(Part 1 of 2)
"Hi Pierka," T'nom said, walking up to the greenrider. He hadn't seen
nearly as much of her as he had before he'd started his relationship
with Meledei.
"Haven't had a chance to talk with you much. How's the wing training
been going?" He knew how proud she was of being moved to the
Weyrleader's wing.
She closed her eyes for a moment but when she turned her face to him
she was smiling. "Hello T'nom," she replied. "Training's going
alright. I may fly Fall next sevenday." **If I decide not to keep the
baby**
"Oh, that's great!" He replied, "I'm sure you're excited to get back
into things again. I _am_ really proud of you Pierka." He wanted to
talk to her more, explain why he hadn't come to see her in awhile, but
wasn't exactly sure how to broach the subject with her just yet.
"Thanks," she said and pulled her knees up to her chin where she sat
on the rock looking out at the ocean. Liddith was off playing with the
dolphins again. Her chin lightly rested on her knees. "Congratulations
on your win," she said softly.
"Thank you. I honestly didn't expect it. Taldeth is still beaming from
the whole thing. I've no idea what to expect next with all that, but
it's definitely exciting for us." He couldn't hide the joy that
winning Elleth's Flight brought him.
"I know I haven't seen you as much since then. Things have
been...busy." He wasn't sure what else to say. He liked Pierka, very
much, in fact, but he couldn't allow that to ruin this one chance he
had with Meledei.
"I know," she said softly and turned her head to look at him. "I'm
happy for you." The crazy thing about it was that she really was happy
for him. She knew how long he'd been pining for a chance with the gold
rider and as much as she wanted him, she wanted him to be happy.
"Thank you, Pierka. I knew you would understand. I miss spending time
with you though." He paused and lifted a hand to touch hers. He meant
what he'd said. He wanted to spend more time with her, but with things
so new with Meledei, he couldn't trust himself to just _be_ with
Pierka as a friend. Also, he was worried that Meledei would suspect
other things were going on. He'd made her a promise in that regard and
he intended to keep it.
"Yeah?" She was just a little tweaked because he hadn't spoken to her
in days. "Could have fooled me." She pulled her hand away.
He stood there for a moment, surprised by her reaction. Then he
grabbed her hand again and made sure he had her attention. "I'm sorry
Pierka. I should have said something sooner. Meledei made me promise I
would be exclusive with _just_ her if I wanted a chance." He wanted
Pierka to understand that this hadn't been completely his idea.
"Please, don't walk away. I don't want to hurt you, but I..." he
heaved a frustrated sigh, "I have to try this. I've wanted it for so
long. I would regret it if I didn't at least try. But it was her way
or no way." He frowned. He understood her desire for such things, in a
committed relationship, but it was still hard for him, now, so early
on in their attempts to see if they were even suited for such things.
Her hurt eyes turned up to look at him and she slowly pulled her hand
away again as he finished. Her legs unfolded and she hopped of the
rock. "Well," she said. "You've gotta do what you've gotta do. But
you're a little late. I'm already pregnant."
"What?" He responded, standing there, staring at her. His mouth gaping
open. "Well, I'm happy for you then Pierka." His brow furrowed a bit
in confusion at her revelation. He couldn't fault her for finding
someone else, though it saddened him as well. He had not claim to her,
and he'd already committed himself to this relationship with Meledei.
"Whose the lucky guy?" He never once thought of _himself_ when he
asked her the question.
She couldn't believe the question and blinked. Of course _she_ knew
there was only one possibility but how was he to know that. She flung
both arms up in exasperation. "You are!"
"What?!?" He stated, rather loudly. He stared at her. His heart rate
accelerating. He took a step closer to her and leaned in. "Are you
_sure_ it's me?" His voice had grown raspy as he tried to deal with
the onslaught of thoughts, feelings, and more that seemed to rush at
him with her words.
"Lunkhead," she said pushing him away. "There _is_ no one else," she
hissed at him with tears in her eyes.
He moved after her, his hand sliding around her arm. Then he released
her again, knowing she was angry.
"We need to talk about this," he stated, his words coming quickly,
tumbling over each other. "I didn't mean to...well..." He pushed a
hand through his hair and looked around. There were a few people out
and some were looking there way.
"Let's go somewhere a bit more private and talk about this Pierka,
okay?" He said quietly, hoping she would agree.
She looked at him through fogged up eyes for a long moment. "Fine,"
she said. "Where?"
He thought for a moment and then replied, "I know the perfect place.
Follow me."
