"Here's the spices you wanted," Kustaava said and handed a jar for the cook. Still new at the weyr, her tasks in the kitchen were mostly drudge work or runnig errands and fetching things.
"Why thank you. If you have a moment I could use a bit of help. I need someone to continue stiring this while I put these spices in.' He smiled.
He had noticed her running about trying to help and decided she could use a break.
"Thank's," Kustaava answered. "What are you cooking?" she asked.
"It's a heardbeast stew. Sad thing is there isn't much heardbeast to put in it. So, I am trying to add enough other stuff to make it still good." He smiled.
"Have you tried adding more root vegetables?" Kustaava suggested shyly.
"Hmmm, perhaps I should add a bit more. Experimenting is the way recipes are formed are they not."
"Yes they are" Kustaava agreed.
"Would you mind tasting it and telling me what you think?" Though his father had always told him he wasn't very good at cooking, he had always been told by his friends that he was very good. He was usually confused by this.
Kustaava dipped a spoon in stew and then blew to it to cool it. After it was cooled, she slurped the stew into her mouth. She smacked her lips. "It's good but could use little more pepper and some herbs, maybe garlic or basil?"
"Perhaps both." He said as he sprinkled in the suggested herbs. he also added a few others and stirred it.
"How come you became a cook? Most men I've known couldn't care less about kitchen work?" Ava asked curiously.
"Well, at the time I wasn't good at what my father and brother was good at.
My mother was trying to find something I could do. Finally she taught me about the kitchen and I loved it. When she died I kept at it. My brother and father always found fault in what I made. It was confusing when people outside our little family would say my food was the best they had had.
I always thought they were just being nice." He smiled saddly.
Kustaava gave his hand a symphatic squeeze. She could understand father's like that. "They weren't nice, they meant it."
"Thank you. You to are very kind." He smiled softly.
"You're welcome," Ava grinned. She thought he was cute. The Weyr seemed to be full of cute boys.
Just as Bayadrin was going to say something a rather large bronze flit alighted on his shoulder and gave Kustaava a inquisitive chirup.
"Ooh, is he yours?" Ava asked, her eyes round with amazement.
"Yes, Would you like to give him a scratch?" He carefully put Pan into a better position to be given attention. The flit was only minorly annoyed with the move but then put his attention on the girl instead.
"Can I?" Kustaava asked shyly and reached her hand to give the flit a careful scratch.
Bayadrin smiled as he watched her. "He realy likes when he gets attention. if your not careful you may make a new friend forever." He chuckled.
"I don't mind friends," the candidate-girl answered seriously.
"Then I hope you will allow me to be counted amongst them." He smiled with hope in his eyes.
"Oh, I certainly will allow it," Kustaava answered, smiling.
"Good, I'm glad." He smiled genuinely. "If you ever need anything you can always come talk to me."
"Thank you."
