A Look of Joy

Description: Fitchan and Ameala catch up at the feast
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 2, day 25 of Turn 7

The food smelled good, really good, thought Fitchan as he waited for the
appearance of the new weyrlings. To some extent he was probably in shock.
Even though he'd encouraged Ameala, he'd never really given serious thought
to the idea that the dragons would choose someone not weyrbred. He'd always
known that there was far more to his wife than most people saw. She was
smart, funny, talented, and now she was going to be dragonrider.

Time was simply whirling around her. She'd hardly had a moment to
register all that had happened. First, the sounds and the Sands. Then
the voice of Ingoth that reached out to her. Ameala looked down at the
little green and smiled. She felt intense love when she looked at
Ingoth. The feeling was much the same as what she felt when she looked
at Fitchan, though it was also different somehow.

Then, in a matter of moments, it seemed the dragonets had all grown
sleepy from their busy work and hunger and most had drifted off to
sleep. Ameala had seen Ingoth settled and then proceeded to join the
others as they made their grand entrance into the feast.

The cheers and congratulations and handshakes went on for a moment
after they'd arrived. She had no idea who was talking to her, she only
had eyes for one person, but she couldn't see him for the press off
people near the entrance. When the crowd finally parted, her eyes
caught sight of Fitchan. As quickly as she could she extricated
herself from the others and hurried over to him.

"Fitchan!" She called out and then all but threw herself into his arms.

Much as he wanted to embrace her, he knew he couldn't, that and the site of
some very watchful members of the weyrlingmaster's staff. "Congratulations,"
he managed, the word a little stiff. He really didn't know what to say now,
even what was appropriate to say.

His reaction gave her pause and she pulled back. In her excitement
she'd forgotten about the rules and stipulations over relationships.
Ameala sighed, but then her mood could not be dampened. Taking his
hand, for she _knew_ she could hold his hand, she sat beside him.

"I can't believe it, Fitchan. _I_ actually Impressed a dragon! She is
amazing. She talks to me. I can _feel_ her."

Those words alone told him how real this was. "She, what's her name?"

"Ingoth," Ameala replied. "I can't wait for you to meet her. She's
already sleeping now though with her belly all full." She looked at
Fitchan. Her eyes were a bit wild and full of excitement. Her cheeks
were even a bit flushed from everything that had been happening around
her. She squeezed his hand and said excitedly, "I can't believe this
is actually happening!"

"Me neither," came his honest reply. "It just seemed to happen so fast."
There was no way he could deny the look of pure joy that had crossed her
face as she spoke of the dragon. It felt like he had a rival already, one
that may well beat him to her heart.

She sighed. Everything was changing so fast. Her hand still in his she
looked at her husband. "The only bad thing is that I won't be able to
stay with you for awhile now. Not until Ingoth grows up enough." She
frowned. "I'm going to miss you. I don't wan to live apart from you."

"I'll miss you too, in more ways than I can say here," he squeezed her hand
gently. "But you know waiting can make things so much better."

She gave him a sad sort of frown. "I know, but it's a _long_ time. I
wish you could be with me while Ingoth grows. She could be like _our_
dragon." Ameala wanted both the joy she felt when she was with Fitchan
and the radiance she'd felt when Ingoth had chosen her. She wanted it
all. "Once we are allowed, Ingoth and I will move back in with you."

"I don't think there'd be room." Yes, they'd had plenty of space for a
married couple, more than he'd thought they'd be given, but their rooms
couldn't fit a dragon too.

"Oh," she replied a slight frown forming on her face. "Well, the
riders get their own weyrs to house the dragons. You'd just have to
move in with me then once they give me a place." **Yes, that should
settle things,** she thought.

It seemed almost like too neat a solution. "We'll deal with that when the
time comes for you to find a place."

"Right," she nodded. "It will be awhile before we have to worry about
it." Ameala wanted to lean against him, feel his warmth and comfort,
but she held herself upright, not wanting to get her or him in
trouble. She feared that she would also lose all contact with him if
they crossed any lines the weyrlingstaff didn't like. "This isn't
going to be easy. Being apart," she said quietly.

"Tell me about it," he said equally quietly. "but at least we can see each
other and talk, we've got that much."

"It's going to be hard, Fitchan," she sighed. "I'm used to having you
by my side all the time."

"We'll get through this," he assured her. "Maybe Ingoth was meant to find
both of us."
