Benani

Benani

Kaya rapped lightly on the door. Wirnan had told her about the Lady
Holder's offer. He wanted to take it, and Kaya had a feeling she knew
why though she said nothing in regards to it. He was still ill,
though, so she decided to take matters into her own hands - hence why
she had scheduled some time to talk to Lady Benani.

Benani had spread out a wide selection of fabrics she'd requested from
the weavers. The samples ranged in color scheme and she was bent over
them feeling the weight and nap. "Come in," she called absently.

Kaya stepped into the room and paused when she saw the array of
colours spread out all over the place. Slowly, she moved forward
until she came alongside the Lady Holder. "My Lady..."

Benani looked up with a smile. "Oh hello Kaya, Please have a seat.
What do you think of all these?"

"These?" Kaya looked at all the fabrics. "There are so many...but
they're nice." Were the Lord and Lady redecorating?

"Any particular color scheme you'd like for your new quarters?" Benani
smiled expectantly at Kaya.

"So this is all for us?" Kaya honestly hadn't expected Benani to take
so much part in the move, though she had been about to ask for some
assistance. She gazed at the colours. "I think...it would be good to
make it...not overly feminine."

"Not all for you, In fact with Arippa and Faldrimme gone, I'm
redecorating several of the suites on that level. In fact the whole
south side of the wing." She smiled. "But since you and Wirnan will
move to one of the empty ones I had though you'd like it redecorated
first. Any preference in color scheme?" As she asked the last question
she pulled out another book from beside her. "These are the wall
coverings."

Kaya fingered one of the fabrics. It was very fine indeed.
"I...well, maybe jewel tones and cherry wood?" Her tone was hesitant,
as if she were afraid that it was too much.

Benani nodded. "That could work. But what do you want for your base.
Red, green blue, purple?" She waved a hand at the fabrics. None of
them contained all the colors. " This one is nice," She pushed a blue
and green brocade sample with a gold colored threading, toward the
other woman. "We could accessorize with yellow or red."

"I like that. A lot." It was gorgeous and Kaya couldn't help but
finger it. "Although...is there, perchance, this fabric with silver?
I think that would be even more lovely. Maybe for the sitting room
and the main bedroom?" It was just so pretty and since she wouldn't
get to enjoy it in the bedroom, she could at least see it in the main
sitting room. "Perhaps an amethyst in the other bedroom?"

"Of course," Benani smiled. "And I'm sure the woodsmiths can restain
the furniture. It needs some work anyway. The last occupant had small
children so there are the predictable scuffs and nicks."

Wirnan might want those replaced, but no sense in doing it right away.
It was enough that the Lady Holder was doing all of this for them.
"I'm sure it will be fine."

Benani made a note about refinishing the furniture and laid aside the
blue and green fabric to remind her to ask the weavers if they had the
same with a silver threading. "Now what about the amethyst. There are
several," she said pulling them from the stack.

"I like this one." Kaya immediately gravitated toward a fabric that
was a deep purple with a silvery gray inlay. The design was floral
inspired, but not actually flowers. Curls and waves wound over the
fabric in thick lines.

"Oh yes," Benani smiled. "I like that one too." She pulled out a soft
gray silky fabric. "This would look lovely for bolsters and pillows on
both color schemes don't you think?"

"Yes. And it will give a sense of...connectivity. The rooms will
look different, but they have a common denominator." And that, Kaya
thought, would help tie everything together in the end.

"Exactly," Benani said with a smile. "You have a good eye Kaya." Maybe
she could spare some time to help with some of the other rooms as
well. Half of a floor was a bigger project than she'd originally
thought.

"How's Wirnan feeling?"

"He's doing much better. He's still not completely well. I'm trying
to convince him to stay home at least one more day, but he's eager to
get back to work." And probably away from her, but really, Kaya
couldn't fault him.

"They always do," she smiled thinking of Zathris. She couldn't keep
him in bed when he was sick and had practically given up trying. "And
then we have to push them back." She winked.

"I'm not sure he'll listen." There was a small smile given, but Kaya
turned her attention back to the matter at hand. "Thank you for doing
this. It's very kind of you."

"Oh not at all Kaya," Benani waved a hand at the other woman. "He was
due larger quarters when he became my husbands Steward, but he refused
them as he was then a bachelor. Now that he has a family it is far
past time for him to move. It is his due after all."

Benani put down the samples and took only the ones Kaya had selected
and handed them to her. "Would you like to show these to Wirnan and
get his opinion?"

"Yes, I think that would be good. I don't want to make any final
decisions until he gets to have his say." Kaya accepted the offered
materials and layered them over her arm. "I'll take them to him now.
Maybe this will help take his mind off of his illness for a while."

"Thats fine," Benani smiled. "Just bring them back after you've had a
chance to show them to him and I'll get the workers started."
