W'ser

W'ser

With classes and taking care of Camilth, it was getting harder and
harder to find free time for her chosen craft. She had known it would
be so, but she tried to find as much time as possible to visit the
infirmary to observe and learn. Leaving Camilth outside, Paetri ducked
into the dragon infirmary, arms full of supplies; she'd noticed
yesterday that they had to be restocked.

Humming softly to herself, and admittedly a bit off key, she bustled
through the cabinets, pausing here and there to offer a bit of comfort
to a bronze flit with a broken wing and then a tiny little green flit
with a deep scratch.

"And here I was about to complain that I couldn't get anyone to
restock the supplies around this place." W'ser's voice sounded from
behind the Weyrling. The Weyrdragonhealer had noticed the low supplies
as well, but had thought that if he left it unmentioned assuredly one
of his journeymen would take care of it. It shouldn't have surprised
him that it was Paetri who took it upon herself to restock. W'ser had
found that the girl was more than willing to work hard and learn, and
he liked that about her.

"I noticed yesterday. I'm kind of surprised it didn't get done before
now." She looked over her shoulder and offered a rueful smile. "I
should have been paying a bit more attention, I guess." She settled
the bandages into their place and then began to arrange the vials into
the cabinets. "I'll be sure to keep a better eye on it."

"I am sure a dozen other crafters passed by and noticed that it needed
to be done." W'ser said outloud as he watched Paetri work, "How is
your Camilth doing?" He asked conversationally.

Paetri flushed and shifted from foot to foot. "Well, I've been doing
it, so I guess they figured that I would get to it.But we've been
getting busier and I just haven't been able to." She finished with the
vials and turned with a more relaxed smile. "She's doing well,
actually. She's still smaller than average, but I think she'll always
be small. She's a bit delicate."

"Sometimes those delicate ones make the best flyers." W'ser smiled and
took a seat on top of a nearby desk, "But supplies and such isn't the
real reason I came out." The Weyrdragonhealer didn't always take a
special interest in any particular apprentice or journeyman, but there
was something about Paetri that brought out the fatherly instincts in
him and made him want to take her under his wing. "You have got a
birthingday coming up, don't you?"

"The weyrlingmasters told me that she'll be more agile." she agreed.
She then paused and scratched her head. "Do I?" Her gaze went a little
distant as she thought about the month and the day and then her eyes
widened. "Oh...I guess I do!" She smiled, a bit embarrassed. "I forgot
about it. I've been busy, I guess. It's tomorrow."

With Sasima's help, as W'ser would never have been able to think of a
gift on his own, the Weyrdragonhealer had managed to wheedle one of
the weavers into sewing and embroidering a custom dragonhealer patch
that could be sewn onto the shoulder of Paetri's riding jacket. "Well,
it is not much, can't show favoritism after all, but I wanted to get
you a little something for your birthingday." He said, extending his
hand and the patch.

Paetri's eyes widened and her lips parted in surprise. A gift from
W'ser had been the last thing she had expected. "Oh but..you didn't
have to." She carefully took the patch and ran her fingers over it.
"It's lovely." She finally lifted her gaze and a brilliant smile
emerged. "Thank you. I'll sew it on right away." She held the patch to
her chest, and bounced on her toes a little. "Thank you."

W'ser grinned, "You are welcome, Paetri. Do you have any family at the
Weyr that you will be celebrating with?"

She shook her head and looked down at the patch, still feeling the
stitches against her fingertips. "No. My older brother is a rider, but
he's at another weyr. I don't see him very much. And my family at
home..." She sighed. "Once I Impressed a green, I'm afraid that they
don't want much to do with me."

The brownrider shook his head, "I am sorry to hear that. Their loss,
of course. You'll find that as time goes by your fellow dragonriders
will be more family to you than anyone else."

Paetri gave a slight smile. "They already have. I was never much good
to my family anyway." She stroked the patch. "But my brother still
loves me, even if he can't visit much. And I have good friends." She
lifted her head up. "And I feel useful too."

"I am glad you feel that way, Paetri, you have a lot of promise as a
dragonhealer so I hope that you decide to stick with the craft. I know
it can be difficult during those first couple of Turns as you are
learning the ropes of being a dragonrider, but it is worth it."

She nodded firmly. "I mean to stick with it. I love the infirmary."
She glanced around. "I know I've not been here for many lessons, but
we've been going over some basic dragon first aid with the
Weyrlingmasters. I was wondering if you could show me a little more
advanced care?"

W'ser smiled, "Of course, I would be happy to help. You pick a time
that is good for you between your chores and classes and I'll move my
schedule around."

At that, Paetri was surprised. "Oh, you wouldn't have to move your
schedule just for me, that wouldn't be right." She nibbled on her
lower lip. I usually have about a candlemark of freetime every evening
after chores."

The man mentally reviewed his schedule, "I think that would work out
perfectly, Paetri, that is usually when I am making my rounds checking
on the dragons in the infirmary. You could come along."

Eagerly nodding, Paetri smiled. "I'll do that. Definitely. Thank you!"
