Preparing for Coming Changes

Writers: Ames, Chelle
Date Posted: 21st January 2014

Characters: Rhosyn, H'vack
Description: They chat about changes coming.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 4, day 28 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Briata, Lenala, Tsaera

On this particular day she was grateful for the excuse to get out of
her office. Rhosyn avoided the piles of hide and headed to the barracks
to see H'vack instead. After a few talks, she had a lot on her mind and
wanted to hear what the man thought about it. Stopping by his door,
she peered inside to see if he was in fact, in.

H'vack looked up when he heard someone approaching.

"Ah, Weyrwoman Rhosyn, to what do I owe the honor today?" he asked as
he rose from his seat and gestured for her to enter and take a seat.
He moved almost instinctively to pour her a glass of water. He'd
learned in their many encounters recently that that was her drink of
choice.

Taking it and swilling it down quickly, she took a deep breath after the walk.
Carrying all this weight around was ridiculous. She began to understand how
Orlaith felt when she was egg heavy. "Just wanted to see how everything was
going and if we're on track?" Now that Vilarth had flown, she needed to make
sure there were plenty of good candidates out there.

**Wait! Briata can't Stand now! Well shells, that was stupid of me to not even
realize what I've done. Rhosyn you have cut your own foot off!** Just
realizing that, a rather dark look came over her face.

"All is well. We've quite a few good candidates already eager and
waiting for their chance to Stand and others have arrived recently,
either having heard the news that eggs will be on the Sands soon or
for other reasons. We should have a good group for Impression this go
round." He nodded, pleased with the numbers they already had. Overall,
the training had been going well, and most of the candidates were
_truly_ ready to take on their responsibilities when the time came.

"Well as you know in a few sevendays I will be grounded due to my rounded
self. I'll still be completing my everyday duties until it gets close
to time. When I pop, though, Lenala will be the one you'll report to." She needed
everyone to be on the same page.

"Right, that is not a problem," H'vack replied. "When will that be do
you know?" He was already trying to calculate when things might have
to change based on the Weyrwoman's pregnancy.

"Well to be honest....we're looking at a few months or so depending on
how things go." That meant it depended on who was the father and when
the deed was done. As she got closer to time and larger, Rhosyn would
be able to pinpoint it a bit better, she hoped.

"Alright then," he replied. He would make the necessary preparations.
He waited to see if there was anything else she wanted to tell him about.

"Whenever the candidates have their physicals, mark on the reports if any of
them have anything odd." That was par for the course, but this was only H'vack's
second Hatching at River Bluff. He hadn't had much time before the first one.

"Odd? In what way can I ask?" H'vack was curious what she meant. The
candidates were given a basic physical to make sure they were healthy
and ready for the activities that would ensue when they arrived and at
various other times during their candidacy. He wasn't sure what the
Weyrwoman was asking him to look for beyond what was considered
standard procedures.

"Pregnancy, recent injuries, illness." There had been one girl at Vista Point
that had developed a growth that had turned out to be dangerous, she remembered.

He frowned at her words, but that was the only visible reaction to
what she'd said. Yet inside he was seething. Did she think him
incompetent not to know what would impact a candidate's ability to
Stand and train as a weyrling?

"I always make a note of anything that might be an issue for our
candidates in their training," he replied, his tone just slightly less
friendly than it had been before. "If there's nothing else, I'd best
get back to the training so we have healthy and prepared weyrlings for
the fighting wings."

"I realize that, but you asked what I meant so I clarified." She didn't like that
tone. And she also realized he was dismissing her. And that was not something
_he_ could do. So she continued to sit there, not moving. If he left his office with
her still in it, then there would be a problem. The Weyrwoman would not tolerate
disrespect.

He waited as she waited. Clearly there was something more she wished
to discuss. "Was there more you wished to discuss?" He finally asked
after the silence.

"How are you liking River Bluff so far?" Her tone was still just as calm as before,
not belying her inner irritation. "Are you able to work well with your
assistants?"

He settled back in, seeing as she wanted to chat further. He would
oblige her interest and answer her questions. He had hoped to not miss
the entire class, but alas, it appeared it would. He knew his
assistants could handle it.

"Actually we work very well together, overall. They run a tight ship
and communication is key among us all. As for River Bluff, I'm liking
it quite a lot. I wouldn't mind a bit of social time with some of the
other riders, but lately things with the weyrlings have kept me so
busy that I've not had much time for socializing." He'd hoped to have
developed some deeper friendships at the Weyr by now, but so far the
only friendships he'd acquired seemed to be very surface level only.

"Once the new class is older you'll have more time. Of course there will
be another one coming in a few months, so take the time you have." She
took a breath and looked at her belly, then her head came back up.
"As you can guess, there is going to come a time when I am unable to fly.
Lenala will be taking over my wing duties during that time until she can no
longer fly when Vilarth is too egg heavy. At that point, my wing will be led
by our former Weyrwoman-Tsaera, but Lenala will be performing my duties
until the healers clear me to come back." She knew it sounded confusing.

He listened trying to follow all the directives regarding the queen's wing.
"Okay, so it sounds as though Lenala will be my main contact regarding
anything with the weyrlings if Tsaera will only be leading the wing
itself. Am I right?" He wanted to make sure he knew the chain of
command in her absence.

"That's correct. Until I am able to resume my duties. However, when you're
flying the weyrling wing-you'll be dealing with Tsaera some of the time."
That was important to note since the Queen's Wing flew under everyone.
The younglings were usually on top of them so they caught less than the wings
above when they were blooded.

"Right, that makes sense as well." He would be dealing with _two_
goldriders rather than just the usual for a time. "We will make
everything work until your return to active duty."

"I hope so. She's coming out of retirement for this so I'm hoping she
hasn't forgotten what to do." Rhosyn sighed. At least Tsaera had been
around for five turns when Thread was falling on River Bluff. Getting up
slowly, she turned around. "Hopefully the Weyr won't fall apart."

"We'll make sure it doesn't," he replied, standing with her. "And
hopefully you can rest easy with your new babe while we handle things
that need handling." He'd never had any official children of his own,
though he was sure there were some out there, but he knew women
enjoyed the time with their young children in a way he'd never
experienced. "All will be well. I'm sure of it."
