K'mai grinned as the woman stepped into the hall. "Hello, Weyrwoman.
Do you need any help with that?" She had an armload of clothing.
"What? Oh! Umm yeah K'mai, it'd be nice." Rhosyn was only so big and
could only carry so much. And anyway if the bluerider wanted to
help, who was she to say no? Giving him about half the load, she
continued towards her weyr. All these maternity clothes-she was going
to have to go through them.
For a moment he was about to ask why she was carrying so many clothes,
but then it all clicked. "I'm guessing this is your new wardrobe for
the next few months. Congratulations, by the way."
"Yeah when I get fat and ugly. Thanks though." She huffed, already
getting hot with all this effort. And then she was hungry. "Did you
know that being pregnant makes you want to jump every man in sight?"
His eyebrows shot up. "Is that a proposition, Weyrwoman?"
Grumbling, Rhosyn wished he was what she wanted. And that she didn't
care. "Honestly, K'mai, I'd probably break you in two. You couldn't
handle me." No she was going to have to fix this, somehow. "And then I have
to pee every two minutes."
"Well, I have to admit, _that_ isn't my kind of thing." His eyes danced
with amusement.
"That's what I'm saying. As this thing goes on, it just gets more and
more disgusting. I get fatter. I have to pee all the time. I get sick.
My feet swell. Everyone keeps talking about this pregnancy glow and
whatever, I think that's a load of manure." She snorted, seeing they
were almost to her weyr, thank Faranth. "And then I eat like a herdbeast
which can't be pretty."
K'mai wasn't sure she got the joke, or if she was just too preoccupied
to care that he'd made one. "Rumor has it the one to blame for your
current displeasure might live at another Weyr."
"There might be a few to blame so we'll just have to see when the little
thing comes out. Course it might just be my spitting image with no one
the wiser, so I guess there's no point in speculation." She
deflected that answer easily enough. Then again, it was the truth.
He arched an eyebrow. "I mean no disrespect when I say this, but you do
make things quite interesting around here, Weyrwoman."
"Oh? How's that?" She was half listening, but it was clear she wasn't
offended by what he said. It took a lot to offend Rhosyn since most of
the time she was the one doing the offending.
"Well, your mystery illness which no one seems to be able to explain,
and now the question of whether our Weyrleader or someone else's
fathered your child. Ah, and there was that incident with the holder
throwing wine on your dress at one of the Dolphin Cove hatchings. You
do keep the gossips busy." K'mai dearly loved their old Weyrwoman, but
she hadn't been as entertaining as Rhosyn.
"Could be the Weyrleader. As far as that goes, I thought that was how it
usually went with Weyrfolk. I mean a lot of the women aren't sure about
whose kid it is. That's the nature of things so it's nothing new
really." She didn't think it was. Same old story. "And that guy at
Dolphin Cove was an idiot. No manners. Served him right. Though I did
hate to ruin Janani's Hatching like that, really did. Course she's gone
anyway so guess it doesn't matter." A flash of anger showed at the
mention of that name.
"Ah, but things are more interesting when Weyrleaders and Weyrwomen are
involved." They reached her weyr and K'mai opened the door for her. "Were
you... displeased with the way Janani left?"
One the one hand, Rhosyn knew that goldrider business was goldrider business.
On the other hand, everyone at Dolphin Cove knew that the woman had left. "A
Weyrwoman is a Weyrwoman till the day she dies. Janani left her Weyr. You don't
do that. She shirked her duty."
"I did think it was very strange. I wondered if there was something more to it."
And the Weyrwoman before that had tried to kill herself. Did they have something
in common?
"I don't know. I never spoke to her before or after she left. Though good riddance
to anyone who would leave their Weyr in such a fashion." Poor River Bluff. Rhosyn
was entrenched, for better or for worse.
"Ah, well. Who knows what's in another person's mind." K'mai shrugged.
"Where would you like me to put these?"
"Just lay them there on the sofa. I've got to go through them all. Some of these will
not work." Huffing, she set down her load and stood there for a moment.
K'mai set down his armload of clothing. "Need any help sorting through them?"
"What do you know about womens' clothing, K'mai?" She gave him a funny look.
"I have opinions on fashion." He lifted a loose green dress. "This for example,
would highlight your eyes nicely."
"I can't tell if you're full of it or serious." She did laugh though. "Allright, you can help."
