"Hey Jeyme." News traveled quickly through a Weyr, especially where
dragons were concerned. It was no secret that something had occurred
between D'hol and his - now former - weyrmate. Meledei motioned to
the seat across from her with the hand that did not clasp the tray.
"Mind if I sit?"
Jeyme looked up from where she was picking up at her food, "Of course,
have a seat." She really wasn't feeling like conversation but could
not refuse the goldrider.
"How are you doing?" It was a loaded question of course, considering
recent events. If anything, Meledei could sympathise with the
greenrider. She'd not gotten to the weyrmating stage with F'gol,
though that had been because he'd suggested they wait. In hindsight,
it had been a very good suggestion with how things had eventually
turned out.
The greenrider shrugged her shoulders, "Not so great." A wan smile
crossed her face, "but then as guess you know that."
"Yeah." Meledei lowered into a seat and settled her tray in front of
her. "I'm sorry Jeyme. I really am."
"I always knew that something like this might happen. D'hol was never
dishonest about his feelings for Cyradis, and as a hold girl I have
heard all the stories about how bronzeriders can be." Jeyme pushed
some tubers around on her plate.
Meledei grasped her fork and started to poke at a piece of meat, then
set it back down. "It's not just bronzeriders."
"Oh?"Jeyme raised an eyebrow and turned her gaze to the goldrider.
"Blueriders can suffer from it too." Meledei shrugged, her eyes
focused on her food a moment before they lifted to fall upon the
greenrider. "In other words, you're not alone, I understand. Though
I know that doesn't help a single bit."
Jeyme looked down at her plate, "No, it doesn't. If I hadn't said
anything things would have continued as they were, D'hol and I would
still be weyrmates, but.... I had to know... I had to know if he loved
me at all."
Meledei nodded slowly. Her food remained untouched, cooling even as
she conversed, but she didn't really care. "Because what's the point
in being weyrmates if he doesn't love you. I get it. I would have
done the same thing in your shoes."
"I am glad to hear you say. Most people just give me that whole 'you
are hold bred you don't understand how it is at the Weyr' speech. Load
of dung I say. Don't ask me to be your weyrmate if you are still in
love with someone else." Jeyme snorted.
Meledei nodded. "Yeah, I've gotten asked if I am hold bred because of
my opinion when it comes to relationships." She tore her eyes away
from her food to the woman who sat across from her. "I'm not like
most. I was born and bred in a Weyr, but the whole going from person
to person, having open relationships - well, that's fine if you're
okay with it, but I'm not. I want to be monogamous. I know, flights
and all, but those are different. Anyway, I would expect the same if
someone wanted to be with me." And she did expect it of T'nom, though
she found it rather ironic that he seemed to struggle with the
concept. He was the hold bred one, not her! "So I agree with you a
hundred percent. It may be the most common way of things at the Weyr,
but that doesn't mean it's the only way."
Jeyme didn't know if she would have such an adverse reaction to D'hol
occasionally sleeping with other women, she tried to tell herself that
it_was_ the Weyr, but anything concerning Cyradis was off limits in
her book. **Oh, come off it Jeyme, you would be upset no matter who it
was.** A very smug voice told her, and part of her knew that it was
true. D'hol had never seemed that way, however, only with the
Weyrwoman, maybe that was why it mattered more.
The greenrider shook herself from her thoughts, "Thanks for the
support Meledei," it was hard to believe that she was older than the
goldrider, "I appreciate it. I should be going now," she stood up and
pulled a face, "chores and all, you know."
"Yeah. Fun. Not." Meledei wrinkled her nose in sympathy. Then,
before the greenrider could depart, she asked, "Hey, some friends and
I are planning a bonfire in a couple of sevendays, on the rest day.
Would you be interested in coming?"
Jeyme's face lifted into a smile, "Yeah, that would be great. Thanks
Meledei! See you then." She waved.
