The kitchen was, as always, a buzz of conversation, and as always
Jhanri was listening in with interest. There was of course, talk of
the new goldrider. She was the most recent addition to the buzz of
news and much speculation. She'd already been seen with several
different riders, and like the other drudges, Jhanri wondered if she
was actually sharing beds with all of them.
But her news...She glanced around. She thought it was far better and
it was something that no one knew. She glanced at the woman next her
her, slicing the tubers. "Everyone already knows what Saibra's doing.
But I saw something that will just curdle your ears."
"Oh did you now," Letra said from where she punched dough on the
counter getting ready to bake fresh rolls for the lunch rush.
Seeci took a moment to stop pumping the churn up and down and wipe her
brow with her apron. "What is it this time Jhanri? N'vanik take
another greenrider to his bed?"
Peeling the tubers, Jhanri rolled her eyes. "Oh please...who cares
about _that_?" She lowered her voice. "You all have heard about the
Weyrwoman's pregnancy, right?' She glanced around as her knife paused.
"It's not her weyrmate's...I'm sure of it!"
"No!" said Letra. "How do you know _that_?"
Proud that she finally had news that no one else had heard, Jhanri
managed not too look too smug. "I saw her and D'hol. Together." She
smirked. "All wrapped up." She looked at the kitchen door to make sure
that Qorri wasn't coming in before continuing. "You've heard about
them, right? That they have a past and that's why they fight all
time?" She grinned. "From what I saw...the past isn't over with at
_all_."
"Really," grinned Seeci. "That's interesting!" She'd been thinking
about going up to one of the flight rooms to see if she couldn't catch
that very bronzerider after a lost flight. She wouldn't mind spending
a little time in his furs and didn't hesitate to say so on occasion.
"Well I don't blame her if she did. He's a nice piece of manflesh and
I don't think anyone could argue whos seen his parts angry," she
nodded and grinned at the others.
"Aww cummon there Seeci," Letra put in. "We all know you'd hike your
skirt for any angry manflesh pointed in your general direction."
"Aye and theres no shame it in at the Weyr," she sniffed. "Alls I'm
sayin' is I don't blame the Weyrwoman if she's havin' some fun wi' it.
Not to mention the Weyrleader and the man wot warms her firs every
night. More power to her"
Jhanri laughed aloud at the pair sniping at each other. "Maybe you lot
shouldn't try for the same man at the same time. 'Sides, that D'hol's
already got a weyrling at his beck and call. He must like 'em nice and
young, except for the Weyrwoman, if you think about it. " She grinned
at Seeci and stuck out her tongue. "Course, during a flight, no riders
gonna care how old you are, now are they?" She tossed the tubers
towards the other woman and continued. "No shame, sure, but think of
it, maybe D'hol and Cyradis are more serious than they're letting on."
She paused and took a moment to examine the tuber for any rot and
slowly smiled. "He's been spending lots of time with that young
daughter of hers and I noticed somethin. Maybe you lot can guess."
"I don't mind sharing," Seeci popped off and stuck her own tongue out
at Jhanri.
Letra rolled her eyes. 'Like that's news," and punched the bread
again for good measure before setting it back to rise. "So where
exactly did you see this Jhanri?"
"I know!" The spit boy had been quietly listening to the women talk.
He'd seen Kielya in the lower caverns and he nodded and grinned at
Jhanri but he also knew better than to steal her thunder. She placed a
mean kick when a body wasn't looking for it.
"We all know you don't mind sharing." Jhanri smirked. "With anyone,
sometimes at the same time, right?" She caught the spit boy's gaze
and put her hands on her hips before huffing and turning her back to
him. "Have you not looked, Letra? The girls dark, not like the other
of her brood. Dark curls and hazel eyes. With dimples." She nearly
bounced on her toes. "Dark curls..dimples...kind of similar to our
good Wingleader, don't you think? Course, she always claimed the girl
was her old weyrmate's."
She bent to lean towards the other women. "But you look at the pair of
them together and you see it. That little girl's the spit image of
D'hol. So..." She took a deep breath and held up a tuber like a
pointer. "it ain't the first time she's covered up a child to look
like someone else's. "
She looked at Letra. "They was in his office of all places! I was
going in there to..." She paused and shrugged..." well, I was going to
see if he wanted a bubbly pie or some klah. He works so hard, you
know, and I thought I might give him a bit of relief. But the door was
open and they was hanging all over each other! It looked like he was
just about ready to throw her on his desk and rip her clothes off!
They weren't trying to hide it at all."
"Bubbly pie? Is that what you're callin' it these days," Seeci
snorted. Though there was no love lost between Jhanri and herself she
was no less caught up in the story.
The spit boy kept turning the side of heardbeast in the great
fireplace though his head was nodding and a sly smile curved his lips
as he watched Jhanri's back.
"Oh _my_!" Leeta's eyes rounded. Her mild case of Weyrwoman awe was
taking a bit of a hit. "And here I was so sure she'd found her true
love."
Scoffing at Seeci's comment, Jhanri tossed her braid to the side. "And
what would you have done? Gone to his office and just bent over and
lifted your skirt? Some of us are a bit more lady-like than _you_."
She turned back to the others and nodded towards Letra. "Well, mebbe
she does love that weyrmate of hers, but it obviously don't stop her
from hankering for another man. And he wasn't exactly pushin' her away
neither. I figure that the babe's his and they've been goin' at it
ever since he came here. That greenrider he's taken up with is just a
bit of meat on the side, I think. We all know that bronzers want the
golds." She lifted her lips gleefully. "I'd not be surprised if we
ended up with a new Weyrleader next time Panitath rises."
Seeci just shook her head. Raised in a hold she happened to know
Ladies were no more immune to a man's charms than a drudge, and their
bums looked just the same. "Have you ever _met_ a Lady? There's one
got knocked up by a rider over to Dragonsfall and got kicked out of her
Hold." Seeci nodded for emphasis. "So there's no difference!"
"Well I think we all knew he had a thing for her but I sure didn't
know she'd spread for him." She nodded at Jhanri. "Flight's not far
off neither so I'll bet they're both hankering for a bit of flight
lust," she laughed.
"I said lady-like, not how a Lady actually acts. I don't care who they
have crawl up their skirts, but they are supposed to act a certain
way." Jhanri sniffed audibly. Seeci, to her mind, was one of the
cruder women in the kitchens. Really, it was a wonder that she hadn't
had a litter of children with as many beds she filled. "They don't bed
anyone who offers. " She looked pointedly at Seeci and then turned
back to the rest of her audience.
"Well, when that Flight happens, I'll be watching...and waiting. If
D'hol gets her, that's just fine. N'vanik will need some comforting of
his own."
"Thats no fun," Seeci muttered and stuck her tongue out at Jhanri's
back. Besides, there were other riders that were bound to be at the
next flight who'd need some consoling... like mebbe K'deren or even
R'enh, or that young Z'ku and that young man was a right hunk.
"Well, we'll just have to see then, won't we?" Letra turned back to
her bread making.
