in her seat at the next question though. "Well,
not so much since he dumped me."
Jeyme's eyes widened and she sat a little straighter, "Oh, I'm sorry,
I wouldn't have asked if I had known that you two had been involved."
She had just assumed that the baby was the result of a mating flight.
She sighed. "I didn't have a chance really. Meledei crooked her finger
and he went running." She shook her head. "Our relationship was more
friends and he's really wanted her for a long time. I didn't stand a
chance."
Jeyme had never really discussed her own situation with anyone but
Arippa, but she felt as if she and Pierka were in similar situtations,
"Well, in confidence, I know how you feel. D'hol and the Weyrwoman
were... involved at some point in their past. She is like his one
great lost love, or something like that." Jeyme rolled her eyes.
"I'm sorry," Pierka murmured. "But at least the Weyrwoman is weyrmated
and from all accounts really loves K'deren. I didn't believe all those
rumors."
"She is but that doesn't stop her from being around all the time."
Jeyme smirked a little bit, "If T'nom will let Meledei tell him what
to do then he is not good enough anyway." She said, back to the
original subject.
She smiled back at Jeyme, she found she really liked and and just
maybe they could build a friendship. "I like the way you think," she
lifted her cup.
