Kaya sat on the couch waiting for Wirnan. She wasn't sure what he
would do. She hoped he would like it. She hoped it would show him
she was trying to change. That she had made a decision to be his
wife, to choose to be his wife. She hoped...hoped...but would it?
She didn't know. Possibly not. After all, she'd done so much to him.
She stared down at the wrapped package. It wasn't huge, but she made
it a decent size, at least a foot on one side. She had thought it was
one of her best pictures and she felt she'd managed to insert Wirnan
in it so that he looked natural with the rest of his family. She'd
had him smile. She had to admit, she missed that smile.
He was tired, but all in all it had been a good day. He'd gotten quite
a bit done and he was proud of that.
Opening the door to their new quarters, Wirnan entered. Kaya was there.
"Afternoon," he greeted her.
Kaya stood up and she nodded. She managed a small smile and a soft,
"Good afternoon." She fingered the package and then stepped forward
to hold it out to him. "Happy birthingday."
He froze. His mind counting the days. He'd completely forgotten. His
own birthingday and he'd forgotten about it. No one had said anything
to him all day.
He smiled at her, "Thank you for remembering."
Her smile grew a little larger. "Do you want to open it now?
Or...would you like dinner first?" She motioned to their table upon
which were various covered dishes to keep the food hot.
"Um," he looked to the gift and then to the table. "Let's eat first.
I'm hungry. Then I will be better able to enjoy whatever is inside
that package."
"All right." Kaya set aside the package and then moved to the table.
She waited until Wirnan had sat then began to uncover the dishes.
Steak, tender and moist, was accompanied by seasoned fingerroots,
mashed tubers, a green salad and a fruit salad that contained several
different types all chopped and mixed together. Kaya placed a
generous portion of everything save the fruit onto a large place then
put it before Wirnan. The fruit salad she put onto a smaller place
and set that behind his larger. Once he was taken care of, she began
to work on a plate for herself.
He watched as she uncovered the dishes, his stomach growling at the
scent and sight of the food. She'd gotten all of his favorites. He
smiled while she loaded him up with some of everything. He waited
until she was finished and had taken her seat before looking at her
gently.
"Thank you. This is wonderful. All my favorites." Truthfully Wirnan
liked many things, so he had other foods he enjoyed as well, but steak
was by far the top of that list. He began to cut into the tender meat,
eager to sample it and feel the juices running down his throat.
"I'm glad you like it." Kaya took her napkin and unfolded it before
she lay it upon her lap. "I wanted your birthday to be special." She
wasn't sure she had succeeded, but at least he liked the meal she had
made. It was nice to have that small kitchenette for just such an
occasion.
"Thank you. It already seems to be," he smiled at her. Something had
changed between them. He couldn't put his finger on what it was. After
Turn's End he'd given up all hope of ever finding peace between them
and enjoying their marriage. Yet, somehow, while he'd been stewing she
had seemed to change. He hoped it wasn't an act, but he was having a
hard time allowing himself to believe that things could be better in
the future. He'd seen this ebb and flow before, so while he_was_
happier at the moment, he was still guarded.
Kaya didn't say anything else, she just smiled again. She began to
eat and let Wirnan enjoy his food. When he finished she offered him
more. When it came time for dessert, she uncovered one last dish, this
a pie with a white center. "My mother used to make this for me on my
birthingday - sweet cream pie."
Dinner was good. Wirnan had eaten his fill. Then she revealed dessert.
"That looks delicious, I cannot wait to try it." He had a sweet tooth
just like any other man and he was eager to satisfy that craving with
the dessert she'd made.
It was good. Lightly sweet with buttery overtones. Kaya gave Wirnan
a generous slice and took one a bit more modest for herself. When
that was done, she wiped at her mouth with her napkin, then placed it
on the table. "Everything taste all right?" She asked softly.
Having finished his own slice of the pie, he sat back and his chair
and rested his hands over his stomach. He was full and satisfied.
"Yes, everything was delicious. Thank you," Wirnan told her with a
smile. She'd gone out of her way to make his birthingday special. He
appreciated that.
