After speaking with Tsaera, Rhosyn thought it was only fair to talk with
Lenala-alone-about the whole thing. She wasn't the only one who was going
to have to deal with the older woman. And, in all fairness, Lenala
might not like the idea either. Deciding it was high time she feel that
out a bit more before talking to K'sedel, she told Orlaith to let her
Wingsecond know she'd love to speak with her after her duties were done.
Being a woman of the Weyr and huge, she actually finished her own list
and went back to her weyr to climb into the bathing pool. Sighing, she
waited as her muscles relaxed and her body floated.
"Rhosyn?" Lenala called when she walked in. At first glance the weyr seemed
empty and she wondered if the message she had gotten had been garbled. It
sometimes happened when dragons forwarded messages. They weren't always that precise.
"In here!" she called before subsiding again. She listened to the footfalls
and figured out when Lenala had entered the chamber. "Feel free to sit or
jump in. I don?t care either way. I just ache all over and this helps."
Indeed it did. Her eyes remained closed as she waited to see what the
other goldrider was going to do before she began the conversation.
Lenala was shocked, two goldriders in the same bath? What would people
think? It might be a bronzerider's wet dream, but not hers. "No, thanks,
I'll pass," she said and pulled herself a stool. "What's up?" she was feeling
a little uncomfortable with the setting.
"So I went yesterday and I met Tsaera and talked about the whole thing with
her. Before I say anything, though, what do you think about all of it? Do
you want to work with her again? Can you? You know her better than I
do." Just thinking about it was making Rhosyn tense up again and she tried to relax.
"Well, I'm torn about it," Lenala said. "I respect her and she taught me a
lot but she was also very straightforward and demanding. She didn't hold back
her opinions when I disappointed her."
"And I do?" That brought a chuckle from Rhosyn. Then again, she always
spoke with Lenala in private if she had issues. It was one thing she had
learned from being publicly humiliated herself. "If she does come, she will only
be here to lead the Wing when both of us are grounded. Just the wing. You
can do the Weyrwoman duties on the ground around the Weyr when you're down and
I'll do them when I'm stuck until the baby comes. You will have to work with
her, though, more than I will." Because as soon as Rhosyn was physically ready,
it would be her way again. "Did you learn more under her or with me?" She needed
to know that Lenala was ready. This, more than anything else, would put pressure
on the other rider to succeed. The whole Weyr would be depending upon her.
"Well, you're straight too, but differently. You don't chew me to pieces,"
Lenala answered and smiled. "I can't say, honestly, who taught me more. You
taught me different things," she shrugged.
"Well as I see it, we don't really have another option. So I guess what I'm
asking is, are you ready? And if there is anything I can do during the process
to make it smoother, feel free to let me know." She had no qualms about going up against the old
rider. "We need to have her here before you're grounded so she can get moved in,
meet the other Wingleaders, learn the changes I've made, and get acquainted
with the new wingriders so that when you go down, she'll be ready." Rhosyn
also wanted to watch her a bit before the changeover, but she didn't say that.
"I can manage it," Lenala assured her. "I did before and I can do it now.
She's not here forever, just for few sevendays," she continued.
"I wouldn't be too sure of that. The way she talked, once she gets
here-she's staying. She won't be leading the Wing forever, but she'll be here."
Rhosyn didn't like that at all. "It's not as if we can kick her out once she moves in. We'll seem
ungrateful and she is a queenrider, due respect. So if she wants to stay, which
she seems to, she'll be here till she decides to go." She needed Lenala to understand that.
"Well, she's lived here most of her life, if I understood correctly.
Perhaps she feels this is home." Lenala tried to sound neutral although she had
a chill down on her spine of the thought of retired Weyrwoman bossing around.
"Maybe so. Perhaps they don't know how to take care of people in the North.
I don't know. Either way, it looks as if we're going to be stuck with her
shardit all." She ducked her head under the water in protest and came back
up. "I'm going to tell K'sedel and then get with Solieira to get that other weyr
ready. Make whatever preparations you need to since you will be leading the Wing
in a sevenday and getting her up to speed. We also need to warn our wingriders
and maybe the other Wingleaders." That would be a good idea indeed.
"Most of the Weyrs have retired goldriders hanging around," Lenala pointed
out. Of course, those Weyrs didn't have _Tsaera_ as a goldrider.
"We do tend to live long lives." It wasn't the idea of a retired goldrider
that bothered Rhosyn. It was loss of control and therefore, loss of freedom. She
didn't want someone judging her. "I can't live like I used to. That's the only
thing. So hopefully for the Weyr's sake, this will be fine. If not, well I am
Weyrwoman and I'm not going anywhere till I die. And I will do as I wish." She
knew she didn't have to tell Lenala how it had been-the other goldrider had been
there for some of it before she'd transferred.
"Yes. I always thought we were handling this Weyr well, just two of us. And
now this," Lenala said with pensive sigh.
"If I hadn't decided to keep the little one, things would have worked out.
But there are times like this when it's good to have three golds- not the least
of which being we need quite a few eggs during a Pass. Still-we have managed,
until this hiccup. It's okay though, we'll do what we can and get through.
Hopefully, she'll understand what retirement means when she goes back to it."
Rhosyn sent a few thoughts Orlaith's way and the gold reassured her the only way
she knew how. }:This is our Weyr:{
