I'll Be Back Soon

"Keep still, you little trundlebug!" N'tur spoke aloud, breaking into Graileth's mental conversation with a laugh. The brown hatchling did indeed pause momentarily, probably from surprise. Then he resumed his happy wriggling, his faceted eyes whirling happily. His dialogue also resumed.

}:I am no bug, mine. I am a _dragon_. Your dragon. And one day soon we will fly together and burn Thread. When I am big and strong. I'm going to fly fast, so fast and so far. I cannot wait to fly. Do you think we can try soon?:{

"No, my heart. It will be a long time before we can fly." N'tur felt good, buoyed by his dragon's good mood. He was getting used to the incessant questions. Graileth was a curious dragon, and loved to talk. Ruefully, N'tur thought his beautiful brown acted more like a green than anything.

}:I am not a green.:{ Graileth's declaration was carried hurt to his rider. N'tur apologized. **Of course you aren't, mine. I'm sorry. I love that I always have you to talk to. But if you don't stand still, I'll never get you oiled.**

Though Graileth was small at this young age, only seven feet in length, there seemed to be twice that much when it came time for bathing and oiling. N'tur was exhausted by the time they finished each morning. It wasn?t the hatchling's fault; he got bored just standing there, began to chatter, and punctuated his words with movements. Now he was trying hard to keep still, but N'tur could feel the tension bunched beneath his baby muscles. He grinned. At three sevendays old, Graileth had the energy of a runner stallion.

}:I wish you didn't have to go. Why can't you stay here, with me? I miss you ever so much when you leave.:{ The brown's voice was wistful, and N'tur felt his heart tear at his words. He threw his arms around his dragon?s neck.

"I'll be back soon. I just have to get some breakfast, love." He squeezed. "You've had yours. I need to eat, too." It was like this every morning-- even though Graileth would fall asleep immediately upon his departure, the little dragon lamented the necessity to be separated, even for a moment. N'tur couldn't get annoyed, though. This was what he had wanted: a partner who wanted him.

Patting his muzzle affectionately, N'tur resumed his work. His stomach growled unhappily. N'tur found himself wondering what they would be serving for the first meal today. Above all, he wanted? a good? cup of klah. It was early, and he had slept poorly last night, running over his studies in his head long after the weyrling barracks had turned in for sleep. He was still new to the dragonhealing craft, and he wanted to do well after Y'gel had gone through all the trouble of getting him transferred.

}:You will do well, mine. You will be a wonderful dragonhealer, and I will help you. We will be a good team, you and I.:{ Graileth spoke happily now, his distress over his rider's impending absence forgotten. It was not the first time the brown had expressed his joy over N'tur's apprenticeship. The little dragon seemed to feel that being a dragonhealer pair gave them an advantage in their class, and often made private remarks to N'tur about what he considered "silly work" in other weyrlings.

Giving the now-gleaming brown flank one last stroke for good measure, N'tur stepped back to admire his work. In response, Graileth craned his neck around to inspect. }:Thank you, mine. That feels ever so much better.:{

N'tur grinned at his dragon's praises. **I love you, Graileth.**

Warm affection filled his mind as the brown sleepily climbed back onto his couch. His eyes blinked heavily, the outer lids falling almost shut before he was even settled in. }:And I you, N'tur.:{

Cleaning up his mess quickly, N'tur gave his lifemate one last longing look. He never wanted to leave this wonderful creature, the other half of his heart. He had waited all of his life for this pairing, and now that he had it, N'tur wanted to enjoy every minute with his dragon, his friend, his _partner_. Then he slowly made his way out the door of the barracks, all the while exuding mental promises that he would return soon. But Graileth was sleeping, and gave no response.
